Girl Waves At Cop Everyday—The Day She Doesn’t His Gut Tells Him To Check Her House

A Guardian Angel in Blue: The Girl Who Waved to a Cop Everyday
Growing up in Kansas City, Missouri, in the 1990s, life was anything but easy for Klynn Scales. Living with her mother and two brothers, her family constantly struggled just to make ends meet. They lived in a tough neighborhood where violence was an everyday norm and drugs were regularly sold on the streets. Money was a constant problem; bills piled up, and keeping food on the table was hit or miss. There were many nights when nine-year-old Klynn had to go to bed hungry.
To make matters worse, her exhausted mother eventually turned to drugs, bringing the very violence they had tried so hard to avoid right into their home. Klynn was forced to step up and become the caregiver for her younger brothers, even resorting to stealing food from a local 7-Eleven just so they wouldn’t starve.
Despite the despair, Klynn found solace in an unexpected person. Officer Jeff Colvin, who patrolled their high-crime neighborhood, had to stay hyper-alert during his shifts. One day, he noticed a young girl and smiled at her. Her eyes lit up, and she waved back. Over the next few weeks, this simple gesture evolved into a daily routine. Klynn and Officer Colvin would meet at the same spot; she would smile, and he would wave. They eventually began talking about her day, as well as her dreams and goals. For Klynn, he became a role model and the one person she could truly count on. However, she kept the dark reality of her home life a secret from him.
One sunny afternoon, Officer Colvin arrived at their usual spot, but Klynn wasn’t there. She had never missed their routine greeting, and he immediately knew something was terribly wrong. Having previously followed her to make sure she got home safely, he knew exactly where she lived and decided to check on her.
When he knocked on her door and got no answer, he heard a moan and movement inside. Trusting his gut feeling that something was terribly wrong, he made his way in and found Klynn lying on the floor, pale and shivering. She was severely sick. Colvin immediately called an ambulance. At the hospital, doctors diagnosed her with severe malnutrition, noting that she wouldn’t have survived another day without treatment. Officer Colvin had saved her life.
Klynn eventually moved out of the area, but as the years passed, she never forgot the incredible kindness of the man who gave her a second chance at life. “Through all the bad situations, I would just picture him saying that he was there for us, and if we ever needed him, he would be right there,” she later recalled.
Twenty years later, Klynn decided she had to find her hero to thank him in person. Having forgotten his name, she logged onto Facebook and reached out to the Kansas City Police Department’s page. Sergeant Jennifer Jones answered her message and managed to track down Officer Colvin.
When Colvin received the email about a woman claiming to be the little girl he had helped two decades ago, he was shocked. He had often wondered what had happened to her. When they finally reconnected, the reunion was overwhelmingly emotional. Colvin admitted that police officers often go through their entire careers wondering if they ever truly helped anyone, or if they even chose the right career path. Klynn proved to him that he had.
Thanks to Colvin’s intervention, Klynn had been able to turn her life around, get her brothers away from their drug-addicted mother, and build a good life for herself. Inspired by her childhood hero, she was even planning to become a police officer herself to make the same impact on others.
After Klynn shared her story on social media, it quickly went viral. “Jeff Colvin is not just a hero to me, but my guardian angel,” Klynn shared. “I want him and every police officer to know that what you do, no matter how big or small, can make a positive impact in someone’s life, like it did mine.”
