The two-part follow-up to “Passion of the Christ” premieres in 2027 and 2028.

Mel Gibson gave screenwriter Randall Wallace a stark warning before working on the Passion of the Christ follow-up.

Wallace, who is reuniting with Gibson to work on the two-part movie The Resurrection of the Christ, started talking about the project of biblical proportions when they were promoting the 2016 movie Hacksaw Ridge together.

Now, he can’t stop thinking about the Oscar winner’s haunting comment a decade later.

“The story that you really need to tell is the Resurrection,” he recalled telling Gibson 10 years ago during the July 15 episode of Raymond Arroyo’s podcast Arroyo Grande. Gibson paused, considering Wallace’s proposal, before responding with “something profoundly beautiful.”

“He said, ‘If we do this, it can’t be for the money, and it can’t be to get back at people that have hated us or wronged us or been unhappy with us.’ And I said, ‘Amen to that,’” Wallace continued, before recalling the eyebrow-raising warning Gibson gave him.

“You know, Satan’s going to come after you,” Gibson said, per Wallace.

The screenwriter tried to brush off the shocking comment: “I said, ‘Well, you know, Satan doesn’t really care about Baptists. It’s really good when Satan can get a Catholic. We’re a dime a dozen.’”

Wallace admitted that he was being sarcastic, but couldn’t help but wonder if there was some truth to Gibson’s comment.

Gibson gave a first look at the movies in May, saying in a statement that it “represents a major part of my life’s work.”

“It has demanded everything of me as a filmmaker and as an artist,” Gibson wrote. “This is far more than a film to me. It’s a mission I’ve carried for over twenty years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history.”

“Reuniting with many of my original collaborators from The Passion of the Christ — true masters of their craft — allowed us to bring this story to the screen exactly as I envisioned it.”

At the time, Gibson also revealed that filming had completed after months abroad in Rome, Bari, Ginosa, Craco, Brindisi, and Matera. Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen is stepping in as Jesus, who was portrayed by Jim Caviezel in the 2004 movie. Mariela Garriga will appear as Mary Magdalene, a role originally performed by Monica Bellucci.

The Resurrection of the Christ part 1 is slated to premiere May 6, 2027, with part 2 coming the following year on May 25, 2028.
