When Shiva Became Grihapati Avatar
When Shiva Became Grihapati Avatar
Whenever the call of devotees is heard on earth. Whenever there is a need to protect religion and fulfill the wishes of devotees. Then and then, Trilokinath Lord Shiva appears in his various incarnations and does the welfare of his devotees. Today we are going to talk about the Grihapati incarnation of Mahadev. This is the seventh incarnation of Lord Shiva which is described in Shiva Mahapuran. This incarnation is especially important for devotees who wish to have children and follow the Dharma in their family life. Let us know why Lord Shiva took the incarnation of Grihapati. What are the amazing miracles of this incarnation and what lesson do we learn from this story? At the end of Satyayuga, on one hand, while the gods were busy in their respective worlds, on the other hand, humans were forgetting the right path of family life. At that time, family relationships had broken down. There was a lack of religion-based love between husband and wife. The children did not respect their parents. The Guru-disciple tradition had weakened. Moral values were declining in the society. Seeing all this, Mother Earth became extremely worried. She went to Lord Vishnu and said, O Lord, the household religion is declining on earth. Families are breaking up. Relationships are falling apart. If this situation continues like this, the very existence of humanity will be in danger. Lord Vishnu, understanding this serious situation, said, Mother, this problem cannot be solved only by war or power. For this, an example of ideal family life will have to be presented and Mahadev is the most suitable for this. When Lord Vishnu prayed to Mahadev, he said, Mahadev, this time Tandava will not work. This time, religion will have to be protected by establishing the ideals of family life. Mahadev immediately understood the gravity of the situation and said, Lord, I will take the incarnation of Grihapati and show the right path to humanity. I will show how to become an ideal husband, ideal father and ideal householder. There was a beautiful city named Dharmapur on the banks of river Narmada. A great Brahmin sage named Vishwanar lived here. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and was engaged in worshipping Lord Shiva daily. Vishwanar Muni’s wife Suchishmati was an ideal devoted wife. She served her husband and accompanied him in his worship of Lord Shiva. This couple lived their lives according to religion. Vishwar Muni was a deep scholar of the scriptures. He used to perform Agnihotra and Panchayagna daily. He was adept in Shatkarma. The gods served their ancestors and guests. He respected Brahmins. After not having a child for many years, Suchishmati one day said to her husband, O Lord, I have enjoyed all the pleasures due to your blessings. But till now I have not got the happiness of having children. I strongly wish that we have a son like Lord Shiva. Hearing this from Shuchismati, the heart of sage Vishwanar was moved. He knew that his wife’s wish was justified. He decided that he would perform severe penance to Lord Shiva. Vishwanar Muni asked his wife to be patient and immediately left for Kashi. After reaching Kashi, he established a Shivalinga on the banks of Ganga Ji which is called Veereshwar Linga. Pleased with the single-minded devotion of Vishwanar Muni, Lord Shiva appeared before him. One day while meditating, the sage saw a divine child visible in the middle of the Veereshwar Linga. This child was very beautiful. His radiance was like that of the moon. The body was covered with a golden aura. Tripund tilak was visible on the forehead. The eyes were filled with compassion. Lord Shiva in the form of a child said to Vishwanar Muni, O Vishwanar, I am very pleased with your devotion. To fulfill the wish of you and your wife, I myself will take birth in your house as a son. Vishwanar Muni was overjoyed after receiving this boon. He immediately returned to Dharampur and told this good news to his wife. According to the blessing of Lord Shiva, after some time Shuchishmati became pregnant. A divine child was born on the Panchami of Shukla Paksha of Magh month. At the time of birth, shower of flowers by the gods from the sky, sound of divine music, flow of fragrant air, spread of divine light in the house. When the news spread in the three worlds that Lord Shiva himself has taken birth in human form, then Lord Brahma himself came for the naming ceremony. Brahma ji said that this child will be the protector of the household religion and will establish family values, hence his name will be Grihapati. When Grihapati turned 5 years old, the first great ritual of his life was performed. The atmosphere of that day of Yagyopavit Sanskar was amazing. Divine light