Long ago, the Kathmandu Valley was filled with forests, hills, and the clear Bagmati River. There was a beautiful kingdom in this valley. The king of this place was Pashupreksh who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. He used to worship Lord Shiva every day. Once Lord Shiva came to earth and after seeing the beauty of Kathmandu, he decided to spend some time there. Lord Shiva took the form of a deer which was so beautiful and majestic that the entire forest blossomed upon seeing him. One day King Pashupreksh went out hunting on his chariot. They were going towards the forest. Then they saw a shining deer whose body was shining. Seeing this he experienced a divine power. As if a god was in front of them. The king laid down his bow and sank to his knees. They knew that this divine form belonged to Lord Shiva. Seeing the king’s devotion, Lord Shiva showed him his true form. Seeing this, tears came to the king’s eyes. The king bowed to Lord Shiva and pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva asked him to express a wish. The king said, O Mahadev, please sit on this holy land. With your blessings this land will become heaven and the people here will also receive your blessings. Shiva agreed to the king’s request and told him that there would always be a symbol of mine at this place which would protect it. Saying this, Lord Shiva again took the form of a deer and went towards the forest. Lord Shiva was spending a lot of his time on earth due to which the balance of the universe was getting disturbed. All the gods started worrying as to why Lord Shiva had not returned to his place.

Lord Vishnu started searching for Lord Shiva on earth and as soon as he saw Lord Shiva in the form of a deer, Lord Shiva started running away from there. Vishnu was trying to catch him and his hand touched the deer’s horn, which broke and fell to the ground. It is said that at the place where this horn fell, a grand Shivalinga of Lord Shiva appeared which had four faces. These four faces were in different directions. This Shivalinga was called Mukhalinga. This Mukha Linga is Swayambhu, that is, it appears on its own and with this the leela of Lord Shiva ended and he returned to his place. But the king built a grand palace of Lord Shiva in Kathmandu and installed that sacred Mukha Linga and from here the Pashupatinath temple of Lord Shiva was established, that is, the abode of all living beings, the temple of the lord of all living beings. The king then chose a little girl who was taken away from her parents and taken to a locked room. That girl was crying and was scared. The statue of Nandi is also a mystery in itself. It is said that if a devotee looks into Nandi’s eyes, he can get a glimpse of the true form of Shiva within. Many sages have claimed that during meditation here they saw the Pashupati form of Shiva. There’s another secret tradition associated with this. The eternal flame burning in the temple. It is believed that this flame never goes off and has been burning for years. This mystery is no less than a puzzle for scientists even today. Time passed and the legend about this place spread far and wide. But when people came to see it, they found that this Shivalinga was not like any other normal Shivalinga. This Shivalinga had four faces in all four directions. Some scholars believe that these four faces symbolize the four ages. East direction, Satyayuga, South, Tretayuga, West, Dwaparyuga, North, Kaliyuga. People say that the shape of the Shivalinga changes with time and when Kaliyuga reaches its peak, the north-facing face of this Shivalinga will be most affected. Some people consider it to be a five-faced Shivalinga, not a four-faced one. Ishan Mukha because the fifth face is upward which cannot be seen, can only be felt. Tantric knowledge says that the Ishan Mukha is a door of operation. From where Lord Shiva governs all the worlds. But here death is not feared but is considered the door to liberation. It is believed that if the last rites of a soul are performed here then the cycle of birth and death is broken. That is why many families bring the dead bodies of their loved ones here even from far away countries. Since we are talking about Tantra, it is important to understand that Pashupatinath is not only a Vedic temple, it is also considered a centre of Shaiva Tantric practice. Many Tantric sects of Nepal believe that the original seed of Tantra is preserved in the womb of Shivalinga. Many esoteric practitioners who practice here claim that special energy lines, energy pathways, pass beneath this land, which extend to the yoga centers of the Himalayas. Some Tantric texts also mention that before entering the sanctum sanctorum, the priests control their nervous system with special breathing techniques. They take their consciousness into deep peace so that their mind remains pure and stable near Shiva. A tradition is still alive in Kathmandu which is not seen anywhere else. This tradition is Kumari i.e. Living Goddess. It is not as simple as it looks. Kumari is not an ordinary girl. She is considered to be a girl in whom Goddess Taleju i.e. Mother Durga resides. Just as a temple is considered incomplete without the idol of a goddess, similarly the spiritual power of Kathmandu is considered incomplete without Kumari. This tradition started from very ancient times. The Goddess appeared in a dream to King Jayaprakash Mal of Kathmandu and said that in the future she would reside in his living body and not in the form of an idol. Inside a girl. From that night onwards this divine tradition started in Kathmandu. Even today every Kumari is a part of this tradition. Even if the century changes. But the power and respect of the Kumari never diminishes. The ritual of choosing a Kumari is very complex. It takes months. First of all, it is taken care that the girl belongs to the Shakya community.

Which is considered to be a group of ancient Buddhist families. The reason behind this is that both Hindu and Buddhist traditions are mixed in Shakti worship in Kathmandu. The power of the goddess is considered equal in both religions. Now the girl is tested because it is believed that the Goddess comes in the body which has sharp eyes, softness like lotus in the feet, calm resonance in the voice and extraordinary stability in the mind. The most important test is the fear test. This is a very ancient ritual. In a large chamber, the goddess’s protectors, the Tantrikas, perform rituals with various masks and Bhairava forms. The girl is seated amidst drums, trumpets, chants, fire and frightening symbols. If she cries, panics, or shows fear, the selection stops. Because it is believed that the goddess does not live in fear. Only the girl whom fear cannot touch can become a living goddess. When the girl passes all these tests, she is selected as Kumari. At that very moment his life changes. Everything from daily routine to home. The Kumari lives in a special building called Kumari Bhawan. Kumari does not live with her parents. His family is nearby. But she cannot live a normal life with them. Her entire attention, her entire existence is molded into the form of the Goddess. It is forbidden to even place her feet on the ground because it is believed that wherever her feet fall, that land will acquire the power of the goddess and ordinary humans will not be able to handle it. So she is either carried in the parting of her hair or a sacred sheet of red cloth is spread and she is made to step on it. The most amazing thing is that the Kumari should not suffer any kind of wound or injury. If she is ever injured or bleeds, it is believed that the goddess has left that body and it is necessary to select a new Kumari. The life of a Kumari is as divine as it is full of sacrifice. Now the Kumari is kept in Kumari Bhawan only till adolescence. Once the girl reaches adolescence, another Kumari is chosen. This happens because due to the changes taking place in the body during adolescence, the mind does not remain balanced and the Mother Goddess leaves that body. But consciousness is immortal. There is an open crematorium on this land. At a distance of a few steps, an eternal flame burns in the sanctum sanctorum. And this scene makes us understand that existence is not just about the body. Here the ashes of the pyre also give education and so does the water offered on the Shivalinga. This region of Pashupati teaches us that in the race of life we forget many things. But in the end everything calms down and merges into the silence that we call Shiva.
