ATM Murder: 4 Cold-Blooded Killers CAUGHT!

A wave of kidnappings, robberies, and murders bring terror to the streets of Southern California. Two pairs of twisted lovers are on the rampage. And with each brazen strike, they’re becoming more violent in a lethal, wicked attraction. September 1991. The residents of West Covina, California, are living in fear.

A wave of random murders and kidnappings is sweeping through the area. Victims are being targeted in places everyone expects to be safe. Shirley Denagin works as an executive assistant to the president of a golf equipment supply company. >> She waved at me goodbye, and I waved goodbye. >> She’s out running errands at a popular mall, a place she doesn’t normally think twice about her security, especially [music] when it’s crowded at lunchtime.

>> Get out of the car. Don’t say a word. Get out OF THE CAR. SHUT UP. BE QUIET. GIVE ME YOUR HANDS. >> THEY FROM HER. THEY take her jewelry. They take her ATM cards. ATM cards are big to this group now. They want cash. >> What are you making? GET IT OUT. WHAT ARE YOU MAKING? >> Shirley is terrorized into revealing her bank PIN numbers.

>> Traffic is snarled on the 60 Freeway. They pull over. >> Shirley Denogean had to be terrified. She couldn’t resist because they had guns. And so she had to be just acutely aware that she was about to be killed. >> Be quiet. Keep it quiet. Don’t draw attention to yourself, okay? >> Someone hears the gunshots and calls police.

>> A radio car went up to check her along the side and found Shirley Lane on the side next to a chain link fence. >> As the hours pass and she doesn’t return home, her husband Ray grows increasingly worried. He phones anywhere he thinks she might be. >> No one’s heard from Shirley. By 9:00, I call the police department and they yell at me says, “Haven’t you been watching the news? There’s been a horrible incident on the Pomona Freeway and we think that’s your wife.

” That was my first heads up on what was going on. You’re frozen. You You don’t know whether to cry, yell, or nothing. If you ever had met Shirley, you would never ever forget her. You felt her aura, her presence everywhere that she went. >> Shirley is the second woman in 3 days to be abducted from the mall.

 Panic in the city reaches fever pitch. A special task force is hunting day and night to locate the ruthless killers and is struggling to reassure terrified residents. >> All hell breaks loose. Not only in the media, but as far as the cops go. The cops are now determined to put an end to this. >> It looked like a shark tank with radio cars going around and trying to provide as much protection as possible.

Uh we had a awful lot of press coverage. The TV news hit it really heavy. >> Whether the victims happen to be male or female at this point appears not to make any difference to these people that are committing these crimes. >> Residents are under siege. >> It changes your your whole outlook. You know, not just to be safe in the evening time, but also, you know, in the afternoon, in the morning.

>> I’ve worked for probably the last 15 years on a night shift at a bank and they offered a course on on tear gas. >> We just wanted the public to be aware of what was going on and to be alert. >> Two days later, the complex investigation is finally getting somewhere. The suspected killers have been tracked down to a West Covina apartment.

 It’s believed there’s also a young child inside. >> These are people that have no regard for human life. >> The police know all about the two men and a woman they’re planning to arrest. John Lewis is seen as their leader, a lethal trigger man. >> John told people I’m not going out without a fight. >> Vincent Hubbard is his partner in terror, while his girlfriend, their getaway driver, is ex-con Robin Machuca.

They have an arsenal of weapons and have proven to be merciless. >> Shut the hell up. >> You know, they’ve stolen guns, high-powered weapons. >> We knew of a shotgun, .357 Magnum, and a .38 caliber revolver at a minimum that were inside there. >> The big unanswered question, why are the suspects on a murderous crime spree? Police will need to take them alive to find out.

>> They move in close. They got some flashbangs. >> It all began 2 months earlier as July 4th celebrations were winding down. 12 miles from West Covina is the small suburban city of Monrovia. 22-year-old Jose Avina is heading to his girlfriend’s place when his truck is hit from behind. The driver approaches Jose.

>> He had no chance of defending himself, no chance of trying to figure out what was going on. >> A passing motorist dials 911. >> The victim had been shot one time with a shotgun at extremely close range. There did not appear to be a robbery in the sense that he still had his wallet with him, which contained money.

