You are getting worried unnecessarily, Brahmadev. Our gods have immense powers of nature. We will free Mahadev from this pain right now. Your power will not end Mahadev’s pain. All of you quickly find and bring the Belpatra. He alone can calm the intense heat of Mahadev. Imagine a tree that neither grows in any heaven nor is protected by the gods of heaven, which neither appeared from the churning of the ocean like the Kalpavriksha nor was so rare like the Parijat that Lord Shri Krishna himself had to go to Indraloka for it. This tree is easily found on the earth, in forests, on mountains and in the courtyards of ordinary people. But the surprising thing is that if there is anything that Mahadev, the lord of gods, loves more than the rarest flowers of heaven, it is a small green leaf of this tree. Bel Patra. After all, what secret is hidden in this ordinary tree? Why do crores of Shiva devotees, as soon as the month of Sawan arrives, first set out in search of this tree? Is it just a plant? And why is it said that a Bel leaf offered with devotion is more dear to Lord Shiva than mountains of gold and silver. So hold your breath, because today we are about to delve into the mystery of the unimaginable union of Shiva and Shakti that throbs within this one simple leaf. We will learn how from a drop of sweat arose the most sacred tree in the universe. And how that devastating poison of churning of the ocean created such an unbreakable relationship between Sawan and Belpatra which continues till today. To reach the roots of this mystery, we must come out of the mentality of the heavenly world where God is measured only by gold ornaments and fifty-six offerings. Lord Vishnu loves yellow clothes. Lotus to Goddess Lakshmi and gold to Kubera. But when it comes to Mahadev, the lord of Kailash, all the rules are broken. Shiva is the ultimate ascetic. There is cremation ashes on his body and a poisonous snake around his neck. What can a person offer to someone who considers even the treasure of Lord Kubera as worthless? The answer to this question is written on a very mysterious page of our Shiva Purana and Skanda Purana. The story is set during the period when Goddess Parvati was performing severe penance to attain Lord Shiva completely and conquer his ascetic mind. This penance of Mother Parvati was not an ordinary penance. It is said that Goddess Parvati performed severe penance for 84,000 years to get Lord Shiva as her husband. This was no ordinary penance. Over time he gave up food. Then she gave up water and ultimately continued doing penance by being absorbed only in the meditation of Lord Shiva. His amazing penance started being discussed in all the three worlds. Even the gods, sages and Siddhas were surprised to see his unwavering resolve. One day Saptdarshi came to Mother Parvati to test her. He saw that the mother was sitting at the same place with her eyes closed for years. Remembering only Lord Shiva with complete concentration. The Saptashis humbly asked O Goddess, you have worshipped Lord Shiva for who knows how many thousands of years. You have given up every happiness of your life. Do you have full faith that Lord Shiva will definitely be attained by you? Mother Parvati slowly opened her eyes. There was a wonderful peace and unwavering faith reflected on his face. She smiled and replied, O Maharishis, even if I have to perform penance for eternity to attain Lord Shiva, I will do so without any hesitation. The only goal of my life is Lord Shiva. He is my life. He is my idol and he is the purpose of my existence. My penance will not end until I attain them. Hearing these words of Mother Parvati the Saptarishis became overwhelmed with emotion. He understood that this was not just penance but the highest example of unwavering love, complete surrender and exclusive devotion towards Shiva. He bowed to the Mother and accepted in his mind that no power in the world can now stop this divine union of Shiva and Shakti. One day Mother Parvati was doing severe penance in the solitude and peaceful valleys of Mount Mandrachal. In the divine breeze of the mountain, when Mother Parvati was completely absorbed in the meditation of Shiva, then due to the energy of her rigorous penance and the heat of her body, a few drops of sweat appeared on her forehead. Those drops of sweat were not ordinary water. Those drops contained the fire of the greatest penance of the universe. Hidden in those drops was the boundless love to attain Shiva and the full power of the Adi Shakti. As soon as that one divine drop of sweat trickled from the forehead of Mother Parvati and fell on the hard ground of Mount