What Happened After She Stopped for Gas Horrified the Nation | True Crime

She had only stopped at a gas station to buy her favorite drink and a bag of chips. Just minutes later, 19-year-old Anna Blanchard vanished without a trace. Soon, her vehicle was found abandoned dozens of miles from home. Inside, there was blood, a lot of blood. But Ana Yaya was nowhere to be found.

 Every new lead only made the case even more disturbing. Who was the mysterious man who was the last person to approach her? And why did the person investigators believe should never have been free end up crossing her path that very night? This is the story of Annie Blanchard. Friends, let me interrupt for just a minute.

Leave it in the comments and uh I’ll get right back to the story. 19-year-old Anna Blanchard grew up in Homewood, Alabama. She was born to Elijah Senior and Angela and shared an especially close bond with her brother, Elijah Jr.

 He was only 7 months older than she was and the two were best friends. Their father was a pastor and businessman. Even after he and Angela divorced in 2004, the family managed to maintain an incredibly warm and close relationship. Angela, who worked as a nurse, later married UFC heavyweight legend Walt Harris.

 Elijah Senior also remarried to Jefferson County probate judge Yoshiba. Everyone got along well and remained closely connected as one family. Anna Yaya and Elijah Jr. had been part of Walt’s life since they were three years old. He later said, “I never called them my stepson or my step-daughter. They were my children. That’s how I saw it.

 I loved them like my own.” According to Walt, Annie was his biggest source of support. After my wins, we’d celebrate together. And when I lost, she always knew exactly what to say to lift me up. She was my support, the voice that wouldn’t let me give up, he recalled. That was exactly who Ana Yaya was. Kind, thoughtful, and someone who always put other people first.

 Because Angela worked long shifts as a nurse, Anaya took on a major role as she got older, helping Walt care for her two younger siblings. She loved sports and showed great promise in both softball and cheerleading. When it came time to choose a career, she considered several different paths, including art, business, and even teaching.

 By the end of 2019, Anna was living in Auburn, Alabama, and attending Southern Union College. Her brother was studying just a few minutes away at Auburn University, so they still saw each other almost every day. She eventually decided to pursue a degree in early childhood education, dreaming of becoming a teacher.

 Annie shared an apartment with her roommate Sarah and adopted a puppy from a shelter, naming him Blue. Balancing school, work, and a new independent life wasn’t easy, but she embraced every change and genuinely love this new chapter. On October 23rd, 2019, Anaya and Elijah Jr. traveled from Hamilton to Orville to attend a funeral. The drive was about 180 mi, so as soon as the service ended, Annawi wanted to head back as quickly as possible.

 They still had a 4-hour drive home, and both of them had to work the following day. About halfway home, they passed through Birmingham and decided to stop by and see Walt, who was training for his next fight. Walt offered to let them stay the night. He could tell Anya was exhausted, but she replied, “No, Dad. I’m okay.

I’ll make it home.” She hugged him goodbye and got back on the road. At around 11:00 that night, Elijah Jr. and Ananiah arrived back in Auburn. She dropped her brother off at home, and he asked her to call him once she made it back to her apartment. It was only 3 miles from his place to hers. “You could tell she was tired behind the wheel.

 I told her to go straight home because we both had to be up early the next morning. He later recalled, “It had been an exhausting day in every way. So, as soon as Elijah Jr. got inside, he fell asleep.” At 11:09 p.m., Sarah texted Ana, “Are you almost home?” Anna replied right away, “Yeah.” Sarah and Anna shared their phone locations with each other.

 And uh although it’s a fear many people can relate to, Sarah said Ana Yaya had a deep fear of being kidnapped or murdered. Every night before bed, she checked every room, made sure the doors were locked multiple times, and often had nightmares about something terrible happening to her. She almost never went anywhere alone, especially at night.