It looked like it could have been a gang killing because of the time and location and then the brutality involved in it. Has possibility of a gang tie. >> Gang violence is on the increase and becoming more widespread. In 1991, there was a huge crack epidemic that had infected the area. So, there was all kinds of car jackings and burglaries and homicides.

Law enforcement is struggling to cope with turf wars between arch enemies, the Bloods and Crips street gangs, and whole communities feel under siege. Jose Avila becomes yet another unsolved murder. >> There was 15 homicides that occurred on that July 4th weekend. The case kind of just goes away. Nobody’s really sure what happened.

>> Police have no way of knowing 21-year-old triggerman John Lewis and his twisted followers are just getting started. >> A month later in West Covina, restaurant owner Augustine Ramirez and his wife are heading home with the night’s earnings. Lewis is accompanied again by 26-year-old Vincent Hubbard, once arch enemies in rival gangs.

 Now, they’ve formed an unholy alliance and are pumped up on drugs to take on the world. >> Give me your money. >> What? What do you >> Give me your money. Don’t play with me. >> Oh, come on. Hold on, man. >> Don’t shut up. >> I’ll give it to you. Here you go. Give me your wallet, too. >> No problem. Okay, here’s the wallet.

Here you go. >> Here, now just calm down. >> Don’t shoot me. Just don’t shoot. >> Wife sees her husband on the ground. He’s taken a shot to the stomach. Clinging to life, Augustine is rushed to a nearby hospital. >> Sad irony about this is that his son was a paramedic at the hospital. One of the first people to work on him was his son.

>> Augustine Ramirez is mortally wounded. He dies with his family at his bedside. All his wife can tell detectives is that two black males in a car shot him. Augustine’s restaurant is popular and successful, but his killers miscalculated how much money he’d be carrying. >> The motivation appeared to be robbery and they probably thought that there would be a lot more money than there actually was in the evening’s receipts.

>> The following night, 20 miles east, 55-year-old Eugene Valdez pulls off Route 60 after a 30-minute drive. He’s exhausted and needs a break. Lurking nearby are Lewis and Hubbard. This time, they have company. 26-year-old gang member Robin Machuca is dating Hubbard. 20-year-old Eileen Huber is Lewis’s girlfriend and the only one in the car with a clean rap sheet.

>> I want that car. >> The pattern of these killers was to take their victims quickly and off guard [music] so that they could immediately control the situation. >> Open up the door or I’ll blast. Open it up. Call 911. Hang out over there. Hurry up. GIVE ME YOUR DAMN WATCH. TAKE THE DAMN WATCH OFF. I ain’t got all day.

>> They put him in the back seat and they start to drive. Now, he doesn’t know where they’re driving, but he knows that they’re seem to be backtracking and then pretty soon they’re going up a windy mountain road. And when they get about 10 miles up road, away from civilization, the car pulls over. >> It’s a notorious location.

>> We were probably going out there once or twice a month for a body dump. >> Get him out of Get him out of the car. >> Eugene Valdez was scared out of his mind and all he knew is that when he got out of his car, he was going to die. >> Get over there. Get the hell over there. Move. What? You shoot him. >> The gun misfires, allowing Eugene to leap into the unknown.

>> Why didn’t you shoot him? >> I tried to shoot him. >> You let him get away. >> Stupid gun stopped. >> It’s your fault he got away. >> Where is he at? >> His four abductors don’t leave witnesses. Which one will enter the abyss and search for prey. A ruthless pack of killers are on a rampage. John Lewis, Vincent Hubbard, Robin Machuca, and Eileen Huber.

Carjack victim Eugene Valdez leaps off a steep bank before they can shoot him. Not interested in risking their own lives to hunt him down, the men get in Valdez’s car and drive off. He suffered some pretty serious head trauma. >> But he’s able to kind of maintain his wits about him. He stays calm. When he believes that everybody has left, he actually crawls back up the embankment seeking help.

>> Eugene flags down a passing car and contacts police. He describes his abductors as two young black males accompanied by a woman who followed in another vehicle. He tells detectives the ringleader was prepared to kill him just to steal parts for his car. >> The only reason he didn’t want him to shoot in the car is because he didn’t want a bloody back seat.

That’s why they had to come up here and get away from everyone and shoot him outside of the vehicle. >> No one’s under any illusions how close Eugene came to being killed. >> This is about 1:00 in the morning. It is pitch black up here. Runs comes up this bank and leaps over the edge. And he has no idea what’s on the other side of this edge.

