More than 100 years later, scientists would finally decipher, through examinations, to whom the skeleton belonged in life, and the answer has been hidden all along within your own DNA. This is the autopsy of Akhenaten. It is great that we are together to investigate this mystery, and I hope everything is alright with you. For more than a century, Egyptologists have debated, argued, and published conflicting theories about a single skeleton found at the bottom of the Valley of the Kings, but in 2010, modern genetics entered the scene and turned this debate upside down. Today I am going to show you exactly what scientists have discovered and why this discovery is both fascinating and deeply disturbing.
Around 1353 BC, a young man named Amenophis IV ascended the throne of Egypt. Up to that point, nothing unusual; he was just another heir to one of the most powerful dynasties in ancient history, the 18th dynasty, responsible for leading Egypt to the height of its wealth and military power. But just a few years after ascending the throne, this king did something that no other pharaoh had ever dared to do. He decided to abolish the worship of dozens of Egyptian deities—Amun, Osiris, Isis, the entire traditional pantheon—and impose the worship of a single god, Aten, the solar disk. He even changed his own name from Amenophis to Akhenaten, which means something like “he who is useful to Aten” or “the living spirit of Aten.” To give you an idea of the magnitude of this disruption, we are talking about a civilization that had worshipped its gods for over 1000 years, with gigantic temples, powerful priesthoods, and an entire social structure built around polytheistic religion. Out of nowhere, one man decided that there is only one God and that he, the pharaoh, is the only human being capable of communicating directly with this deity.
This was not just a spiritual shift; it was a calculated political coup. By weakening the clergy of Amun, who had amassed wealth and influence almost equivalent to that of the pharaoh himself, Akhenaten concentrated religious and political power in his own hands. He went further, abandoning Thebes, the traditional capital, and building a completely new city from scratch in the middle of the desert, more than 300 kilometers away, named Akhetaten, now known as Amarna. In just a few years, this city sprang up out of nowhere, featuring palaces and temples open to the sky since Aten, the sun, could not be worshipped within enclosed spaces, along with a new administrative elite loyal only to him. Art also changed drastically during this period. Statues and reliefs began to depict the pharaoh in a way never seen before: a long body, wide hips, protruding belly, slightly developed breasts, and a thin, long face—a style so radically different from anything that came before that for decades historians were not even sure what to make of those images. It was precisely this controversial figure, this so-called heretic pharaoh, who almost completely disappeared from official records after his death around 1336 BC. His name was crossed out of subsequent royal lists, his temples were dismantled stone by stone and reused in other constructions, Amarna was abandoned, and over time the desert swallowed everything. It was as if Egypt wanted to erase every trace that this man had ever existed. But he did exist, and his body, or at least what scientists today believe to be his body, spent more than 3,000 years hidden beneath the sand, waiting to be found.
The discovery of tomb KV55 in the summer of 1907 deep in the Valley of the Kings, led by a team of archaeologists headed by Englishman Edward Ayrton and funded by American magnate Theodore Davis, uncovered a small burial chamber that would become known by the code KV55. What they found inside was strange to say the least: a magnificent anthropoid golden coffin, but with the face and funerary mask deliberately removed; canopic jars used to hold the internal organs of the deceased, with the identifying inscriptions carefully erased; and bricks or magical foundation stones with the name of Akhenaten engraved on them. At the center of it all lay a skeleton practically disintegrated by the moisture that had seeped into the chamber over the centuries. However, there was a huge problem, as no one could say for sure whose body it was.
Early analyses conducted in the early 20th century suggested that it was a woman, perhaps Queen Tiye, the mother of Akhenaten, or even one of his secondary wives. The hypothesis made sense at first glance because the hip bones of the skeleton appeared feminine to the anatomists of the time. Years later, new and more detailed bone scans completely changed the hypothesis, revealing that the skeleton was, in fact, that of a young man, probably between 20 and 25 years old at the time of death. This created a very serious problem because it did not match the age Akhenaten should have been; according to historical records, he reigned for at least 17 years, which would have made him a much older man when he died.
