UNBELIEVABLE: Even the Judge Couldn’t Hold Back Outrage After this Crime

I sat with the grandfather of Halia Colbertson. His emotions raw, his pain real, devastated by the loss of his granddaughter.  his 17-year-old granddaughter, Halia Colbertson, snatched away in an instant. >> She loved life and um everybody was her new best friend. The teen losing her life in March of last year here outside of this Northland convenience store.  Today we’re breaking down a case where a friendship that had already fallen apart ended in a heartbreaking tragedy.

 One that changed the lives of two families forever. At the center of this story are Briana Barzini and Halia Colulbertson. Briana was from Westerville, a small town in Ohio. She was 18 years old, a student at Columbus State University, and had no prior criminal record. Halia Colulbertson, the other young woman involved, was just 17.

 The events unfolded on March 26th, 2023, making this a relatively recent case. While reports consistently state that Briana and Harley knew each other, there’s some disagreement about how close they once were. Some describe them as former close friends, while others say they simply shared mutual friends and crossed paths from time to time.

 What everyone does agree on is this. A disagreement that might have seemed like just another teenage conflict escalated in a matter of minutes, forever altering the futures of two young women and leaving both families to live with the consequences. Here’s what happened on the night of March 26th, 2023. According to investigators, Briana fatally injured Halia during a confrontation outside a convenience store in their hometown.

 As mentioned earlier, the two had once been friends, but over time, their relationship had broken down and they drifted apart. That night, Briana walked into the convenience store, unaware that Halia was already inside. Before long, the two began talking. According to reports, the conversation quickly became heated and eventually turned into a physical confrontation.

 As tensions rose, a store employee escorted Halia outside. Instead of leaving, however, she remained in the parking lot, appearing to wait for Briana. The argument inside the store was captured by surveillance cameras, footage that investigators would later review as part of the case. A short time later, Briana exited the store alongside a man.

 As soon as she stepped into the parking lot, Haria approached and confronted her. According to the investigation, Halia threatened Briana, pushed her, and struck her while Briana continued backing away, repeatedly, indicating that she didn’t want to fight. But the situation continued to escalate. During the confrontation, Briana pulled out a knife and stabbed Halia once in the chest.

 Reports indicate that Halia didn’t immediately realize she had been seriously injured. It wasn’t until she noticed blood on her chest that she understood what had happened. And by [music] then, the confrontation was already over. At 11:48 p.m., Columbus police responded to reports of an injured person outside the convenience store.

 Officers identified the victim as 17-year-old Haria Colulbertson, who had suffered a stab wound to the chest. She was transported by police to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, Haria passed away at 12:24 a.m. the following morning at Riverside Health Medical Center in Ohio. An autopsy later confirmed that the stab wound to her chest was the cause of her death.

 One witness, Lewis Barnett, had been a customer inside the store that evening. Speaking with investigators, he described being stunned by what had happened. He said, “The lives of our youth are ending far too quickly.” Barnett also shared how unsettling the incident was, explaining that the convenience store was simply a place where people stopped to grab food along a busy avenue.

 In all the years he had known the area, he said he had never witnessed anything like it. Later that night, officers located Briana Barzini at her home. During her initial interview with investigators, she acknowledged that she had pointed a knife at Haria during the confrontation. She also told detectives that she had the knife with her and used it during the altercation.

 Following the investigation, Briana was formally charged in connection with the death of Haria Colulbertson. The court set her bail at $750,000 and imposed several conditions, including a prohibition on carrying weapons and any contact with the victim’s family. She was initially held in custody before later being released after posting bail.

 On March 28th, 2024, Briana Barzini appeared in court for her first hearing. During the proceedings, prosecutors presented surveillance footage from the convenience store, capturing both the beginning and the end of the confrontation that ultimately led to Halia Colulbertson’s death. Several witnesses who were at the scene identified Briana as the person who inflicted the fatal injury.