About 30 minutes passed after their last conversation, and Sarah messaged Annie again on Snapchat. Did you seriously go somewhere without me? About a minute later, reply came back. Smoking a blunt lol. Sarah was stunned. She had never heard Anti talk like that before. The word blunt especially struck her as strange.

 Who are you smoking with? Sarah asked. Eric. I just met him. Where? There was no reply. It was almost midnight. Sarah checked Ana Yaya’s location one last time. Her phone showed that she was at a nearby apartment complex where most of the residents were college students. Sarah assumed Anaya had unexpectedly decided to spend the evening with friends and she went to bed. The next morning, Elijah Jr.

 woke up and realized he had no missed calls from his sister, even though he had expected her to call after getting home. At 8:00 that morning, Angela tried to reach Ania on FaceTime, but she didn’t answer. Sarah ran into Ania’s room expecting to hear all about the unexpected night out and the mysterious Eric, but the room was empty and looked as though no one had been there.

 It appeared that Ana’s phone had either been turned off or she had stopped sharing her location. Sarah told Elijah Jr. that Ana had apparently never made it home, then mentioned the name Eric. “My heart just dropped,” he later recalled. He was certain that if his sister had really planned to go meet a stranger, she would have told him.

Together, they spoke with a local woman named Karina, for whom Anniel worked as a babysitter. There was no doubt about it. She would never have missed work without letting someone know in advance. But that was exactly what happened. While Sarah drove around town searching for Ania’s vehicle, her family had to make the call they had been dreading.

19-year-old Annie Blanchard was officially reported missing. Walter and Angela immediately got on the road. You can only imagine how endlessly long those two hours must have felt. At first, investigators said they had no evidence of a violent crime. But this behavior was completely out of character for Anna.

 No one believed she would simply disappear without saying a word. 48 hours later, her black Honda SUV was found near Parkplace Apartments in Montgomery, Alabama, about 55 miles from her home. The vehicle was badly scratched and dented. But what was even more alarming was the large amount of blood investigators found inside. Because of where the vehicle had been found, the search now focused on Auburn, Montgomery, and the nearly 60-mi stretch between them.

 It was a massive area that had to be searched thoroughly. >> Anniah’s hometown of Homewood has not stopped in their efforts to raise awareness for Annayia. The senior pastor here at Trinity United Methodist says Annayia’s mother and stepfather are in need of prayers right now as their strength is being challenged. >> Five days passed, but no new leads emerged.

 Family members, friends, and members of the community gathered for a candlelight vigil and prayer service, hoping for at least some answers. Around 200 people also came to the church. Annie had once attended in her hometown. Karina, the woman Ania worked for as a babysitter, said she tried to be as honest as possible with her three young children.

 She told them that Ania was missing, but that so many people were looking for her and everyone hoped she would come home soon. Later, Karina noticed the children using their tablets to look up how many houses there were in the county. Why are you looking that up? She asked. We need to know how many houses we’ll have to check to find her, the children replied.

 As the search entered its second week, investigators had already received hundreds of tips from the public, and the reward for information leading to a breakthrough in the case had grown to $15,000. Even UFC President Dana White made a donation to support Walt and Angela. Uh, a special task force of 70 personnel from multiple agencies including the FBI, the US Marshalss, and Homeland Security was assigned to the investigation.

They all worked together in the effort to find Anya. During a more detailed examination of her vehicle, forensic investigators determined that the largest amount of blood was on the front passenger seat. They also discovered a bullet hole in the passenger side door. Testing confirmed that the blood belonged to Ananiah and law enforcement stated that the amount of blood indicated she had suffered a lifethreatening injury.

 Her father, Elijah Senior, said that as a man of deep faith, he could not accept those conclusions. Despite everything pointing toward the worst possible outcome, he never stopped believing that one day his daughter would come home. >> What they’re telling us is that they they know that she was harmed in the car.