>> Five nights later, Juan Rios and his fiance, Sonia Aguirre, are out for a romantic evening in West Covina when they stop by an ATM. >> Give me all your money. >> Hey, hey, don’t play with me. Give me all your money. Go ahead and give me all the money in your account. >> And they want money. They want as much money as they can get.

They’re going to take it out of what he just took out of the bank. If they can go someplace else with the ATM cards and get more money, they’re going to do it. >> Vincent forces Sonia Aguirre to hand over her jewelry. >> You feel nice. Give me your damn ring. Oh, I’m going to shoot you in your head. Yeah, I got it. TAKE IT OFF.

 Give me your ring. >> I’m not playing with you. >> Like two vultures devouring their prey, the couple is stripped clean of anything of value. Their ordeal isn’t over. >> Tension in the car is pretty hot. Victims are being threatened. They’re scared out of their minds. This is a nice neighborhood. This type of thing isn’t supposed to happen.

>> Lewis and Hubbard see a passing patrol car and get spooked. >> They drive about 3 miles. Car pulls over. They get told get out of the car. Don’t talk to anybody. Don’t say anything. We’re going to let you go. And they’re gone. >> They were in fear that they were actually going to be killed regardless of what they did.

 They were very fortunate. >> Huber and John and Robin and Vince were all living in apartment building that’s less than a half a mile away from this ATM machine. >> The gang savors the spoils of their latest raid. The cash is quickly blown on hard drugs and alcohol. >> Most people, if they knew they were engaging in a crime, would feel guilty.

Would feel anxious. These were sociopaths. They didn’t have an emotional reaction. They were going to take what they felt they were entitled to. >> Three of the four have spent time behind bars and festered over the reasons why. Their shared twisted logic is now to simply steal whatever they want and to hell with the consequences for others.

>> They saw normal society as something to be envied and they were jealous and angry that they couldn’t be part of that. And that’s the feeding ground from which they took their victims. >> All four have been surrounded by violence since childhood. John Lewis and his half-sister Robin Machuca grew up on the mean streets of Baldwin Park.

>> At that time, this was training ground for killers and gangsters and thugs. >> And life at home is equally brutal. >> They were raised by their stepfather who sexually abused them. >> The message is that there is no adult to protect or care. No one will step in and [music] help. No one’s there to protect you.

 No one will take care of you. >> John Lewis retains simmering hatred towards his stepfather who gets Robin pregnant when she’s just 12. She runs away, puts the child in foster care, and finds protection inside the notorious Crips street gang. But there’s a price to be paid. For 2 years, she’s expected to follow orders and rob and steal just like the other members.

>> For many individuals, the gang represents family. And where there’s family, there’s often loyalty. >> She’s soon hooked on drugs and at 15 is arrested for burglary and sent to juvenile detention, telling officers she needs a place to stay. After release, she continues to have run-ins with the law. Robin becomes nothing more than a street thug and begins dating fellow [ __ ] Vincent Hubbard.

>> He’s looking out for her, she’s looking out for him. What Vince does, Robin does. What Robin does, Vince does. >> Well, dude, what is this? Where you at? You in the wrong neighborhood, dog. >> Calm down. >> What is this about? >> Her half-brother, John Lewis, a member of the rival Bloods, is not impressed.

>> His sister described him as the family’s bad seed, and this is a bad family already. >> I’m going to try to have no trouble with you, man. >> Oh, man, whatever. >> John has just been released from several years of juvenile detention on weapons charges. >> John Lewis is a very dangerous man. >> The tension eases when he takes an immediate shine to Robin’s friend, Eileen Huber, and there’s a mutual [music] attraction.

Unlike the others, she’s been raised by strict parents. >> In part because she was so sheltered, she was attracted to very tough, aggressive men. >> There’s another reason he becomes the bad boy for her. >> We know that there was a lot of arguments in Eileen’s household growing up. John became the boyfriend that she knew would most aggravate her [music] parents as part of her own young rebellion.

>> The four soon start living together and risk gang retribution by forming a discreet pact. Together, they are going to bring terror to the streets. >> There’s a perfect storm in the household. We have the two men competing to show who can be more powerful or more cocky or more arrogant or more successful as a gangster.

