Incest Siblings Murder Their Kids To Hide Their Secret

Shadows in Shiregreen: Systemic Blind Spots, a Dark Family Secret, and the Tragically Brief Lives of Tristan and Blake Barrass

In the quiet suburb of Shiregreen in Sheffield, England, fourteen-year-old Tristan and thirteen-year-old Blake Barrass were known as polite, kind-hearted boys who brought warmth to their local neighborhood. Tristan, despite struggling with severe anxiety and bullying, possessed a deep capacity for empathy; when a close friend was diagnosed with bone cancer, he proudly dyed his hair bright yellow to raise money for charity. His older brother, Blake, was a gregarious football enthusiast with a reputation for comforting those in distress, despite navigating his own challenges with ADHD. Yet, beneath the veneer of their seemingly normal, albeit chaotic, household on Greg House Road lay a web of generational trauma, systemic oversights, and a chilling domestic secret that would ultimately cost the boys their lives.

The Public Illusion and the Incestuous Core

For years, the boys’ mother, Sarah Barrass, maintained a carefully constructed narrative regarding her children’s lineage, telling both community members and her offspring that their father had passed away. In reality, the father of all six of her children was her own half-brother, Brandon Machin. To the outside world, and even to the children themselves, Machin was introduced simply as a supportive uncle who frequently assisted the family. Psychologists and investigators would later describe Machin as an intensely submissive figure who would execute any task Sarah demanded of her, no matter how extreme.

This toxic alliance did not emerge in a vacuum. Both Sarah and Brandon had grown up in a deeply dysfunctional environment, born to a mother who had eight children with four different men. After a brief period in the foster care system, they were returned to a household devoid of structure or supervision, where substance abuse was rampant.

According to Sarah’s brother, Martin, the sibling duo exhibited severe antisocial behaviors and sadistic tendencies from early childhood, frequently delighting in animal cruelty and unprovoked violence against peers. Martin recalled:

“Those two have been evil since birth. They are both as bad as each other… I witnessed Brandon’s violence years ago, and I knew something wasn’t right. I called social services and asked them to look into it.”

Systemic Blind Spots and the Failure to Intervene

Despite multiple formal complaints filed by Martin between 2009 and 2010 warning of domestic physical abuse, local child protective agencies failed to detect the deeper rot within the household. Social services were heavily involved with the Barrass family, particularly because four of the six children had special developmental needs. However, case workers consistently assessed Sarah as a competent, dedicated mother who was simply overwhelmed by her parenting duties. They remained entirely oblivious to the incestuous nature of her relationship with Machin, nor did they suspect any immediate physical danger to the minors.

The household dynamics began to fracture rapidly in 2018 when behavioral issues surfaced among the children. Blake was accused of engaging in inappropriate boundary-violating behavior with another child, leading to intensive social work intervention. While Blake responded well to therapy, the scrutiny placed immense pressure on Sarah. Fearing that her children would be removed by the state—and that her taboo relationship with her half-brother would be exposed—Sarah’s mental state degenerated into homicidal ideation. This psychological descent was documented in disturbing text messages to friends and cryptic social media posts, where she quoted Stephen King: “Murder is like potato chips: you can’t stop with just one.”

The Catalyst and the Execution of a Familicide

The tipping point arrived in late May 2019. Following a private meeting between social workers and the children, Sarah was aggressively questioned regarding the identity of the children’s father and suspected sexual abuse within the home. The final blow came on May 23, when a telephone caller accused fourteen-year-old Tristan of similar misconduct and threatened to involve the police.

Confronted with the imminent collapse of her carefully guarded secrets, Sarah, in collusion with Brandon, chose a scorched-earth path of familicide. They reasoned that killing the children was a “kinder” alternative to having them placed in state custody.

On the night of May 23, Sarah gathered her four eldest children and forced them to ingest a massive cocktail of prescription medications, hoping they would die of an overdose overnight. When the children merely became severely ill but survived the poisoning, Sarah panicked. Early the next morning, she summoned Machin to the residence via taxi to assist in finalizing the murders.

Together, the two parents entered the bedroom and brutally strangled Tristan and Blake. Sarah utilized the belt of her bathrobe while Machin used his bare hands. In a heartbreaking attempt to protect his brother, Blake’s final words to his younger siblings were, “Mom is killing Tristan,” before Machin descended upon him. To ensure the boys were dead, the couple tied plastic trash bags over their heads.

Following the murders, Machin calmly consumed an energy drink while Sarah attempted to drown one of her remaining younger children in the bathtub. The child resisted fiercely, screaming, “Why are you trying to kill us?” Unable to complete the act, and overwhelmed by mounting panic, Sarah finally dialed emergency services herself.

Retribution, Grief, and Demolition

When law enforcement arrived at the scene, Sarah attempted to divert suspicion, falsely claiming that Tristan and Blake were visiting friends. However, one of the surviving children silently gestured to an officer, running a finger across their throat to communicate that their brothers were dead. Police discovered the lifeless bodies of the two teenagers in their bunk beds.

The subsequent trial laid bare the horrific reality of the household. While Sarah initially tried to minimize her involvement, Brandon Machin confessed to the details of the crime, chillingly noting that he began strangling Blake because he got “that feeling when you just want to strangle the life out of someone.”

Both defendants ultimately pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder, two counts of first-degree murder, and four counts of attempted murder. Mr. Justice Jeremy Richardson, presiding over the sentencing, did not mince words:

“No words of mine can ever fully reflect the enormity of what you have both done. The crimes you have committed quite frankly speak for themselves… the murder of two children, the attempted murder of four children, and the overarching conspiracy to murder.”

Both Sarah Barrass and Brandon Machin were sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 35 years.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Shiregreen community rallied to support the surviving children, raising thousands of pounds to secure their financial future, while local motorcyclists organized a massive honorary procession for Tristan and Blake’s funeral.

To prevent the house on Greg House Road from remaining a permanent, agonizing reminder of the trauma, the property was completely demolished in February 2021. In its place, local authorities established a green memorial space centered around a single tree, offering a quiet sanctuary to honor the memories of two young boys whose lives were tragically cut short by the very people sworn to protect them.