 Blanchard’s parents even meeting with the mother of Natalie Holloway who vanished on a high school graduation trip to Aruba in 2005 and has never been found. >> That’s my baby girl. So, I’m a fighter by nature. Um, it’s not just my profession. I’ve been battling all my life and I’m not going to stop battling for her right now. >> Walt described that time as a dark abyss that clings to you and refuses to let go.

 A constant feeling of unbearable weight that you have to fight every single minute. Investigators were able to trace the movements of Ania’s vehicle through license plate readers. They discovered that her black Honda SUV had stopped at a Chevron gas station in Auburn, just a few minutes from her apartment. Anna arrived at the gas station shortly before 11:30 p.m.

 and stayed for only a few minutes. She bought a bag of sour cream flavored chips and a drink, her favorite flavor. As Angela later recalled >> tonight, the search is intensifying for 19-year-old Annayia Blanchard. This surveillance video shows the last time she was seen more than a week ago late at night inside this Auburn convenience store.

 Police found her car 2 days later damaged and parked in an apartment complex in Montgomery. >> There’s about 50 mi between Auburn and Montgomery. And so we’re looking at that that area specifically as as the critical area where something took place. Police say evidence inside her car points to foul play. >> I love her so much and I I want her back so bad.

 Um, and so I’m going to hold out hope. >> Annayia’s father says watching the surveillance video, something about his daughter seemed off. >> It was almost like somebody told her to do something. >> What was so unusual about her body language? >> She was kind of just She looked kind of distant. Alabama officials are offering more than $100,000 reward for any information in Annayia’s case, thanks in large part to an outpouring of donations from the UFC community.

>> It’s overwhelming to see them come up and uh you know the mayor, I mean the governor, excuse me, K Ivy um thank you for proving the reward. And um >> tonight, blue ribbons dot mailboxes around Annayia’s hometown in Alabama as nearly a dozen agencies from local police to the FBI work to bring her home. >> That’s our main goal.

 We have to find Annayia. We want her back. We want her back. >> Well, Jose, the chief tells me that police here in Auburn are investigating a number of possibilities, including that Annayia possibly met up with somebody that she met online. >> Then a witness came forward. One man told investigators he had seen an unknown man apparently forcing Annie into her Honda in the parking lot of the Chevron gas station.

 After that, they drove away from the scene. The witness later told detectives that he hadn’t called for help because the woman who was with him advised him not to get involved. That information allowed police to narrow their focus to a specific person of interest. A man matching the same description had also been seen inside the chevron shortly before Ania disappeared.

 He was described as a black man, approximately 28 to 30 years old, weighing about 200 lb, and standing between 5’8 in and 5′ 10 in tall. He was wearing dark pants, dark shoes, and a camouflage Vans hoodie. He had arrived in the area driving a silver or gray early 2000s Lincolntown car. According to investigators, he did not arrive at the Chevron with Anna A.

 Surveillance footage showed him glancing in her direction while purchasing alcohol. Everything indicated that the two had never met before. After leaving in Ananiah’s vehicle, the SUV stopped at another gas station where the man bought a cigar. During the next hour, the vehicle disappeared from the automatic license plate reader system.

 It wasn’t seen again until it was traveling toward Montgomery. It didn’t take Auburn police long to identify the man. He quickly became the primary suspect in the case. It wasn’t Eric. It was 29-year-old Ibrahim Yazid, a man with a long and extremely violent criminal history who was well known to law enforcement.

 At the time he was living in a motel just a few miles from where Ania lived. Back in 2012, Ibrahim Yazid had attempted to kill two police officers. In 2017, he was arrested for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Then in January 2019, he robbed and brutally beat two men at a hotel in Montgomery.

 One of the victims was 77 years old. After the attack, the elderly man lost consciousness and nearly died. Ibrahim Yazid had been charged with kidnapping, attempted murder, and robbery. But despite the seriousness of those crimes, he was released after posting bond. In Ania’s case, uh, authorities obtained a warrant for his arrest.