Mandara. An unimaginable miracle happened there. The earth’s chest suddenly. A divine light emerged which illuminated the entire Mount Mandarachal and from that very light a tiny green plant sprouted from that drop of sweat. In no time that tiny plant turned into a huge, lush, divine tree. This tree was the vine tree. The gods were watching this amazing scene from the sky. When Mother Parvati saw that tree, a supernatural smile appeared on her face. Mother Parvati, O divine tree, you were born from a part of my body and the white of my penance. From today you will not be called just a plant. My soul, my power will reside within you. Whoever offers your leaves to my lord Mahadev will receive my darshan and the immense blessings of Mahadev simultaneously. Because this tree was born from the body of Mother Parvati herself. So this whole tree became a manifestation of the power of music. In Shiv Purana, Maharishi Ved Vyas Ji has clearly stated that different divine and fierce forms of Mother Parvati reside in every hair of this Bael tree. Just listen carefully and realize what you are actually seeing when you see a willow tree. At the root of this tree resides Mother Church, daughter of the mountains, who holds this tree firmly to the earth. In its trunk resides Mother Maheshwari who bears the weight of the entire universe. Mother Dakshinayani Sati resides in its branches. Whose love is spread in every direction and is waiting for Shiva. And in its leaves resides Mother Parvati herself who is the most tender part of Shiva. Now think about it, when you pluck a Bael leaf and offer it to the Shivalinga with full devotion, you are not offering just a leaf. You yourself are handing over the complete form of Adi Shakti Mata Parvati into the lap of Lord Shiva. And wherever there is Parvati, Shiva will have to come there. There is no other easier way in the entire universe to unite Shiva and Shakti. But that’s not all. If you look carefully at the Belpatra, you will find that its leaves are always joined in groups of three. One stalk and three leaves in it. Never four or two. After all, why only these three leaves? These three leaves are the very symbol of the greatest threads of the universe. It symbolizes the Trinetra three eyes of Lord Shiva. In Shiva’s right eye resides the Sun which gives life. The moon resides in the left eye which gives coolness. And the third eye on his forehead houses the destructive fire. Which destroys. These leaves symbolize the Trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. It symbolizes the three times, past, present, and future. And it also symbolizes the three qualities of Sat, Raja and Tama. When you place a Bel leaf on your palm and offer it to Mahadev, you are actually saying to him, O Mahadev, the sins of my three births, my three virtues, my past, present future, I surrender everything to you today. Take me within you. Now this question might be arising in your mind that, right, Bel Patra is very dear to Lord Shiva. But what happens in the month of Sawan that crores of Shiva devotees go crazy and run towards Shiva temples with water and Bel leaves. Why did the month of Sawan become the month of Shiva? The answer to this question and the secret of the coolness of Bel Patra are connected. From the churning of the ocean that took place after the war between gods and demons. When the gods and demons were churning the Ksheer Sagar together, then before the nectar came out, a terrible poison came out from the unfathomable depths of that ocean which choked the breath of the entire universe. It was Halahal poison. Halahal was not an ordinary poison, it was the essence of all the negativity and destructive energy of the universe. As soon as that poison came out, the temperature of the entire universe started increasing and due to its gas, both the gods and demons started fainting. The winds started burning. The sea water started to break and the sky turned black. The gods panic and cry out, Trahimam Mahadev, Trahimam! This Halahal will turn the entire universe into ashes. Lord, protect us and stop this. Lord Shiva came forward to save the universe from this great destruction. He took that boiling Halla Halvish in his palms and drank it in one gulp to save the universe. But Mother Parvati pressed Shiva’s throat with her hands so that the poison could not enter his stomach. The poison got stuck in Shiva’s throat and his throat turned blue. From then on he was called Neelkanth. But this is where the real story of Sawan and Bel Patra begins. The time when Mahadev had done this ritual was none other than the month of Sawan. The heat of that poison was