started emanating from the sacrificial fire. As if the god himself is seated in it. A sweet voice echoed from the sky. It was as if the gods had declared his greatness. All four directions were filled with divine fragrance. Everyone present was amazed that this child was not ordinary but was endowed with supernatural powers. The householder had unique brilliance since childhood. His talent for education was such that in just one year he completed the task which would have taken sages years. He studied all the Vedas. Assimilated the guru knowledge of Upanishads. He became proficient in grammar, prosody and astrology. He gained a deep understanding of the scriptures and also acquired profound knowledge of Yoga and Tantra. His personality was full of divinity. Intelligence and sharpness were innate in him, and he considered serving his parents as his ultimate duty. Following the principles of religion, treating everyone with love and respect and imbibing divine qualities like kindness, forgiveness and truth had become a part of his nature. When he reached youth, the householder took permission from his parents and left for Kashi. He reached the same sacred Veereshwar Linga where his father had once performed long-term penance. Sitting there he started his difficult meditation. His vow was strict celibacy. Worship Shivalinga with devotion every day. Only fruits during the day and Shiva praise during night vigil. Every moment the same mantra kept echoing on his tongue. Shivo aham Shivo aham. The householder was engaged in penance in Kashi. The atmosphere around him was filled with divinity. The aura of his meditation was so intense that the heaven of the gods trembled. Indra’s throne started shaking. Indra, the king of gods, became frightened. If this young man’s penance is successful then my hold on heaven will weaken. I have to stop this right now. Indra resorted to his magic. He sent the nymphs. Apsaras Rambha, Menaka and Urvashi arrived with veena and dance to break the penance of the householder. But the householder remained stable like an immovable mountain. His eyes were closed. Only one sound on the lips, Shivo Aham Shivo Aham, the Apsaras returned defeated. Indra’s anger and fear both increased. Then Indra himself appeared. The sky trembled with his thunderbolt. The clouds started thundering. Indra, O householder, your penance is disturbing the peace of heaven. This power is only for the gods. Give up your penance now, not for humans. Otherwise you will be burnt to ashes by my thunderbolt. The householder opened his eyes. The atmosphere was illuminated by his radiance. Grihapati said in a calm but firm voice that the power gained from Indra’s penance is not for defeating anyone but for protecting the religion. If you are afraid of my penance then it is a proof of your ego and not of my crime. Indra roared, it is my duty to protect religion. You are crossing the limits of power, not of people like you. The householder replied that religion is not a slave to anyone. Indra, when unrighteousness increases, then any seeker, any ascetic can become greater than the gods. If your thunderbolt is for the protection of religion, then my penance is also in the service of religion. Indra picked up the thunderbolt in anger and, tearing the sky, threw it towards Grihapati. But the householder chanted Om Namah Shivay in a steady manner. The divine light generated by his penance took the form of a fire flame. Who stopped the thunderbolt in mid-sky. Indra was astonished. Grihapati said in a serious tone, Indra, this struggle is not about power, but about truth and falsehood. If you stand with Dharma, I am not your enemy. But if, overcome by arrogance, you oppose my penance, then understand that my penance can defeat you too. Silence fell over the sky for a moment. Indra’s anger slowly subsided. He was filled with respect for Grihapati’s brilliance and devotion to Dharma. Indra bowed his head and said, Grihapati, your practice is extraordinary. Your penance will not go in vain. I acknowledge your greatness. Grihapati remained engrossed in penance. His meditation, his resolve, and his faith were so strong that even Mahadev, seated on Kailash, was pleased. Suddenly, one night, when the Ganges flowed slowly and all of Kashi was silent, a divine light descended from the sky. A radiant aura emanated from the Veereshwar Linga, and Mahadev himself appeared. Lord Shiva’s voice echoed. Son, Grihapati, I am deeply pleased with your penance. Your heart is pure, and your resolve is to protect Dharma. Today, I grant you a boon. Ask for whatever you desire. The householder replied humbly, Mahadev, Lord of the Gods, I desire no material comforts or empire. If you are pleased, grant me the strength to always protect dharma. Establish truth