 By that point, the investigation had officially been reclassified as a kidnapping case. >> We begin tonight with breaking news in the search for 19-year-old Anniah Blanchard. The 19-year-old Alabama college student missing now for more than two weeks. >> He should be considered dangerous and would be potentially armed. >> There is currently a manhunt going on right now to track him down.

 Police tell us there’s a warrant out for the arrest of 30-year-old Ibrahim Yazid of Montgomery. The charge, first-degree kidnapping. According to investigators, Yazid was at the same convenience store where Annayiah Blanchard was last seen on October 23rd. These are surveillance videos from a Chevron on South College Street in Auburn.

 Police shared that with us yesterday. They tell us they believe Ibrahim Yazi took Annayia against her will. You may recall her car was found at a Montgomery apartment complex on October 25th. That is 2 days after Annayia was last seen. There was damage on the front right passenger side of the car. Police say evidence inside Annia’s vehicle gave them reason to believe that Annayia may have been a victim of foul play.

>> Yazid is currently out on bond for charges of kidnapping and attempted murder from a previous case in another jurisdiction. >> Again, police are still looking for this man. Crimestoppers is offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction. Anyone who sees him is asked to call 911.

>> US Marshalss tracked Ibrahim Yazid to Escambia County, Florida. He was hiding in the woods and had no intention of surrendering peacefully. He actively resisted arrest, but officers ultimately took him into custody. Ibrahim Yazid was then extradited back to Alabama where he was charged with first-degree kidnapping.

 Despite his arrest, he refused to cooperate with investigators and said nothing about Anna’s whereabouts. She was still considered a missing person. During one of the court hearings, Ibrahim Yazid was brought into the courtroom. As he took his seat, he kept his eyes locked on Walt and Angela. Walt later recalled that Ibrahim Yazid appeared so confident and defiant that it took everything he had not to jump over the courtroom barrier and attack him.

I don’t even know if I can say it on national television to be honest. But if he’s listening, if he’s somehow watching this, please tell the authorities where my daughter is. Please. >> We’re still looking for Annayia and that’s what we want is to find her. We need help finding her because we don’t know.

 We have no information about where she is. And that’s the most important thing to us right now is getting her home. Um, a Lee County judge ordered that Ibrahim Yazid be held without bond. The court also ordered him to provide a DNA sample for forensic testing. While investigators were analyzing his DNA, the case took another turn with a second arrest.

 Law enforcement took 35-year-old Antoine Fischer into custody, charging him with first-degree kidnapping as well. Um, according to investigators, he provided transportation for Ibrahim and helped conceal evidence after the crime. Antoine Fiser was also well known to police and had a lengthy criminal record. In 2007, he pleaded guilty to felony murder.

 The court sentenced him under what is known as a split sentence. He served three years in prison while the remaining 17 years of his sentence were suspended. >> New this morning, it has been more than three weeks since Homewood native Anniia Blanchard was reported missing from the Auburn area. Even with the suspect now in custody, her family has never given up hope that she would be brought home safely.

 And joining me now live in Studio 42 is Annayia’s father, Elijah Blanchard, and his wife, her stepmother. Thank you so much for being here this morning. One of the most recent developments was the volunteer group Tequ Texas Equis Search calling off their search. Talk to us about your reaction to hearing that that portion of the search would be called off.

>> We we kindly were figuring that because I don’t think they had a specific area that they wanted to search in. >> So that’s what you know once that pulled out we you know but we have full confidence that the Auburn Police Department is going to do their efforts to make sure everything goes good. >> Yesterday uh afternoon on Dr.

 Phil, Annayia’s mother and stepfather said they do not believe that this was random, that they believe this may have been premeditated. How do you all feel about that? Do you agree? >> If I you want me to. Um, our contention is that this was something random. Um, basically by seeing the photos from the car being damaged, we initially start get, you know, coming up with different scenarios as far as what could have possibly happened.

