Laci Peterson’s mom responds to new Scott Peterson evidence: ‘I’m tired’

Laci Peterson’s mother, Sharon Rocha, says she’s tired of hearing new evidence could clear her former son-in-law, Scott Peterson, in the murder of her daughter and unborn grandson in 2002.

“It is never ending, and it’s like ripping the scab off a wound every time,” she told People Magazine. “All they’re looking for right now is to throw everything against the wall and hope that something sticks. Bottom line: He is guilty, and that’s it. Maybe I shouldn’t sound so harsh, but I’m tired. I’m very, very, very tired.”

Angeles Innocence Project, which features interviews with witnesses and experts and pursues tips that defense attorney Chris Pixley claims police and prosecutors ignored when they convicted Peterson.

The organization’s petition to overturn Peterson’s conviction was denied in April.

What happened to Laci Peterson?

Laci Peterson, who was eight months pregnant, disappeared from her Modesto, California, home on Christmas Eve 2002. Her husband, Scott Peterson, told police he had gone fishing alone that day in the San Francisco Bay area.

The bodies of Laci and her unborn son, Conner, washed ashore near the bay months later.

Scott Peterson was convicted of first-degree murder in Laci’s death and second-degree murder in Conner’s death.

In 2004, he was sentenced to death, but the California Supreme Court later reversed his death sentence.

What new evidence does new Laci Peterson documentary claim to show?

Geragos told NewsNation the new documentary centers on a burned-out van recovered near the airport district days after Laci disappeared, evidence he said investigators withheld from the defense.

“Law enforcement decided they weren’t going to turn that over. They were going to basically deep-six that evidence,” Geragos said.

He said the case resurfaced after a state Department of Justice analyst came forward. “It was only because somebody, after they retired, had a pang of guilt, triggered all of this litigation now that finally is pointing toward his innocence,” Geragos said.

The new documentary also features hydrodynamic analysis suggesting Laci’s body was placed in the bay miles from where Scott said he was fishing. Geragos also called the tidal search efforts at the time exhaustive.

Peterson’s former defense attorney, Mark Geragos, says the new documentary contains evidence that proves his client’s innocence. Peterson is serving life in prison without parole.