and justice. Grant me the light of wisdom that never extinguishes. Shiva smiled. Grihapati, your heart is truly divine. Therefore, I grant you three boons. The boon of unbroken knowledge. May the profound knowledge of the Vedas, Upanishads, and all the scriptures always remain alive within you. The boon of protecting dharma. Wherever unrighteousness rises, your words and asceticism will awaken dharma. The boon of spiritual radiance. The mere sight of you will purify the minds of beings and inspire them to the path of truth. Lord Shiva raised his trident and blessed him, saying, Grihapati, you are no longer just a seeker but a great protector of dharma. Your name will endure for ages. The mere remembrance of you will purify and purify the hearts of men. The householder bowed at Mahadev’s feet. At that moment, a radiant aura emanated from his body. It was as if he had become a part of Shiva’s power itself. The fame of Grihapati’s boons soon spread throughout all directions. As a personification of knowledge, he was considered a walking embodiment of the Vedas. His words became the interpretation of religious scriptures. As a protector of dharma, he became the savior of innocent people. Those suffering from injustice would simply remember Grihapati’s name, and injustice would be eradicated. As a spiritual radiance, the mere sight of him purified the heart. The mere sight of him would automatically calm the mental disturbances. Grihapati’s life became a symbol of sacrifice, service, and the establishment of dharma. People said that this was no ordinary human being, but a part of the power of Mahadev himself, who had come to this earth to keep the light of dharma burning. Thus, Grihapati’s fame spread far and wide. The mere mention of his name began to erase sins, and people were inspired to follow the path of dharma. When Grihapati reached the age of 25, another miraculous event occurred. Goddess Parvati herself assumed the form of an ideal girl and married Grihapati. In this sacred event, The marriage ceremony was unlike any other ordinary wedding. Lord Brahma himself came and performed the rites. All the gods, disguised as ordinary humans, witnessed this auspicious occasion. Although the wedding was conducted with utmost simplicity, its divinity was unparalleled. During the seven rounds, flowers rained from the sky, and auspicious sounds filled the air. In his newlywed life, Grihapati showed the world the path to an ideal marriage. He respected his wife completely, consulted her in every decision, and supported her in household chores. He considered her happiness his own and never expressed anger towards her. Thus, he became not only a husband but a true companion. Over time, Grihapati’s family grew. Two radiant sons were born to him: Ganesha and Kartikeya. When Ganesha was born, the divine fragrance of turmeric and rice permeated the house. This child was intelligent and auspicious from birth. His arrival easily resolved every problem. Trade and prosperity began to flourish in the family and society. At the birth of the second son, peacock calls were heard everywhere. This boy was courageous, just, and skilled in martial arts. He was naturally skilled. From childhood, he displayed a strong sense of opposition to injustice. Even as a father, Grihapati taught the world new lessons. He treated his children like friends, patiently listening to their problems and lovingly resolving them. He imparted knowledge of religion and values, but never used corporal punishment. He always corrected them with love and understanding. He himself became his sons’ first teacher. He believed that education should not be limited to books but should shape life. He valued character building, humility, and a spirit of service above all else. Along with his family life, Grihapati performed great work for the upliftment of society. He opened free schools for poor children, promoted women’s education, prioritized practical knowledge and skills, and spread true knowledge of religion and ethics. He opposed the evils of the caste system, denounced untouchability, and ensured equal rights for women, opposed superstition and fraud, formulated sound trade policies, fostered a spirit of cooperation, provided financial assistance to the poor, and took a firm stand against corruption. These reforms transformed society. A new consciousness was instilled in him. People began to see Grihapati not just as a seeker but as a protector of righteousness and justice. The fame of Grihapati’s incarnation spread everywhere. The light of righteousness, education, and prosperity spread in people’s lives. But this light proved unbearable to the lord of darkness. A mighty demon named Andhakasura grew jealous of Grihapati’s fame. This demon was extremely powerful. His