 And um, you know, like I said again, it’s random and we initially stated that, you know, we thought that it was a carjacking. And so that has always been our position. >> Chief Register and his team are very, you know, very good. They they call me every day. They send random texts, let me know, you know, what’s going on with the case.

 They’ve been really good with uh communicating with us. I have no problem with their what they’re doing. Um they’re strictly professional. Um but they don’t want to give us anything that’s going to be damaged or anything like that. So, but they are communicating with us daily. >> All right, Mr. and Mrs. Blanchard, we thank you so much for coming in again this morning.

And we’ll be right back. >> Investigators were getting closer and closer to solving the case, but at the same time, they understood that the chances of finding Annie alive were extremely slim. Eventually, Antoine Fischer agreed to cooperate with investigators and told them where they could find Anya.

 A few days later, on November 25th, just over a month after she disappeared, human remains were discovered in a wooded area behind a church in Mon County. Scattered clothing was found nearby along with a single shoe. District Attorney Brandon Hughes photographed the shoe and asked Angela and Walt to come to the police department.

 Walt took one look at the photo, silently walked out of the room, and then began screaming as he punched the wall. He recognized the shoes immediately. He had bought them for Anya during a trip they had taken together to New York. Brandon Hughes later admitted that he had seen many horrific things throughout his career, but even sometime later, whenever he remembered how completely the news had broken Walt, he couldn’t hold back his tears.

And a lot of developments happening today. As a matter of fact, Auburn police say investigators received information about the possible location of a body during their ongoing investigation into Blanch’s disappearance. This is the area where the remains were discovered Monday morning, a rural area several feet into the woodline.

 The Lee County District Attorney says there is good reason to believe the remains are Blanchards. Two suspects have been charged with kidnapping her. Well, today there is new information, but not what anyone wanted to hear. Yazid and Fischer are being held now in the Lee County Jail. They are being held without bond. >> The remains belong to Annayia.

 The medical examiner determined that she had died from a gunshot wound to the head. The condition of her body was so severe that according to Angela, the family was not allowed to see her one last time. Law enforcement explained that it would have been far too painful and traumatic for them.

 While investigators continued processing the scene where the remains were found, Angela spoke at a memorial vigil. First, she thanked everyone who had continued praying, supporting the family, and helping search for Ana Yaya. First, I want to address the parents. Parents, you never think that something like this is going to happen to your child. You prepare them.

 You think you’ve prepared them enough. I thought I did. I talked to Annayia about it every day. Every day on the phone. Hey, Annayia, make sure you’re not, you know, going anywhere by yourself at night. Make sure you’re not doing Yeah, Mom. I know, you know, I’m good. Mama, I got this. Trusted her with all my heart.

 But nothing you do can come can prepare you for some evil that is out [laughter] there, y’all. Please. So, I’m begging parents. Put a just a little bit more. Uh, teach your kids a little bit more. Right now, I feel guilty. maybe nothing I could have done, but I should have prepared her just a little bit better um for things she might have came into contact with the whole community.

 It’s always been good. But now seeing the support that we have for what’s happened to her, this would make she’s smiling right now [laughter] in heaven. I can tell you that right now. She’s not smiling. No. Annia is laughing and she’s laughing at y’all. I can tell you right now she’s laughing at y’all.

 But um this is making her heart smile. was making my heart smile because we all know how special of a girl that Annayia was. She put everybody before her. She wanted everybody to have fun and laugh and it was always it would if y’all were having a good time, she was going to make sure you were having a good time because life was good for her and she was a happy happy happy girl and and that’s just that’s just the bottom line.

 Like >> soon afterward, investigators made another arrest. 63-year-old David Lee Johnson Jr. was charged with obstructing justice. He admitted that he knew his son had helped Ibrahim leave the state after a warrant had already been issued for his arrest. DNA testing showed that the steering wheel contained a mixture of DNA from at least two people, including Ana.

