There is a mystery surrounding the worship of Kaal Bhairav that has puzzled people for centuries. After all, why is such offering made to Kaal Bhairav which most people do not associate with religion? The roots of this tradition are not in any temple but are linked to a skull which Kaal Bhairav kept wandering in the entire universe with in his hand for ages. After all, how did that skull come into the hands of Kaal Bhairav? The story begins with an act of arrogance at the beginning of creation that led to a fierce dispute between Lord Vishnu and Brahma.

No one had any idea that day that this dispute was going to give birth to the most fierce form of Lord Shiva. Kaal Bhairav is that form of Shiva which is not only a symbol of destruction but also of justice. But this justice began with an ego. Let us return to that period of creation when his own creation had convinced Lord Brahma that there was no one greater than him and to prove this belief true, he first decided to challenge the deity with whom his own birth was linked. Lord Brahma was reading in the direction where Lord Vishnu was resting on Sheshnag. Brahma went straight to him. Shri Narayan, say namaste to Brahmadev Shri Narayan, I feel that now the time has come to accept one truth, which truth is that this entire universe is my creation. The world, planets, stars and living beings are all created by me. Therefore it would be appropriate that all three accept me as the supreme and you too. Perhaps you are forgetting one thing Brahmadev, are you born from my navel lotus, so do you mean to say that I am inferior to you Shri Narayan I am only reminding you the truth, I do not consider myself superior to anyone but I also do not believe that anyone should declare himself as the supreme and that becomes the truth. Whatever you may say Shri Narayan, the truth is that I am the creator of this universe. And Brahmadev does not decide the truth with ego.

Then suddenly a huge Jyotirlinga pillar of light appeared in their midst. Its flames were rising up to the infinite sky and its base was lost in the unfathomable depths of darkness. What kind of power is this? Vishnu looked up and down. Neither its beginning nor its end is visible. If either of us finds its end then the question of superiority will also end. I accept. After this Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Varaha and started walking downwards. While Brahma assumed the form of a swan and flew upwards in search of the peak of that pillar of fire. After searching for a long time, Lord Vishnu realized that it was not possible to find the base of that pillar. He stopped his search. How can one find an end to that which is truly infinite? I have to accept the truth. After this they returned back. But on the other hand Brahma’s mind was disturbed. They were constantly moving up. Still the peak was not visible. The further they went the more endless the pillar of fire seemed. He said to himself, no, I cannot fail. If I also return empty handed then how will my superiority be proved? At the same time his eyes fell on a Ketaki flower which was falling from above. O flower, are you coming from the top of this pillar of fire? Yes Lord, when we return you will say that I had reached the peak. But this would be untrue. After a few moments of hesitation, Ketaki agreed to his proposal. When both the gods returned to that place again, Lord Vishnu said without any hesitation, I could not find the base of this pillar of fire. But I have reached its peak. Did you actually reach the summit? Lord Brahma? I witness. Brahmadev actually reached its peak. Now it is clear that there is no one greater than me in the three worlds. Victory achieved on the basis of falsehood is never a real victory. Lord Brahma.

Brahma’s fifth face laughed. False Today I will be taught the truth. Or are you talking about that Bairagi who wanders in the cremation grounds with ashes applied on his body. How can one who lives among ghosts and spirits be like me? I will never bow before that Bairagi. As soon as these words came out from the mouth of the fifth face of Brahma, the entire universe trembled. At that very moment that infinite Jyotirlinga was filled with intense light. Lord Vishnu immediately bowed his head. He said in a serious tone, Brahmadev, you have crossed the limit, the very next moment Lord Shiva himself appeared from that Jyotirlinga. Lord Vishnu bowed down and saluted while Brahma stood stunned. Lord Shiva first looked at Ketaki and asked, Ketaki, is this true? Ketaki shivered. No Mahadev, is this your truth? Brahma remained silent for a few moments but then the fifth face of Brahma said, why should I consider that god greater than me who has not created anything, stop it Brahmadev. Now Lord Shiva’s patience had run out, he said in a serious tone, I could tolerate your lie Brahma and your ego too, but insulting the truth when it is in front of you is the cause of destruction. As soon as he said this, terrible black energy started appearing around Lord Shiva. Within no time that energy was transforming into a monstrous form. His eyes were burning like embers. His body was as black as darkness and his radiance was so intense that even the gods could not dare to look at him. Lord Shiva looked at that terrible form and said Bhairava this ego has invited its own punishment. Now justice will be done.