This led to the most intriguing question: if it was not Akhenaten, who could it be? Some Egyptologists pointed to Smenkhkare, a mysterious pharaoh who is believed to have reigned for a very short time between Akhenaten and Tutankhamun—a figure so poorly documented that many historians are not even entirely sure if he existed as a separate person, or if he was merely another name used by Akhenaten himself, or a co-regent of very short duration. For almost 100 years, this body remained cataloged in Egyptian museums as an unsolved puzzle, studied and re-examined by generation after generation of archaeologists.
While archaeologists debated the exact identity of the KV55 skeleton, another parallel mystery had surrounded this pharaoh for decades regarding his artistic representations, which seemed physically impossible. In the statues and reliefs found in Amarna, Akhenaten appeared with wide hips like those of a pregnant woman, slightly developed breasts, thick thighs, an elongated face, a thin and long neck, and a protruding, sagging belly. No other Egyptian pharaoh in 3,000 years of royal art had ever been portrayed like this, giving rise to increasingly daring medical theories throughout the 20th century. Some researchers suggested that Akhenaten may have suffered from Marfan syndrome, a genetic condition that causes elongated limbs and fingers, serious heart problems, and characteristic changes in facial and body shape. Others suggested Klinefelter syndrome, a chromosomal condition in men that can cause more androgenous physical characteristics, including breast development and wider hips. Some even defended hypotheses involving hormonal tumors in the pituitary gland capable of drastically altering the distribution of body fat.
Yet, the central problem with these theories was that they were constructed almost entirely on the interpretation of art and not on direct physical evidence from the body itself. Art does not always portray reality with photographic fidelity, much less ancient Egyptian art, which is always laden with religious and political symbolism. Decades later, when high-resolution computed tomography scans were finally performed on mummies from the royal family of the Amarna period, many of these medical hypotheses began to crumble. Analyses found no conclusive bone evidence of Marfan syndrome in any of the mummies examined from this lineage, as the long bones did not exhibit the expected characteristic elongation and there were no signs of cardiovascular deformities. The explanation most widely accepted by Egyptology today is quite different, involving a deeper understanding of Aten’s religion and the family’s DNA.
Turning to Tutankhamun, the sick son discovered almost intact in November 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter after years of searching funded by Lord Carnarvon, his tomb became one of the greatest archaeological sensations of all time, filled with solid gold masks, thrones encrusted with precious stones, and gilded war chariots. But behind all that splendor hid a young king who was extremely ill and physically frail. Tutankhamun ascended the throne at the age of 9 and died at 19 under circumstances that continue to intrigue researchers. Imaging tests performed decades after his discovery revealed that his body had congenital clubfoot on one side, a deformity that likely forced him to walk with difficulty and use support, which explains why more than 100 canes and walking sticks were found inside his tomb, many showing clear signs of actual use with wear on the tips. He also presented with a cleft palate, visibly crooked and overlapping teeth, and evidence of mild scoliosis. He was a young man who, despite being treated like a living god by his people, lived daily with significant pain and physical limitations.
DNA tests conducted in 2010 found something even more worrying: genetic material from multiple strains of the malaria-causing parasite was detected in Tutankhamun’s body tissues, combined with avascular bone necrosis identified in one of the bones of the foot, a condition in which bone tissue dies due to a lack of adequate blood supply. This serious infection may very well have been the final blow that killed him so young in an already weakened body. The persistent question remained: how could a pharaoh raised from birth with the best that ancient Egypt had to offer present so many simultaneous and serious health problems at such a young age?
Before modern genetics revolutionized this investigation, theories about Akhenaten’s family often bordered on absurdity. Some claimed that the pharaoh was actually an extraterrestrial being disguised as a human, and that his elongated and unusual body depicted in Amarna art was visual proof of alien origin—a theory that still circulates strongly in conspiracy channels today. Others believed in ancient family curses or divine punishments imposed by gods angered by Akhenaten’s audacity. I know it sounds crazy, but when you lack concrete scientific evidence, practically any theory ends up becoming plausible to the public. Other cautious scholars preferred down-to-earth explanations, suggesting it was merely an exaggerated and symbolic artistic style with no real biological significance behind it. However, this alone was not enough to resolve Tutankhamun’s documented health problems or to definitively identify the body found in KV55.