>> The thug lifestyle sucks Aileen in. >> Aileen’s psyche had a significant split. She could at sometimes experience the innocent Valley girl. On the other hand, she was drawn to these bad boys, these gang members. >> Aileen threw her whole identity into John. What John said, Aileen did. Aileen did it without question.

 He’s clearly mesmerized this young girl. >> And right now, her new boyfriend wants some more guns. An opportunity for Aileen to prove she can be bad, too. >> to do with this. This can’t This isn’t going to work for us anymore. >> He’s breaking into my dad’s house. >> He’s got [snorts] shotguns, handguns. [music] >> All right.

>> He’s got a lot. >> Okay. >> He’s got ammunition. He’s got everything. >> That’s what I’m talking about right there. Her dad’s got a gun. >> Her father is a gun collector and is heading out of town. >> [music] >> can come in and take it. >> Look at that cabinet, though. That’s what I’m talking about.

 All right, there. That’s how you do it. She got >> She leaves a window unlocked at his home ready for the boys to sneak in. Aileen’s tip earns their respect. >> Aileen knew that she wasn’t cut from the same cloth as John or Vincent or Robin. She brought guns >> [music] >> as a way of proving herself to this group, that she could belong and that she deserved to be there.

>> With their new arsenal, the vicious clan is itching to get back in the business of bringing murder and mayhem to the city’s streets. In the Southern California city of West Covina, two pairs of twisted lovers hell-bent on robbing and killing are anxious to try out the mini arsenal of weapons they just stole.

>> 40-year-old janitor Willie Sams has spent the weekend celebrating his daughter’s wedding. His happiness is short-lived. >> You give me all your money. >> Hurry up, man. >> Now, you drive. Get in the car. >> Come on, man. Come on. >> Get in the car right now. Drive. >> John Lewis and Vincent Hubbard force him to drive to an out-of-site dumpster.

>> He knows, right then and there, that he’s going to die. >> You said if I did everything you asked, you’d let me go. PLEASE. >> PLEASE. >> THERE WAS A REPORT OF SHOTS FIRED IN THE AREA OF Edgewood Middle School in West Covina. So, patrol units responded to the school. They didn’t find anybody there at the school, started checking around the area, and found [music] Mr.

 Sams in a dumpster. I’m sure Mr. Sams knew that that was his last act that he was going to do is climb into that dumpster and that he wasn’t going to climb out. >> Investigators find evidence suggesting the killers have struck before. In the same dumpster, they find the stolen credit cards of Augustine Ramirez. >> So, with one murder victim’s property being recovered near where now we’ve got another murder, that’s highly unusual.

You start working backwards, trying to piece together what his last moments alive were like. What he was doing, where he was going. Contacted his family, his wife. He had intended to go to the bank to withdraw money. So, we knew that that was the last place he was seen. >> It’s the same location Juan Rios and Sonia Aguirre were abducted from four days earlier. But, they were let go.

>> The fact that they’re going over and over again to the same areas suggests that the killers, as they progress through their crimes, they get bolder and bolder and bolder. >> It’s 1991. The speed of technology is slowing down the police’s ability to connect all the cases. >> You’ve got robbery detectives that are investigating the robbery of Sonia Aguirre and Mr. Rios.

And then you have homicide detectives investigating the murder of Augie Ramirez. And then [music] with the same crease in the crime rate, sheriff’s homicide were called in to handle the Willie Sams case. >> That’s it. >> Meanwhile, the murderous thieves go on a spending spree. >> Okay, that is $708. >> When Vincent and Robin attempt to use Willie Sams’ stolen credit card to add a little swag to their style, >> I understand.

>> there’s a problem. >> I’m sorry, your card was declined. >> The clerk is suspicious. >> The store clerk has the presence of mind to get a license plate number. >> We had a description of two of the suspects. We had a description of the vehicle, and we had a registered address. >> The car is registered to Eileen Huber at her parents address in gang-infested Baldwin Park.

They’ve no idea she’s moved out and is shacked up with her murderous lover, John Lewis. Now, the gang grows bolder. Six weeks after the first murder, Elizabeth Nisbet, a medical center receptionist, and her husband are out shopping in the afternoon at a busy mall on the outskirts of West Covina. They’ve arranged to meet up at their car.

