Why Did Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Walk into the Sea & Disappear?
Why Did Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Walk into the Sea & Disappear?
Hey what is this? Why is the Puri beach deserted today? In the darkness of the night, a saint is running towards the waves of the sea. Eyes closed, hands raised up. Only one name on the lips, Jagannath Jagannath Jagannath. His disciples are running after him. They are shouting. Mahaprabhu, wait, don’t go into the water. But he did not stop and then he disappeared into the waves. There was a complete uproar because he was no ordinary saint. He was Chaitanya Mahaprabhu himself. Where did the greatest devotional saint of entire India go?
Did he drown or did Jagannath ji himself merge him into himself? Let’s go to 16th century Puri and witness this truly mysterious and heart-touching tale. This is about the 16th century. A child was born in Navadwip city of Bengal. He was named Vishvambhar. But later the world will know him by the name of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was different from his childhood. Very beautiful, very smart. But the most special thing was that there was a supernatural glow on his face. Mother Shachidevi used to say, my son is not an ordinary child. This is the incarnation of God himself. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu grew up. He studied Sanskrit and Nyaya Shastra. He became a great scholar. There was no one to match him in Navadwip. But one day something happened which changed his life completely. He went to perform the Shraddha of his father. There he met a saint Ishwar Puri. Ishwar Puri gave the mantra of Krishna name to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. From that very day Chaitanya Mahaprabhu changed. Day and night, only one name, Krishna, whether you get up or sit down, Krishna. Krishna eating and drinking. Krishna while sleeping and waking. Sometimes crying, sometimes laughing, sometimes dancing, sometimes singing. The entire Navadvipa went mad after seeing him. He said, what happened to Vishvambhar Pandit? But it does not matter to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He formed a circle of devotees around him. Named the Saint of Navadwip. All of them together would chant Hari’s name on the streets, dance, sing and fill the entire city with their hymns. But one day Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took a big decision. He told his mother, mother, I want to take sanyas.
Mother Shachidevi was heartbroken. She said, son, you are my only son. How will I live without you? Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said, Mother, my work is not limited to Navadwip only. It is all over India. I have to go to Jagannath ji. Have to go completely. My service will start from there. Mother Shachidevi kept crying but could not stop. He finally said, son go but make a promise not to go too far from Puri and take care of me Rigena Chaitanya Mahaprabhu promised and then set out, becoming a Sanyasi at the age of 24 and changing his name to Shri Krishna Chaitanya, after many days of journey Chaitanya Mahaprabhu reached Puri and as he saw the peak of the temple tears started flowing from his eyes he said Jaggu ji I have come, your Vishvambhar, he ran inside the temple and reached the sanctum sanctorum and as he saw the idol of Jagannath ji Chaitanya Mahaprabhu fell on the ground unconscious the priest got scared and said who is this saint what has happened to him Chaitanya Mahaprabhu remained unconscious for many hours then when he regained consciousness he stood up and did something which no one had ever seen he started dancing in front of the temple with his hands raised like a mad man with his eyes closed and only Jagannath Jagannath on his lips the whole temple was watching. Thousands of devotees, priests and servants of Raja Pratap Rudradev, were all speechless. The news spread rapidly. A Bengali saint has come. The name is Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. They keep dancing and singing all day long. He was a great scholar in Puri and a great devotee of Lord Jagannath. Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya, the chief pandit in the king’s court. He was a scholar of Advaita Vedanta and considered devotion as a weakness. Sarvabhaum said, who is this Bengali? He dances and sings all day long. Is this some monk? A true monk focuses on knowledge. Reads the scriptures. This is just a drama. Sarvabhauma invited Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to his house. He said, Maharaj, come to my place. I will teach you the scriptures. I will connect your devotion with knowledge. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu folded his hands. He said, okay Pandit ji, I will come. The next day Chaitanya Mahaprabhu reached Sarvabhauma’s house. Sarvabhauma made him sit and started teaching him the Vedanta Sutras. Sarvabhauma taught Vedanta to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu for seven days. Very difficult sutra, very deep explanation and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu kept listening to him silently. He didn’t say a word, just kept shaking his head. After seven days Sarvabhauma said, Maharaj, now you must have understood. Advaita Vedanta is the highest. Devotion is below that. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu smiled and said, Pandit ji, I want to tell you something. I have heard your entire explanation but I did not understand anything. Sovereign fours listened for seven days and nothing came? Pandit ji, to be honest, you were not giving the direct meaning of the sutras. You were adding your own meaning. You are not telling what Ved Vyas originally wrote. Sovereign’s face turned red. He said, are you questioning my scholarship? Pandit ji, I am not asking a question, I am telling the truth. Would you mind showing me a thread I can talk to? The universal showed a formula. He said, tell me what does this mean? And then whatever Chaitanya Mahaprabhu did, the universal could not forget it throughout his life. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu explained 61 different meanings of that one sutra. One after another, each meaning deeper than the previous, each meaning more precise than the previous and most importantly. Every meaning said the same thing in the end. Lord Krishna is the ultimate truth and devotion to him is the highest. The sovereign kept listening. His mouth remained open. His eyes widened. The sovereign finally gave up. He said, Maharaj, who are you? You are not an ordinary monk. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said softly, Pandit ji, I am just a devotee. But if you really want to see, then look at me carefully. Sarvabhauma looked carefully and for a moment, just a moment, he saw. In place of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, there stood Lord Krishna himself. Wearing yellow clothes and holding a flute in his hand, Sarvabhauma fell to the ground smiling. He said at Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s feet, Lord, you are Krishna himself, and I boasted of teaching you the scriptures. Please forgive me. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu lifted Sarvabhauma and hugged him, Pandit ji, what is there to forgive? You too are mine. Till now, you were bound by the shackles of knowledge. Today, you have been freed. After that day, Sarvabhauma became the greatest devotee. He abandoned Advaita Vedanta and became Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s supreme disciple. This news spread throughout Puri. King Pratap Rudradev also got the news. The king was very happy and said, If a scholar like Sarvabhauma accepted him, then I too would like to meet him. The king invited Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to the palace. But Chaitanya Mahaprabhu refused, saying, I am a sanyasi. I cannot enter the palace. This is not the duty of a sanyasi. The king was deeply saddened but did not give up. He thought of a solution. The time for the Rath Yatra arrived. The king himself picked up a golden broom and began sweeping the path for the chariot. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was watching. Tears welled up in Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s eyes. He said, This king who sweeps himself. I thought he was a king, but he is actually a servant of Jagannath. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu immediately changed his mind and agreed to meet the king. The two met. The king touched Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s feet. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu embraced him. From that day on, the king and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu became very close. The king met Chaitanya Mahaprabhu every day, serving him and listening to his words. Every year during the Rath Yatra, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu performed a ritual. He would create special scenes. He would dance in front of the chariot with such force and devotion that the onlookers would begin to dance. Millions of people would cry after listening to his hymns. Thousands would faint after watching his dance. The Puri Rath Yatra was now incomplete without Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Time passed. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu stayed in Puri. For 18 long years, he visited the temple every day. He would dance every day, sing every day. But with time, his devotion deepened. He now lived less in this world and more in the world of Krishna. Sometimes he would be unconscious for days. Sometimes he would cry all night. His disciples would care for him. His main disciples were Swarup Damodar and Ramanand Rai. They both became worried. They said, Gurudev’s condition is deteriorating. He is drifting further and further away from this world. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu would often go to the seashore, look at the waves, and as he watched them, he would start crying, saying, These waves remind me of the Yamuna. These are the Gopis yearning for Krishna. His condition worsened every day. He grew weak, but the fire of devotion burned brighter. He would stay awake many nights, simply calling out, Krishna, Krishna. Then came the day of the month of Ashadha, the time of the Rath Yatra. He had turned 48. That day, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had been different since morning. He was very calm and serious. He called his disciples and met each one, placing his hand on their heads and blessing them. Swarup Damodar asked, Gurudev, why are you acting as if you are taking leave? Chaitanya Mahaprabhu smiled and said, Swarup, just like that. Today, my mind is different. That day was the Rath Yatra. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came to dance in front of the chariot as usual. But today his dance was different. Very emotional, very deep. People were watching. Thousands of people were astonished. Everyone exclaimed, Today Mahaprabhu’s dance is something else. As if it were a dance of farewell. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu fell unconscious while dancing. His disciples took care of him, lifted him up and brought him to his hut. By evening, he regained consciousness, but he would not get up. Swarup told his disciples, I am not. Take me to the seashore. I have a different mind. I want to go to the waves. Swarup Damodar was frightened. He said, Gurudev, you are weak in this condition. It’s raining too. Take Swarup. Just once, understand my last wish. The disciples supported Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and carried him to the seashore. It was raining heavily that night. Darkness reigned. The waves crashed with a terrifying sound in the distance. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu sat down on the sand. The disciples stood behind him. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu watched the waves and repeatedly said, Look at the Yamuna riverbank, the gopis are dancing. Look, my Krishna is playing the flute. The disciples noticed that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was seeing something they couldn’t see. There was a supernatural gleam in his eyes. Suddenly, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu stood up, raised his hands, and started walking toward the sea. Swarup Damodar screamed, Gurudev, where are you going? Stop! But Chaitanya Mahaprabhu didn’t hear him. He closed his eyes and simply walked. He was going, towards the waves. The disciples ran after him. But Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s pace was very fast, as if someone was pulling him. The rain was slippery. The disciples ran, slipping and falling. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu kept calling just one name: Jagannath, Jagannath, Jagannath. He reached the sea. The water reached his feet, then his knees, then his waist. Swarup Damodar also entered the water. He said, Gurudev, come out, you will drown. But Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was smiling. He said, Swarup, don’t worry. Jagguji has called me. Today we are meeting. And then a huge wave came. A very huge wave. It engulfed Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Swarup Damodar extended his hand, and when the water calmed, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was gone. Completely vanished. Swarup Damodar and the other disciples stood in the water, hands in the air, eyes wide open. They searched the sea and the shore all night. By morning, they could not find Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s body. Neither in the water nor on the shore. The news spread far and wide throughout Puri. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had disappeared into the sea and never returned. Puri wept. King Pratap Rudradeva came running. He asked, What happened? How could this be? The king sent his entire army. Boats into the sea. The entire shore was searched. But nothing was found. Not a single bone. Not a single piece of cloth. The pundits of Puri thought deeply and came to a conclusion. A few days later, the chief priest of the temple had a dream. Jagannath Ji was standing before him. The priest asked, Lord, where has our Chaitanya gone? Has he drowned? Jagannath Ji smiled and said, Priest, Chaitanya did not drown; he was my most beloved devotee. He served me for 18 years. Now his devotion had reached its peak. He prayed to meet me. So what did you do, Lord? I absorbed him into myself. I myself came in the waves of the ocean and absorbed Chaitanya into my deity. The priest asked, Lord, how is this possible? Jagannath Ji said, Priest, Chaitanya is no ordinary person. He wasn’t a devotee. He was the incarnation of Krishna and Radha, a part of me. Now that part had returned to me. The priest woke up with tears in his eyes. He ran to tell everyone in the morning. After hearing the entire story, he stood with his head bowed. But that wasn’t the end of the story. The next day, a temple attendant witnessed another miracle. When the sanctum sanctorum was opened, a small garland was placed at the feet of the idol of Jagannath. It was made of fresh flowers, but no one had offered it the night before. The priest picked up the garland. It was made of fragrant Bengal flowers, and he saw that along with the garland was a small piece of cloth, saffron in color. Swarup Damodar was called. He saw the piece of cloth and fell to the ground. He said, This is our Gurudev’s robe. I personally dressed him in this cloth. Everyone understood. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had truly merged into Jagannath and left behind his robe and a robe for identification. That cloth was kept in a special corner of the temple. It remains there even today. Every year, on the death anniversary of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, that cloth is worshipped. Back in the temple, Balabhadra asked Jagannath, Why have you truly absorbed Chaitanya into yourself? Jagannath replied, Dau Dada, his devotion had reached such a height that he could no longer remain in this body. His body was left for me. For 18 years, he chanted my name. He danced for me, he cried for me. What was the use of that clay body? I absorbed him into myself. Subhadra asked, We will never see him again. Jagannath replied, Sister, why not? Whenever a devotee dances in my name, that is Chaitanya. Whenever someone sings kirtans, that is Chaitanya. It has not ended. It has spread to every devotee. Lakshmi heard it and said, Swami, that is why you are Jagannath. You merge your devotee into yourself. Jagannath replied, The Goddess, the devotee, and the God are not separate. Only the feelings of one are visible, the feelings of the other remain hidden. When the feelings are revealed, The two become one. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu passed away, but his influence remained. His disciples started a new tradition. The Gaudiya Vaishnava sect spread throughout Bengal, Orissa, Manipur, and Assam. Even today, millions of people follow this tradition. Later, a saint, Srila Prabhupada, took Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s devotion to the world. Today, millions of devotees revere Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in America, Europe, and Africa. The mantra Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, which resonates throughout the world, was given by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Even today, there is a place in Puri called the Tota Gopinath Temple. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s old clothes are kept here. Every year, millions of devotees visit, bowing their heads in reverence. So, dear devotees, this is the story of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He was a saint who lived for devotion, died for devotion, and ultimately merged with devotion. His death is a mystery. But the real mystery is whether he died. Was he truly present or did he merge with Lord Jagannath? What does this story teach us? Most importantly, true devotion knows no bounds. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu spent 18 years doing just one thing: chanting Krishna’s name, dancing, singing, and crying, and finally, God merged him with Him. Secondly, devotion also brings knowledge. Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya was a learned man, but when he embraced devotion, he gained knowledge that years of study hadn’t provided. Thirdly, God’s name is supreme. Remain a scholar, remain a king, remain a sanyasi, but remember to chant God’s name at least once every day. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu taught the entire world that there is nothing but the name. And fourthly, death is not the end of life. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is still present today, in every kirtan, in every bhajan, in the heart of every true devotee. You just need the eyes to recognize Him. If you go to a temple today and see someone dancing, singing, and crying while chanting the name of Jagannath, stop. Try it. Perhaps it is Chaitanya Mahaprabhu himself. In a new form, in a new body, but with the same devotion and love. If you enjoyed this true and mysterious story, please comment, Jai Jagannath and Jai Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
