The Kingdom of Morocco is a beautiful country in North Africa. Moroccan identity and culture is a vibrant mix of Berber, Arab, and European cultures. The King of Morocco is Mohammed VI, who acceded to the throne in 1999. He introduced a number of reforms and changed the family code, which granted women more power. Mohammed could have taken several wives, but he married only once. His first and single wife is Lalla Salma. They got married twenty years ago and now have two children: a son, Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, and a daughter, Princess Lalla Khadijah. The King of Morocco is regarded as the seventh most influential Muslim in the world. In 2022, according to Forbes, he was the richest king in Africa and the fifth wealthiest monarch in the world. His net worth has been estimated at between 2.1 billion dollars and over 8.2 billion dollars.
The king is sometimes criticized for spending money lavishly and living in incredible luxury, but he is sometimes also praised for his liberal reforms and for giving women more rights. Thanks to him, women in Morocco obtained the right to divorce their husbands and to own and inherit property. It is hard to believe that earlier women did not have these rights because Morocco is a conservative country. The king shows his progressive views through the personal example of his family. His wife, Lalla Salma, actively participated in the social life of the country. She is dressed in a European style; she wears trousers and does not wear a hijab, but she has not been seen by media since December 2017. It has been speculated that the couple are divorced. These royals never discussed their personal lives in public. According to rumors, Lalla Salma left the royal palace and now lives in Greece. She continues to see her children often and take them on trips.
Lalla Salma no longer attends public events, but her children have an active social life. Her eldest son, Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, is nineteen years old. He is the future King of Morocco, therefore his father introduces him to all royal affairs since childhood. Lalla Khadijah is only fifteen years old, but she attended royal ceremonies since she was eleven. She has also met world leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron, Spain’s King Felipe VI, and Queen Letizia. The princess was born in 2007 and was welcomed to the world with a twenty-one-gun salute and extravagant presents gifted to all girls born on that same day. Her father pardoned almost 9,000 prisoners upon the announcement of her birth. Now, people in Morocco call her the princess of hearts, as she is one of the most adored royal teens in the world.
The little princess shows grace and elegance beyond her years. Her birthday is celebrated every year throughout the country as a grand event. Like her older brother, the young girl studies at the royal college and can speak multiple languages. She has proven to be a talented student and even performed stage plays in Arabic, French, Spanish, English, Russian, and Chinese for her 2017 graduation ceremony. In 2018, at the age of eleven years old, Princess Lalla Khadijah accompanied her father and brother to her first official ceremony. The program discussed schooling and education reforms in Morocco. Since then, the princess has been present at many other official ceremonies alongside her family. In 2019, she chaired an inauguration ceremony for the vivarium of Rabat’s National Zoological Park.
Lalla Khadijah has met many important world leaders and members of the royalty who have visited her family in Morocco. The young princess also likes to travel with her family around the world. She usually spends her holidays in New York and Paris, but most of all her family likes to visit Greece. Sometimes they even rent a luxury yacht named Serenity, which costs four million dollars per week. On vacation, Lalla Khadijah can dress like a normal teenager in jeans and sneakers, but at formal events she often wears business suits or traditional Moroccan dresses. King Mohammed has progressive views on raising his daughter. He involves her in state affairs and in social life. It is clear that when Lalla grows up, she will not be just a wife and mother; she can take an important public post.
The status of women in Morocco is still difficult. The society is dominated by patriarchal views, but the country is trying to change the situation. The political representation of women in Morocco remains relatively low, but in 2011 the country created a quota system that allocated one-third of the seats in the lower house of parliament to women. Now they have a real political voice in Morocco. Women’s representation in parliament has increased from one percent to seventeen percent during twelve years. It would not be surprising if Princess Lalla Khadija also would take on an important political post in the future when her elder brother becomes king. She can also do social work like her mother.
The princess in her youth understands the importance of state events, but at the same time the princess loves to make music, play the guitar, and perform on stage.