With the command of Lord Shiva the entire universe was plunged into terrifying silence. Mahadev’s orders are my religion. Now the end of ego is certain. Brahma’s fifth face was still not ready to bow down. Brahmadev, there is still time. Take back your words. I will not bow. Even if death itself stands before me. Kaal Bhairava neither picked up any weapon nor fought any battle. He reached directly in front of Brahma and the next moment the fifth face was able to understand something. Before that, Brahma’s fifth head got separated from the body and fell down. The face which was filled with pride till a few moments ago, was now lying lifeless on the ground. At that very moment, it seemed as if Brahma’s entire womb broke and his remaining four faces bowed down. Mahadev, my knowledge has lost. My ego had blinded me. Please forgive me. This punishment was not for you. Brahma was for your ego. But at that very moment another strange incident happened. The severed head lying on the ground suddenly turned into a dry skull and while flying, it stuck directly to the hand of Kaal Bhairav and from here began the most difficult test of Kaal Bhairav. Kaal Bhairav tried to separate that skull with his hand. But she clung to his hand as if she would stay there forever. At that very moment Lord Shiva said, Bhairava, you have done justice but because of cutting off Brahma’s head, now you will also have to bear the burden of Brahmahatya sin. If this is the price of my duty then I accept it too Mahadev. Kaal Bhairav kept wandering in the three worlds for ages. But neither did Brahma’s skull separate from his hand nor did the sin of Brahmahatya leave him. After wandering for ages, his journey finally brought him to a place where even karma itself loses its effect. Kashi is the eternal city of Lord Shiva. This was no ordinary city. It is said that Kashi is situated on the trident of Lord Shiva himself and this is the place where even the biggest sins are destroyed. As soon as Kaal Bhairav entered the boundaries of Kashi, a wonderful incident happened. The sin of Brahmahatya killing a Brahmin was haunting him for ages. He suddenly started backing away. At that very moment, Brahma’s skull, which was stuck to his hand, also separated and fell on the ground. The skull that had made him wander in all the three worlds was now lying on the ground in front of him. This place later became famous as Kapal Mochan Tirtha. At that very moment Lord Shiva appeared there. Bhairava, you endured the punishment and also performed your duty. From today onwards, if anyone has any authority in Kashi after me, it will be yours. The account of the deeds of whoever comes to this city will be presented before you first. You will be the protector, judge and police officer of Kashi. Mahadev, protecting your orders is my religion and protecting justice in Kashi is my duty. Since then, Kaal Bhairav is called the Kotwal of Kashi. Even today it is believed that permission of Kaal Bhairav is necessary before visiting Baba Vishwanath. But this is where a mystery arises. If the curse of Kaal Bhairav had ended then why do millions of people still offer liquor to him? And this mystery later gave birth to a unique tradition. Time passed, eras changed. Gradually many sadhaks, Aghoris and Tantriks started worshipping him. It is said that once some Tantrikas did rigorous sadhana of Kaal Bhairav. After years of penance, when Kaal Bhairav appeared before them, those devotees folded their hands and asked, Lord, which offering is most dear to you ? Who is man’s biggest enemy? His own ego, Lord, show us the way. Whoever controls you, surrender him at my feet. And what will be its symbol, Lord? Alcohol. Because the ego that I left with him is what I love the most.