>> Get in the car. >> [screaming] >> GET IN THE CAR, NOW. GET BACK. SHUT UP. GIVE ME YOUR WALLET. GET BACK. SHUT UP. Who do you think you are, huh? >> [crying] >> Good girl gone bad, Eileen Huber, follows in a trail car. >> They get onto the freeway. She’s in the back seat being yelled at by Hubbard. >> SHUT THE HELL >> [screaming] >> UP.

>> MEANWHILE, Elizabeth’s husband is confused. >> He comes out of the mall. His car is gone. His wife is gone. >> When he >> determined that she absolutely wasn’t there, he went inside and notified mall security. >> An all-points bulletin is issued to find Elizabeth and her car. Can police find her in time? Police in Southern California are in a desperate race against time to find Elizabeth Nisbet.

>> Get in the back of the car. >> She’s been abducted in her own car, right outside a popular mall. John Lewis, Vincent Hubbard, and Robin Machuca terrorize their helpless victim into revealing her ATM PIN numbers. They get to a point where they pull over on the side of the road. This is in broad daylight, right around the lunch hour.

>> [screaming] >> They shoot her again, again, and again. >> Vincent knew what motivated John, and he tried to hang back and let John do the killings because he knew this is something that John was perversely interested in. >> Elizabeth had been studying to become a nurse and was looking forward to her daughter’s wedding.

>> She was sitting in the car waiting for me, and I come out 10 minutes later and she was gone. And that’s 30 years of my life gone in in 10 minutes. >> They leave the car there right at the side of the road, not too far from our newsroom, and they take off. >> The killers escape in a backup vehicle owned by fourth member Eileen Huber and drive around draining Elizabeth’s bank account at several ATMs.

>> [music] >> Hours after her kidnapping, a police officer spots her car. >> 211, got a suspicious item. >> She died of multiple gunshot wounds, and it appeared that she had been shot at least three times. >> A search of her car offers a familiar clue. >> We found a crumpled up ATM receipt that showed money was taken out of the account about an hour or so after the victim was reported missing.

>> In 1991, surveillance cameras at ATMs are just being installed. >> [music] >> When we viewed the ATM tapes, we saw in one of the early frames the victim’s vehicle [music] driving through the parking lot. About 2 minutes later, the photographs show a male and female >> It’s John Lewis and Robin Machuca using Elizabeth’s card.

90 minutes later, after she’s been killed, someone else is using her card at the same machine. It’s good girl gone bad, Eileen Huber. The ballistics report ties the latest outrage in with the earlier murders. The popular location where Elizabeth was abducted makes the murders front-page news. >> They were escalating and we were going to lose more citizens.

 There was nobody that felt safe at all. >> In broad daylight, they return 3 days later to the same mall where they abducted Elizabeth Nisbet. This time, the girls fill in for Vincent, who remains behind nursing a sore leg. >> Get her on the phone. >> Shirley Denagee is terrorized, robbed, tormented, and cold-bloodedly executed.

>> Around midnight, I drove down to the LA County Morgue and physically looked and identified her. And then after that, I just drove myself back home quietly, thinking, rethinking how am I going to start telling the rest of the family? >> It’s at this point is that everything comes together. You now have two killings that happened from the same mall.

And all hell breaks loose. Not only in the media, but as far as the cops go. The cops are now determined to put an end to this, because it’s not just one everyday person, now it’s two everyday people and maybe more. >> Police form a task force to track down the killers. >> And we’ve got multiple teams of homicide detectives for each of the murders that had occurred.

>> A West Covina officer back from patrol recognizes the faces in the ATM photos and knows where the gang lives. >> I was able to identify the the photographs, not by name, but by uh placing them at that apartment, in that car, and things kind of transpired from there. >> All this time, the killers have been hiding out nearby.

The apartment is located two blocks from where two of the kidnappings [music] took place. >> That was huge. That was a a very big break. That got really everybody scrambling. >> A surveillance team sets up outside the apartment. One member of the gang leaves. It’s Eileen Huber. >> There she goes. >> They follow her and when she stops at a restaurant, officers make their move.

