When Hanuman Stopped Yamraj ?
When Hanuman Stopped Yamraj ?
Death itself was waiting at the gates of Ayodhya. Yamraj had come with the message of destiny. Yug had taken his last breath. Time had given its verdict. Now Lord Shri Ram had to leave his body. The golden era of Ram Rajya was on the verge of ending. But death could not enter Ayodhya. Yamraj tried to cross the threshold. But he was stopped. There was no army there, no weapons, no mantras. Was standing at the door. Hanuman. We know Hanuman as a devotee. But at that moment he himself had become the invincible power of nature.
He had vowed that no harm would come to his Lord and when death itself becomes a form of harm, then even death has to stop. Even Yamaraj, the god of death himself, stopped for a moment. He knew that if Hanuman wished, he would be pushed beyond the limits of this world. Even time was apprehensive in front of that power and at that very moment the universe stopped. For time to move forward, it was necessary for Lord Shri Ram to give up his body. But Hanuman was not allowing time to move forward. Destiny stood on one side. On the other hand, devotion. Lord
Shri Ram was sitting quietly on his throne. He knew very well what was happening at the door. They knew their biggest protector had now become their biggest obstacle. He could not order Hanuman to admit death. Because Hanuman does not obey orders in love. He could not fight with his own devotee and then Lord Shri Ram decided to create a leela. Lord Shri Ram was talking to Hanuman in the royal court and at that very moment his royal seal slowly slipped from his finger. A sharp sound echoed across the marble floor. The ring
rolled. Reached an invisible crack in the floor. It stopped for a moment and then disappeared into darkness. My ring I want that. Hanuman Hanuman did not delay even for a moment. One word of the Lord was for him the law of the entire universe. He began to narrow his form. In a moment he became smaller than a bee. Hanuman entered that crack. They thought they would just get down to the foundation of the castle. He will find the gold ring that fell in the mud and return in a few moments. But that rift did not end. She continued going down.
Below the foundation of the palace, below the soil of Ayodhya , beyond the rocks, beyond the rocks, beyond the layers of the earth, Hanuman kept falling , kept falling, moments passed or perhaps hours passed and the wind started changing. First it was cool, then it was burning and then it smelled of sulphur and electricity. They were moving away from the human world. Ultimately Hanuman fell on the ground. But this was no ordinary land. This was Nagok. Ancient Kingdom of the Serpents A realm where light does not come from the sun. There was
light spreading there. From the divine aura of gems embedded on the hoods of huge snakes. Blue, green and golden light was dancing on the walls of the caves, piercing the darkness. The atmosphere was stable. It’s as if time itself is breathing slowly here. This place was silent. But that silence held the weight of ages. Hanuman was moving forward in the silent depths of Naglok. Each step pierced the silence of the cave. He had a mace in his hand. The power of devotion and the resolve of religion
And then they saw him, Vasuki, the king of snakes, coiled in the middle of the cave, huge and motionless The gems of his hoods were emitting a dim light. His eyes were like two deep pools of liquid time, pulsing with his breath. Hanuman moved towards him unwaveringly. I am a servant of Lord Shri Ram. His ring had fallen. I have come to pick him up. Vasuki looked at that little monkey. There was neither surprise nor question in his eyes. He did not even ask who is Ram? He simply tilts his huge head towards the center of the cave.
Hanuman looks there. A huge mountain stood in the middle of the cave. Hanuman moves towards him, shimmering with golden glow in the semi-darkness. They thought that the Lord’s ring would be right on top of this pile. They climb that golden slope. But as soon as they get close they stop. This mountain was not made of stones. Not even coins. It was made of rings. Hanuman picks up a ring. They look at him carefully. The royal symbol of Suryavansh was inscribed on it and the name Shri Ram was engraved on the same gold.
In a moment, relief appears on Hanuman’s face. He thought he had found the same ring. But then his eyes fall on another ring lying below. Hanuman picks him up. This ring was also similar to that. Hanuman drops both the rings down. He bends down and puts his hands in the pile. They take out a handful of rings and then they are stunned. Everything was the same. Same royal seal, same gold, same name, Shri Ram. Hanuman stood stunned on the golden slope. His mind, which could cross the ocean, was
unable to solve this mystery and then he turned and moved towards Vasuki. I cannot understand which of these countless postures is that of my Lord? Vasuki looks at Hanuman calmly. There was the weariness of ages in his eyes and the knowledge of eternity as if he had seen time being born and also time ending. All these brave monkeys belong to Lord Shri Ram. This is impossible. Lord Shri Ram had just dropped his ring. Hanuman, who sent you here? Lord Shri Ram himself has sent me here. And when were you sent? Hanuman asked when did you send it? At that very moment when Lord
Shri Ram’s ring fell in this world. And this happens every time. This world is not a straight line. It’s a cycle. Infinite cycle. Hanuman said I am not able to understand anything. This universe is born, lives, perishes and then is born again. And within that vast cycle of time, the story of Ramayana happens again and again. A Ram is born in every era. Live life there. Go to the forest. Let’s fight. He rules over Ayodhya. And when their work is done they have to go. But in every era there is
also a Hanuman who guards the gate who is so immersed in love that he does not want to let them go and so every time Ram drops his ring and every time a Hanuman comes here searching for it. There was complete silence in the cave. Hanuman looks towards that golden mountain. Now they were n’t just looking at rings. They were looking at the history of time. Each ring symbolized a era. A life served, a war fought. A bridge was built and then another Ramayana. Gradually Hanuman started understanding. He thought he was alone.
He felt this moment was unique. Their love, their duty, their separation have happened only once in history. But the truth was something else. They were merely a note in the song that has been sung over and over again since time immemorial. There are as many Ramas born on this mountain as there are coins, and there are as many Hanumans born as there are Ramas. This was the moment Anand Ramayan wanted us to feel. It wasn’t a magic story. This was the feeling of humility. Hanuman stood before the proof of infinity.
Now he understood what he would get even if he picked up any ring and returned. The falling of the ring was no coincidence. This wasn’t even a task. This was a message. Message of Lord Shri Ram. As if they are saying. Hanuman, don’t hold me. Stopping my form is like stopping the flow of a river. The river has to flow and the cycle of time will keep turning. Hanuman understood. Even before him, countless Hanumans must have stood here. With the same broken heart between those rings and in the end
they too must have done what love always does. Hanuman slowly opens his fist. The ring slips from his palm and falls back into the same pile. They no longer try to find their ring among millions of rings that look exactly like it. It did n’t mean anything anymore. Hanuman silently salutes Vasuki. Then they turn their backs on that golden mountain and begin the long climb back down to earth. Hanuman slowly emerges from the crack in the palace floor and returns to his normal size in a moment.
That crack in the floor slowly closes. As if she was never there. Hanuman looks towards the throne. It was empty. Lord Shri Ram entered the stream of Saryu and merged into the infinite ocean. Hanuman neither calls out nor shakes the palace in grief. They just look at that empty throne and in that moment they understand. They were n’t protecting any form. They were protecting a moment, and the nature of moments is that they pass away. That mountain of rings was telling a different story. He
tells us that we are all part of a cycle that is much older and much larger than our egos. The story is repeated. Anand returns. The separation also returns. Hanuman returned from that mountain without the ring. But they were carrying along. An even heavier truth, the knowledge that they are eternal not because they are unique but because they are part of that infinite cycle. The throne is empty but the story is not over. The cycle continues and somewhere in the deep time of the universe a ring is falling again. Om Om
