What Existed Before Creation? The Shiva Purana’s Answer Will Shock You

Introduction to the Absolute and the Birth of Form

What if I told you that before this universe existed, before the stars were born, before time itself took its very first breath, someone was already there. Not a god, not a force, not energy, something so vast, so absolute that even the greatest gods, Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, bowed their heads in complete surrender. This is not mythology. This is not a story. This is the truth that was recorded thousands of years ago in the oldest scripture ever written about the lord of lords, the Shiva Purana. Namaste and welcome to Aastha Aur Itihas. I am so glad you are here today because what you are about to hear will change the way you see existence itself. Close your eyes for just a moment. Imagine no sky, no earth, no stars, no sun, no moon, no sound, no light, no darkness, not even space because space needs somewhere to exist. Nothing. And yet, the Shiva Purana says, in that absolute nothingness, something existed. No shape, no color, no beginning, no end. Beyond thought, beyond description, beyond even the concept of beyond. The great sages, those who had meditated for thousands of years, they gave this truth a name. They called it Nirguna Para Brahma, the supreme reality, with no qualities, with no form. That was Shiva. Not the Shiva with matted hair and a trident. Not the Shiva sitting peacefully on Mount Kailash. This was something infinitely greater. This was Mahakal. The lord who exists beyond time. The consciousness that needs no universe to exist in because the universe exists inside him. Read that again if you need to. The universe is inside Shiva. Not the other way around. And then one second. In that infinite silence something stirred. Not because of any outside force. Not because someone commanded it. Not out of any need or desire. But simply out of divine will. The scriptures call it Iccha Shakti, the power of pure will. Shiva, who had no form, chose to take form. From Mahakal, the formless absolute, he became Maheshwara, the great lord with presence, with personality, with power. And then, in the most magnificent expression, he revealed himself as Sada Shiva, the eternal Shiva. Five faces, 10 arms, radiating light in every direction. This was not birth, my friends. Shiva was never born. This was simply the infinite choosing to let itself be seen. Like a lamp that had always been burning in a locked room, finally opening the door.

The Primordial Union and the Infinite Pillar of Light

Segment three, the first love story of the universe. But Shiva, even in his divine form, was alone. And here, the Shiva Purana reveals something extraordinary. Something that the greatest philosophers have meditated on for centuries. From within Shiva’s own being, from his own love, his own energy, his own nature, a radiant power emerged. She is called Adi Shakti, the primordial power, the first feminine force in all of existence. She was not separate from him. She was not created by him. She was him in a different expression. Think of it this way. Shiva is the sun. Shakti is the sunlight. Can you separate sunlight from the sun? You cannot. And that is the eternal mystery of Shiva and Shakti. Two, and yet one. This sacred union of consciousness and energy, of stillness and movement, is the very heartbeat of this universe. Every star that shines, every river that flows, every child that laughs, every heart that loves, all of it, all of it, is born from this one divine union. Now, creation had begun to unfold. Brahma had come into existence. Vishnu had come into existence. Two magnificent, divine, immensely powerful beings. And then, they had an argument. “I am the greatest,” said Brahma. “I created everything.” “No,” said Vishnu. “I sustain everything. Without me, your creation collapses. I am supreme.” Back and forth, back and forth, neither willing to step down. The universe itself trembled. And then, it happened. From the very fabric of existence, a column of fire erupted. Not fire like a flame, not light like the sun. This was something else entirely. An infinite pillar of blazing light shooting downward into the depths below all worlds, and upward beyond the highest heavens. No beginning, no end. Infinite. Both Brahma and Vishnu stood frozen. They had never seen anything like this. Nobody had ever seen anything like this. Then a voice came from within the light. “Whoever finds the end of this pillar, he is the greatest.” Brahma became a swan and flew upward. For thousands and thousands of years, up and up and up, beyond the stars, beyond the galaxies, he could not find the top. Vishnu became a great boar and dug downward. Through the layers of earth, through the roots of existence. For thousands of years, he could not find the bottom. Both returned, exhausted, humbled, speechless. That pillar of infinite light was Shiva himself. This, my friends, is the Jyotirlinga, the lingam of light. Shiva’s way of saying, “You did not create me. You did not sustain me. I was here before you breathed your first breath, and I will remain long after the last star goes dark.” Brahma and Vishnu bowed completely, totally, in full surrender. And the 12 places on this earth where that divine light is said to still be present, we call them the 12 Jyotirlingas. Somnath, Kashi Vishwanath, Kedarnath, they are not just temples. They are wounds of light in the fabric of this world.

The Deception and the Eternal Curse of the Creator

But the story does not end there, because Brahma, even after this humbling moment, made a choice that would cost him everything. On his way back down, Brahma came across a Ketaki flower floating gently through the void. He stopped the flower and asked, “Where did you come from?” The flower said, “I fell from the very top of the pillar of light.” And Brahma, the great creator, the lord of all knowledge, chose to lie. He took that flower back. He stood before Vishnu and Shiva, and he said, “I found the top. This flower is my proof.” Vishnu told the truth. He said, “I could not find the bottom.” But Brahma lied. And Shiva, who sees everything, who knows everything, who existed before the concept of secrets was even born, knew. Shiva appeared in his full fierce form, and he looked at Brahma, and he said, “You lied. You let your pride speak. You used an innocent flower to protect your ego. You shall not be worshipped on this earth. No temple shall be built in your name. No ritual shall invoke you the way it invokes the divine.” And that is why, even today, across this entire vast country of India, temples of Brahma are almost nowhere to be found. While Shiva temples number in the hundreds of thousands. And the Ketaki flower, that beautiful fragrant flower, to this day is never offered to Lord Shiva. A punishment written in nature itself, still being carried thousands of years later. Think about that. My dear listeners, what you just heard today is not the beginning of a story. It is the beginning of the story. The only story that has ever truly mattered. The story of where everything came from. Why you exist. Why this world exists. And what force is silently holding all of it together. Even right now. As you listen to these words. You have just walked through the gates of the Shiva Purana. And I want you to know. You are not here by accident. Some force brought you to this video today. Some pull. Some curiosity. Some longing. Trust that. Because what is coming next in Khanda 2. Is a love story so powerful. So painful. So devastating. That it literally broke the universe. A goddess who loved so completely. That she walked into fire. Rather than hear her beloved’s name dishonored. A father whose pride destroyed everything he built. And a god. The greatest god. Who grieved so deeply. That his grief became a dance. A dance that shook the very foundations of creation. The story of Sati. The first wife of Shiva. The goddess who chose death over dishonor. And the rage. The unstoppable universe shaking rage that followed. That story is coming very soon. Only on Astha Aur Itihas. Until then. Keep your faith close. Keep asking questions. And remember. Har Har Mahadev. Om Namah Shivaya.