>> POLICE, SHOW YOUR HANDS! SHOW your hands! Turn around and interlace your fingers on the back of your head. Do it now. >> Aileen is taken in for questioning and talks about Shirley Denegen’s abduction. >> Tell her she’s going to be all right. Just cooperate and she’ll be all right. >> She starts talking and she didn’t really stop talking until everybody was done talking to her.

>> I just want to go home. They didn’t have the cars. I want to go home. >> Aileen admits she and her roommates are the sadistic killers police have been hunting and her boyfriend John Lewis is leading the way. >> Then John got out of the car with the the gun in his hand. >> And you heard first shot. And were Were like the shots bam bam bam? Like that? >> Investigators see hard evidence of her involvement.

>> She says it’s her engagement ring from John. When the cops look at it, they realize it’s the first mall victim’s wedding ring. >> Aileen had this fantasy that she and John could go away and be a happy couple. She, without regard for its source, [music] wore the ring of the victim thinking it was her own fantasy, her own wedding ring.

>> Dreams of a honeymoon are now permanently over. With Aileen behind bars, the attention is turned to bringing in the rest of the murderous gang. But at this point, the fugitives know the police are closing in. >> John saw on TV that they had figured out that the two mall murders were linked. They knew the cops were coming to get them.

>> Lewis wants to go out in a blaze of infamy. >> Well, I’m going to shoot it out with the police and I’ll go down as like a folklore hero. I’m the guy that robbed and murdered and and that’s how I wanted to be remembered. >> Always slept with a gun. And sometimes he slept with two guns. >> Eileen tells police [music] Robin’s 6-year-old daughter lives at the apartment and confirms the remaining trio has plenty of weapons inside.

A SWAT team is assembled and ready to strike. >> This is the most dangerous scenario the police can enter. These are stone-cold killers. >> Police department, get out of the >> Police department, get out of >> A SWAT team sneaks into an apartment building in West Covina, California, hoping to arrest three killers.

 The suspects are known to have numerous guns and have talked of going out in a blaze of glory. >> POLICE DEPARTMENT, GET OUT OF THE HOUSE NOW. >> POLICE DEPARTMENT, GET OUT OF >> THE raid catches the three remaining suspects asleep and off guard. They are arrested without incident. Robin’s daughter is led to safety.

John Lewis, his step sister Robin Machuca, and her boyfriend Vincent Hubbard are taken away for questioning. Just like Lewis’s girlfriend Eileen Huber, who was arrested hours earlier. >> When they take a look at this house, it’s stacked with guns. >> Inside the killers’ lair, police find disturbing evidence of their murderous rampage.

 A series of photos showing the brazen team holding the tools of their trade. There is even a picture of an unknown child with one of the guns used to slaughter their victims. >> I don’t think I’ll come. I know it. >> John Lewis, Vincent Hubbard, Robin Mechuca, and Eileen Huber face numerous charges including conspiracy, [music] kidnapping, robbery, and murder.

John Lewis recounts the moment he ended Shirley Dinnigen’s life. >> [screaming] >> I think the only reason he confessed to the offenses that he did was he wanted to take credit for him. He felt that he was proud of what he did. >> Lewis tells investigators once the killing started, he couldn’t stop. >> He really enjoyed killing.

 He said the first time you do it, the first time you look in someone’s eyes, it’s like it’s too quick. It’s something that you have to experience again. And to him it was something that he couldn’t get enough of. >> Willie looked a lot like his abusing stepfather. And that’s what he saw in him when he killed him.

 Well, that’s how he even confessed to it. He says, “When I was looking at him, I saw my stepfather. All I wanted to do was kill him.” >> John Lewis was a cold-blooded murderer. If he targeted you, you were dead. He never intended to let anyone go. The only thing that life taught him was to rob and not to keep witnesses around. >> The prosecution tells the jury everyone on the team played a role in the robberies and murders.

>> Hubbard was the muscle. He was the frightening individual that could intimidate and have the victims just not fight back. >> Robin McChuga and Aileen Wuornos’ defense teams [music] attempt to distance them from the killings. But the prosecution says they were just as bad as their lovers. >> Aileen, Robin were cheerleaders in this.

They were happy to share in the proceeds, happy to help out in any way they could. Without her and Aileen, these murders couldn’t have happened the way they did. >> The four are charged with 27 felony counts. John Lewis receives the harshest penalty, a death sentence. >> Lewis got what he deserved.

 He was the killer in in every instance.