 The same mixed DNA profile was found on a vape cartridge recovered from the cup holder. Investigators also found DNA from at least two individuals on the driver’s seat headrest, but the second male profile was too limited for a complete comparison. The same issue arose with the DNA recovered from the gear shift. It was a disappointing result for investigators, but not an uncommon one in forensic science.

 One detective noted that when the vehicle was recovered, the driver’s door handle had a strong smell of disinfectant that suggested someone had made a deliberate effort to thoroughly clean the vehicle and remove evidence. Even so, prosecutors were confident they had more than enough evidence. In early December, the charges against Ibrahim Yazid were upgraded.

Instead of first-degree kidnapping, he was charged with two counts of capital murder. murder committed during a kidnapping and murder committed during the commission of another felony. Despite the arrests of two other individuals, detectives emphasized that Ibrahim Yazid was the only person who had directly abducted Aniah Blanchard.

He alone is responsible for the murder of Anya. At trial, Ibrahim Yazid pleaded not guilty. The district attorney announced that the prosecution would seek the death penalty without hesitation. Every time I Yazid appeared in court, he smiled, laughed, and deliberately stared people directly in the eyes, seemingly trying to intimidate them.

 On one occasion, he even interrupted the judge, insisting that the prosecution had nothing on him while his attorney unsuccessfully tried to get him to stay quiet. I’m innocent. I’m innocent. You don’t have any real evidence. To say he showed no remorse would barely begin to describe what those in the courtroom witnessed. Before the end of the year, the charges against Antoine Fischer were dropped.

Investigators concluded that his actions did not meet the legal standard for participating in the kidnapping. Based on legal and procedural grounds, his attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the case and the court granted it. However, Antoine Fischer provided investigators with crucial testimony against Ibrahim Yazid.

 He said Ibrahim arrived at his location driving a black Honda. The two of them then drove to the parking lot where Ana’s vehicle was later found. There, Ibrahim left the Honda, got into Antoine’s pickup truck, and they drove to the church in the wooded area. According to Antoine, he watched Ibrahim pull something wrapped in a blanket out of the truck bed.

 Two legs were sticking out. After they returned to the vehicle, Ibrahim told him he had shot the young woman after she had allegedly reached for his gun. As a result of the investigation, law enforcement concluded that Antoine Fiser had not been involved in the kidnapping itself, but had only helped conceal the crime after it had already been committed.

 The charges against David Lee Johnson Jr. were later dropped as well. Pre-trial hearings were scheduled for April 2020, but the start of the CO 19 pandemic and the resulting lockdowns brought the court proceedings almost to a complete standstill. While Ibraham Yazid remained in custody awaiting trial, his violent behavior continued.

 He was charged with another offense after biting a correctional officer at the jail. He was also charged in another unsolved case from 2018, the murder of Steven Hammy. Steven had been shot multiple times in a wooded area. He was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries. In addition, Ibrahim Yazid was charged with the attempted murder of a woman who was shot in the face during the same attack in which Steven was fatally wounded.

Jury selection will continue tomorrow morning in the trial of Ibrahim Yazid. Of the 450 jurors summoned for the case, 105 appeared in court. Some of them will return tomorrow alongside others scheduled to be reviewed. The selection process could take up to a week. Homewood City Hall lit up in blue tonight in honor of Annayia and her family.

 During the trial, Annayia went to Homewood High. The city says this will go on for the next 10 nights as a symbol of remembrance, support, and unity. >> In March 2026, 7 years after it all began, Ibrahim Yazid finally went on trial. He continued to maintain his innocence. The defense argued that no direct evidence, DNA, or fingerprints connected Ibrahim Yazid to the crime.

 His attorneys insisted that the prosecution had failed to prove its case. “All we have are assumptions that he kidnapped her, assumptions that he robbed her, assumptions that he killed her. That’s all you have,” his attorney told the jury. However, the forensic expert testified that the absence of DNA matches on certain items is entirely common in criminal investigations.

