Germans Laughed at This “Legless Pilot” — Until He Destroyed 21 of Their Fighters
At 0745 on the morning of June 1st, 1940, Squadron Leader Douglas Bader pushed his Hawker Hurricane to 3,000 ft above the French coast near Dunkirk when a Messerschmitt Bf 109 appeared directly ahead, flying the same direction at nearly identical speed.