so intense that Lord Shiva’s entire body started burning. A terrible flame started rising from his throat and the heat of his head increased so much that even the ice of Kailash started melting. Lord Shiva started to suffer from that unimaginable burning sensation. All the gods were terrified. To reduce Shiva’s heat, he showered cold Ganga water on him from a pot full of water. Indra prayed for rain. The moon poured all its coolness on Shiva’s head. But the terrible heat of the Halahal tree did not subside. Then the gods remembered the vine tree. Because the effect of Bel Patra is extremely cooling and as we have known earlier, Goddess Parvati herself resides within it. Who was born to calm the flames of Shiva. The gods immediately plucked three-leafed leaves from the Bel tree and began placing them on Shiva’s blazing head, and then something happened that even the Ganga water could not do. As soon as the form of Mother Parvati, i.e. those cool Bael leaves, touched the third eye and forehead of Shiva, the terrible heat and burning sensation of Halahal poison started to subside. That gentle touch of Shakti took away all the heat from Shiva’s body. Lord Shiva took a deep and calming breath. Lord Shiva being extremely pleased, O gods, from today this Bel leaf will be the most dear to me in this universe. Any devotee who offers me a pot of water and this three-leafed Belpatra in this holy month of Savan, I will take away all the sorrows and poison from his life. That is why the month of Sawan is most dear to Mahadev. In the month of Sawan, the request for rain falling from the sky, a pot of water offered on Shivling and those cool Bel leaves, all these even today soothe the burning sensation of that Halahal poison of Mahadev. When you offer Belpatra in Sawan, you are healing Mahadev for the pain he endured to save our universe. If the Bel Patra offered by the Gods in the month of Sawan is so miraculous then does Mahadev accept the worship of an ordinary human being? We get proof of this from the story of a hunter named Gurudroh. Once upon a time. A hunter named Gurudroh went hunting in a dense and dangerous forest. But the path was lost. The night had become very deep and dark. From all sides came the terrifying roars of wild animals. The hunters were afraid to themselves, tonight is very scary. If I stay on the ground, these ferocious animals will not leave me alive. I will have to spend the night on a tall tree and stay awake. To save his life, the hunter groped in the dark and climbed a big tree and sat there. He did not know which tree it was. It was a huge vine tree. And the biggest thing is that right below that tree there was a very old and proven Shivalinga installed amidst the soil and leaves. Which the hunter did not see because of the darkness. The hunter sat on the branches of the tree all night, trembling with fear of wild animals. To keep himself awake, he unconsciously kept plucking the leaves from the tree and throwing them down. That night was not an ordinary night. That was the Maharatri of Shivratri. The hunter was hungry and thirsty, due to which he unknowingly started fasting. And the Belpatra that he was breaking and throwing down, were falling directly on that old Shivalinga. It’s been a whole night. With the first rays of dawn there was a blinding light. Lord Shiva himself appeared before that hunter with his trident. Lord Shiva smilingly said, O hunter, I am very pleased with this worship done by you unknowingly. You have offered me my most beloved Belpatra. You may not have knowledge in your heart but you have brought the most beloved part of Shiva to Shiva. From today all your sins of all your past lives have been destroyed. Just think friends the Mahadev to whom the Bel Patra offered unknowingly without any mantra and without any knowledge can be so dear that he can grant salvation to a sinful hunter. So when you offer those Bel leaves to him in the holy month of Sawan, chanting Namah Shivay with full devotion, love and tears in your eyes. How happy they would have been then. Mahadev neither wants a golden crown nor fifty-six offerings. He is a resident of the crematorium and a great ascetic. All they need is the true feelings of your heart, a pot of pure water and a three-leafed bel leaf. Friends, these things written in our Puranas are not just rituals or superstitions. It teaches us a very deep philosophy. This tells us that to attain God, there is no need for any great pomp, show or wealth. If your mind is pure, your feelings are true, then even a simple Sahara leaf plucked from the forest can make the greatest God in the universe your companion.