 It did not mean Ibrahim Yazid had not been in the vehicle with Ana. The prosecution’s case relied primarily on surveillance footage, witness testimony, and cell phone data. Although investigators initially considered the possibility that Annie had met the mysterious Eric through a dating app, they found no evidence to support that theory.

 Everything pointed to the attack being completely random. Uh, investigators believed Ibrahim Yazid spotted Ania alone at the gas station and chose her as his victim right there. Prosecutors also suggested that he may have been the one sending messages from Ania’s phone in an attempt to mislead everyone searching for her. Uh, before the trial began, prosecutors also adjusted the way they presented the kidnapping charge.

 Uh, an eyewitness at the gas station said he saw Anna Yaya being forced into her vehicle. However, there was a brief gap in the surveillance footage. The video showed uh Ibrahim Yazid leaving the store and then getting into the front passenger seat of Anaya’s vehicle. But because the recording was missing during that brief interval, prosecutors could not say with certainty what was said or what happened at the moment he got into the SUV.

 For that reason, they chose not to base the kidnapping charge solely on the claim that she had been forced into the vehicle. Otherwise, the defense could argue that Anna had allowed him into the SUV voluntarily and that no kidnapping had occurred. Instead, prosecutors emphasized that even if the initial encounter had been voluntary, the large amount of blood found on the front passenger seat, along with the shell casing and evidence of a gunshot through the passenger side door proved beyond question that at some point Anya was

fighting for her life. According to the prosecution, a violent struggle took place after Anya found herself trapped in a situation she could no longer escape against her will. Framing the case that way allowed prosecutors to preserve the kidnapping charge even if the defense challenged the circumstances surrounding her initial contact with Ibrahim Yazid.

 Prosecutors also argued that in the final moments of her life, Annayia likely tried to grab Ibrahim Yazid’s gun to defend herself. According to the prosecution, that was when he fatally shot her. That theory matched what Antoine Fischer testified. that Ibrahim Yazid had told him after the crime. >> The capital murder trial for Ibrahim Yazid entering the final stages as the state and defense rest their cases in Lee County late today.

>> Jason, today we heard from a forensic anthropologist and from the chief medical examiner in Alabama. They were both on site in Mon County where Annayia Blanchard’s remains were discovered. Now those remains were very scattered and they worked together to evaluate 1,700 square meters of woods.

 The forensic anthropologist alongside her team worked to recover several different bones including skull fragments, vertebrae, ribs, soft tissue, and teeth. While on the stand, she said based on the bone fusion, bone length, and shape, and size of the skull, she was able to determine the remains belong to an African-American woman in her late teens, saying they were consistent to Annayia Blanchard.

>> The prosecution called more than 40 witnesses to testify. The defense, on the other hand, rested its case without calling a single witness. And just 6 days after the trial began, it was over. Yesterday, while the jury was deliberating, Ibrahim Yazid was facing conviction on two counts of capital murder.

 But today, the jury returned verdicts on lesser charges. The jury did not find Ibrahim Yazid guilty of capital murder. Instead, they convicted him on lesser offenses. The first conviction was for felony murder in connection with Ania’s kidnapping. The second was for intentional murder committed during a robbery based on the fact that he took possession of her vehicle and her cell phone after the crime.

 As a result of that verdict, Ibrahim Yazid could no longer be sentenced to death or to life in prison without the possibility of parole. >> Well, breaking news in a case we’ve been following for years. Ibrahim Yazid was just sentenced for the murder of Homewood native Annayiah Blanchard. >> In May 2026, Ibrahim Yazid was sentenced to life in prison.

 The court imposed two life sentences which he will serve concurrently. That was the harshest sentence the court could legally impose. Technically, his sentence allows for the possibility of parole, but when he will become eligible to apply depends on the specific structure of his sentence. Even then, being eligible to seek parole does not mean it will be granted, especially given his exceptionally violent criminal history.