It was only when modern genetics entered the field in the early 2010s that these competing theories began to crumble. In February 2010, an Egyptian team led by the then Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Zahi Hawass, in partnership with German geneticists and radiologists from the universities of Tübingen and Bonn, published a groundbreaking study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The project’s goal was ambitious: to extract and compare the genetic material of 11 royal mummies from the 18th Egyptian dynasty, including the mysterious body of KV55 and the mummy of Tutankhamun. Extracting DNA from a mummy over 3,000 years old is no simple task due to the extreme heat of the Egyptian climate, the chemical process of embalming involving resins, salts, and oils capable of degrading genetic material, and millennia of exposure to variations in temperature and humidity. Nevertheless, using tiny samples carefully taken from the interior of long bones and tooth roots, scientists were able to sequence enough genetic markers to perform reliable family comparisons using techniques similar to modern paternity tests.
The result surprised even the researchers: the man buried in chamber KV55 was, with a very high statistical probability, the direct biological father of Tutankhamun. Considering the complete archaeological context of the tomb, the funerary objects found with inscriptions referring to Akhenaten, the fully compatible historical period, and the absence of any other plausible candidate in the direct lineage, the majority conclusion of the scientific team was that the body of KV55 belonged to Akhenaten himself. The alternative hypothesis, still defended by a minority of Egyptologists, remains that it could have been Smenkhkare, his possible older brother or a son who reigned briefly before Tutankhamun.
Furthermore, genetics revealed something even more disturbing about the inner workings of this royal family. Genetic tests conducted by Hawass’s team showed that Tutankhamun’s biological mother was actually the blood sister of his own father, Akhenaten. An unidentified mummy cataloged as “The Younger Lady,” found in another chamber in the Valley of the Kings, was genetically identified as this sister and the mother of the young pharaoh. While this seems shocking by today’s ethical standards, marriages between siblings and even between father and daughter were relatively common practices across several generations of Egyptian royalty, driven by the religious logic of preserving the divine purity of royal blood since pharaohs were considered direct descendants of the gods on earth.
However, relentless genetics exacts a very high biological price for these cultural choices. Repeated unions between first-degree relatives generation after generation dramatically increase the statistical chances of recessive hereditary diseases manifesting in offspring—conditions that would otherwise remain silent in populations with greater genetic diversity. This is precisely the pattern scientists found in Tutankhamun’s body: congenital clubfoot, cleft palate, generalized bone fragility, and increased susceptibility to serious infections like malaria. All of this had direct roots in the extreme and prolonged inbreeding within the Amarna royal family, making Tutankhamun biologically doomed even before birth.
This discovery also sheds entirely new light on the unusual appearance of Akhenaten in Amarna art. The hypothesis most widely accepted by the academic community today is no longer about a rare genetic syndrome, but rather about a realistic documentary depiction by artists of the time. That androgynous artistic style was, to a large extent, ideological and deliberate. Akhenaten made a point of representing himself by combining typically masculine and feminine characteristics at the same time as a symbolic way of presenting himself to his people as a complete and self-sufficient divine figure capable of generating and nurturing life, just as Aten generated light and heat without needing any complementary deity.
Even with all these genetic discoveries, the case is far from completely closed. The estimated age of the KV55 skeleton, placed between 35 and 45 years at the time of death according to various bone analyses, still generates academic debate because historical records suggest Akhenaten reigned for at least 17 full years, making him an older man than the age range estimated by recent bone scans. Because of this chronological inconsistency, a significant group of Egyptologists continues to defend the idea that the body actually belongs to Smenkhkare. Yet, most researchers accept the body as belonging to Akhenaten, considering that the complete body of available genetic, archaeological, and contextual evidence is significantly stronger than any alternative hypothesis.
In your opinion, did this 2010 genetic discovery finally solve the mystery surrounding the most controversial body in the Valley of the Kings? Perhaps we will never be 100 percent certain about some specific details, such as the exact age at the time of death or the definitive name etched in history books. But one thing the DNA made clear without a shadow of a doubt is that the same obsessive pursuit of divine purity that led Akhenaten to break with over 1,000 years of Egyptian religious tradition was also the main reason for genetically corroding his own family lineage generation after generation. The revolution of a single god ultimately ended, silently consumed by the very genes of the family that created it, proving that even the most powerful rulers of antiquity could not escape the biological consequences of their own choices.