 By the time officers arrived, Briana had already left the area. The court also reviewed a cell phone video recorded by one of Haria’s friends outside the store. The footage shows the two young women arguing before Haria walks toward Briana and slaps her. >> Hey, get off my sister, bro. >> Get off.

 Get off my Hey, if you touch my sister, girl, I’m going have to put my phone down, bro. >> Halah, crunch her to get it over with, bro. Crunch her. Get it over with. Halia. >> As Halia pulls back after the slap, that’s the moment she appears to have been stabbed. The confrontation continued for several moments afterward. And when others finally separated them, the video shows the front of Harley’s shirt covered in blood.

 Briana’s attorney argued that the incident was the result of a fight that escalated beyond anyone’s expectations. He maintained that his client never intended for Haria to lose her life and that her actions were carried out in self-defense. Although Briana was initially charged with murder, prosecutors later agreed to the defense’s request to reduce the charge to manslaughter.

 That decision significantly changed the potential outcome of the case. Instead of facing a possible life sentence with parole eligibility after 15 years, Briana now faced a maximum sentence of 3 years in prison. Following negotiations, both sides reached a plea agreement. Briana pleaded guilty to manslaughter and prosecutors dismissed the original first-degree murder charge.

 The amended charge was formally presented in early June 2024, a development that surprised many people following the case. As the legal process unfolded, one question continued to dominate public discussion. Was this a tragic fight between two teenagers that spiraled out of control? Was it an intentional act? or was it a genuine case of self-defense? Had the case gone to trial, Briana’s legal team planned to argue that she acted to protect herself during the confrontation.

 Under Ohio law, when a defendant claims self-defense in an assault or homicide case, prosecutors carry the burden of proving that the actions were not legally justified. That wasn’t always the case. Before a change in state law in 2019, defendants were required to convince the jury that they had acted in self-defense. The law shifted that burden to the prosecution.

With that in mind, prosecutors relied in part on text messages Briana had sent to another person roughly one week before the incident. According to court records, those messages included a statement that she would cut Haria if she came near her again. Briana’s attorney asked the judge to exclude the messages from trial, arguing they had been sent days before the confrontation and should not be considered as evidence.

 Ultimately, Briana Barzini’s case was heard in Franklin County, Ohio. After accepting the plea agreement, the court sentenced her to 3 years in prison for the death of 17-year-old Haria Colulbertson. >> Do you understand the nature of the charge to which you’re pleading guilty and what the maximum penalties are? >> Yes, your honor.

 How is this a win? This is not a win. >> The family of Halia Colbertson not giving up what they call their fight for justice. They plan to be at Brianna Barazini’s court hearing pushing for that maximum sentence, hopeful to gain some sort of closure.  Before announcing the sentence, the judge allowed members of Haria’s family to speak for more than an hour. During their victim impact statements, they expressed their belief that Briana had intentionally taken Haria’s life and argued that the act had been planned. Throughout the proceedings, Briana remained composed, though visibly emotional.

 Because of the plea agreement, she already knew the sentence she would receive. Her defense emphasized that she had fully cooperated with investigators and had no previous criminal history. Before the sentence was officially imposed, Briana addressed the court. She acknowledged the pain her actions had caused and said she understood the lasting impact on Haley’s loved ones.

 She also stated that she would carry that guilt with her for the rest of her life. Under Ohio law, Briana may become eligible to request early release if she maintains good behavior while incarcerated. Any such request would be reviewed by a judge at the appropriate time. After the hearing concluded, Briana was taken into custody to begin serving her sentence.

 The impact of this case extended far beyond the courtroom. Haria’s family lost a daughter, while Briana’s family saw the life of a young woman with no previous criminal history change forever. In just a few minutes, two families found themselves facing consequences that will likely remain with them for years to come.

 Today, Briana Barzini is serving her sentence at a women’s correctional facility in Ohio. Cases like this leave difficult questions behind.