 The district attorney said, “Today, justice prevailed. I am satisfied that the court imposed the maximum possible sentence for the senseless and brutal murder of Anniah Blanchard life imprisonment.” That is exactly the sentence this crime deserved, and it is the outcome Anna’s family has been waiting for over many years.

 He also emphasized that the case had deeply shaken the entire community. This crime shook our community to its core. [music] I want the response to this horrific crime to serve as a warning to anyone who believes they can come into Lee County and commit violent crimes here. Those individuals will be brought to justice and they will face the harshest possible consequences.

Angela said, “My daughter fought an incredibly violent criminal. She fought until the very end. Because of her, he will never be able to hurt another person again. And that gives me some measure of peace. Anyah’s father, Elijah Senior, also addressed those in attendance. Now, my daughter’s name speaks for itself.

 It was her name that helped secure this conviction, and I am truly grateful for what happened today. Whatever comes next, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars. He admitted that it was very important for him to look Ibrahim Yazid directly in the eyes. I wanted him to understand that he did not win. This man is extremely dangerous. He’s a coward.

 He’s ruthless. He has absolutely no conscience and everything in his past proves it. Ananas’s case also raised deeply important questions about the justice system. At the time of the murder, Ibrahim Yazid had been free on bond, even though he was already facing charges of kidnapping, attempted murder, and robbery, extremely serious, violent offenses.

 After the verdict, the public demanded answers. How had someone with such an extensive criminal history and such serious pending charges been allowed back onto the streets? and why had the system allowed him to slip through its gaps ultimately leading to this tragedy. >> It blows my mind how a person like that is still able to walk around and be amongst people and um yeah, you know, there a lot of things we need to answer.

>> Those questions ultimately led to the passage of an law by the Alabama legislature in November 2022. The measure received overwhelming support from voters and was approved as an amendment to the Alabama Constitution. Uh before that, Alabama’s Constitution guaranteed the right to bail for nearly every defendant except those charged with capital murder.

 Because Ibrahim Yazid’s earlier charges did not fall into that category, judges were legally required to allow him the opportunity to be released on bond. Annayia’s law significantly expanded the list of offenses for which a judge can deny bail altogether. 12 additional violent felonies were added, including intentional murder, attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping, rape, robbery, domestic violence, and aggravated child abuse.

 For many people across the state, it was a major victory. Mayor Jimmy Gardner put it simply, “People who commit violent crimes should not be given the opportunity to commit them again.” He added, “I believe everyone should have the right to ask for release on bond. But when someone has already committed a serious violent crime and continues to pose a threat to the public if released, there is no reason to give that person another chance.

 They’ve already proven they cannot live within the rules of society.” Jimmy Gardner also shared that Anaya’s family established the nonprofit organization Ana’s Heart, which teaches young people about personal safety. Its mission is to keep Anya’s memory alive through education, support for young people, and community outreach.

 A scholarship was also created in Ania’s honor, and a memorial bench was placed in one of her favorite parks. This case became a chilling reminder of how quickly a life can be taken away. Nia Blanchard was doing exactly what millions of people do every day, stopping at a well-lit gas station to buy a drink. She could never have imagined that a single gap in the law would ultimately cost her her life.

After losing his sister, Elijah Jr. largely withdrew from the world around him. He now cares for her dog, Blue, and tries to find comfort in simple everyday routines, if only to distract himself from the pain for a little while. Her younger brother fell asleep every night clutching her photograph tightly.

 Her younger sister, who was only 6 years old at the time, constantly asked where Ana Yaya was. It was incredibly difficult for her to understand that her sister would never come home again. One day, Walt was even called to her school because the little girl couldn’t stop crying over how much she missed Anya. Angela said, “Ani was born on my birthday, June 22nd.

 That was supposed to be something special, something only the two of us would always share. Now even the simplest moments in life are filled with pain because Aniah should be here with us and her brothers and sisters have to spend the rest of their lives without her.