army was invincible and he had received a boon from Lord Shiva himself that no god could slay him. He possessed unparalleled power in illusion. When he saw Grihapati establishing righteousness and truth in society, intense anger and jealousy arose in his heart. He sent his messengers and announced: Whoever calls himself a protector of righteousness must confront me. I am Andhakasura. Not even a god can kill me. So what harm can an ordinary human being do to me? Grihapati was calm but firm. He heard the message and replied with a smile. No matter how powerful unrighteousness is, its destruction is certain by the light of truth. Andhakasura, with his immense army, marched towards Kashi. The thunder of drums and the sound of conch shells shook the earth. His magical spell spread all around. Sometimes fire rained from the sky, sometimes serpents emerged from the earth. Grahapati meditated and chanted the Tripura Sundari mantra and uttered the name of Shiva, Om Namah Shivaya. A divine aura spread around him. Andhakasur arrogantly said, Grahapati, Do you think that with your little penance and reforms you will eradicate darkness? I am invincible. Even the gods cannot destroy me. Grahapati calmly said, Andhaka, arrogance is the cause of destruction. The boon has not made you invincible but even more vulnerable. I am the protector of Dharma, and today your tyranny will end here. Andhaka raised his sword in anger and, tearing the sky apart, said, Get ready. Today you will end here. The battle began. Andhakasur released a fiery arrow. But Grahapati invoked the water mantra generated by his penance, and the fire instantly transformed into cool water. He created an illusion. Thousands of Andhakas appeared in his form. Grahapati He recalled the Shiva Sutras, and immediately a divine light appeared, destroying all illusions. Andhaka’s mace, like a cataclysmic weapon, fell upon Grihapati. However, the Shivadatta trident that appeared in his hand stopped it. At the crucial moment, Andhakasur began to tire, but his anger only increased. He roared, You cannot kill me. The boon of the gods has made me invincible. Grihapati replied with divine brilliance, No god will slay you, Andhaka. Your end is destined at the hands of a human, and I am the very human blessed by Shiva to protect dharma. Grihapati, chanting Om Shivoham, raised his trident. Divine fire emerged from his body. The fire from the trident pierced Andhakasur. His illusionary spell was shattered. The army fled, and Andhaka fell to the ground, devastated. With Andhaka’s fall, the voices of the gods echoed from the sky: Truth has triumphed. Adharma has ended. Flowers began to shower in all directions. Grihapati told the people to remember that dharma is established not only with weapons but with truth, service, and love. This is the greatest power of dharma. From that day on, Grihapati’s name became immortal as the destroyer of unrighteousness and protector of dharma. Grihapati stayed there and worked not only as a conqueror but as a protector of dharma for the welfare of the people. He preached to society that truth and dharma are protected not only with weapons but also with education, service, and goodwill. He rebuilt the village destroyed by Andhakasura. He provided food, clothing, and shelter to the victims. He re-promoted education and values. He spread the message of peace and unity far and wide. People would come to him with their problems, and Grihapati would become a beacon of solution in their lives. Gradually, his name became revered as a living incarnation of Shiva. As time passed, Grihapati’s fame spread in all directions. But when his incarnation was complete, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati themselves appeared. The divine drum resonated in the sky. The Ganges began to flow, and the bells in the temples of Kashi began to ring spontaneously. Shiva said compassionately, Son, Grihapati, you established Dharma on earth. You destroyed Adharma and showed society the path of education, service, and truth. Now the time has come for you to return to your true abode. Grihapati replied, Mahadev, if you are pleased, I have one request. May the lamp of Dharma and Truth burn in the hearts of people as long as my memory remains on this earth. Shiva blessed him. May your name live on for ages. The mere memory of you will diminish man’s sins and purify his heart. Saying this, Shiva and Parvati took Grihapati with them. They departed for Kailash in a divine chariot. Grihapati’s immortal glory became immortal. People began to call him Grihapati, the protector of Dharma. The stories of his life were sung by priests and sages. In every village, people pledged to follow Dharma like Grihapati, to spread love in their families and justice in society.
