I caught my husband cheating with his mistress right in our own master bedroom; consumed by rage, i secretly wired the bed frame to a 120-volt wall socket, and as they got into bed, i turned on the power, but then the unthinkable happened…
“Yes. And the woman walking up to him is his girlfriend, Madison. She’s also his business partner.”
Harper’s entire body began to tremble as the woman approached her husband. Madison wore a skirt so short that she looked like a nightclub stripper. Without hesitation, she climbed onto Logan’s lap and kissed him passionately on the lips.
Harper cleared her throat loudly. “Girlfriend? How did that happen? He told me she was his supervisor.”
Caleb stared at her, utterly perplexed. “That’s his girlfriend. They’re actually engaged and getting married soon. Wait—don’t tell me you’re one of Logan’s side pieces.”
“Side pieces? Who’s the other one? Do you seriously not know that the man you call boss is married?” Harper asked in disbelief.
“Hey, don’t say that, especially not about him. You don’t know what kind of man you’re trash-talking, and you have no idea how dangerous your life became the second you climbed that fence and entered our hideout.”
A strange chill ran down Harper’s spine at Caleb’s warning. She looked around the compound, and goose bumps erupted across her skin as she finally realized how suspicious the place was. It was a massive abandoned construction site crawling with armed men.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Besides, how is this dangerous if it’s just a freight parking lot for factory loaders?”
“A freight lot? Really? You don’t know anything about us, miss? Who exactly is your husband here? Tell me, so I can tell him to send you home and make sure you never come back.” Annoyance bled into Caleb’s tone.
Harper bit her lip, her expression souring. “I’m Logan’s wife. The man you call your boss.”
“His wife? Wait—are you Harper?”
Harper nodded. “Yes. Did Logan mention me to you?”
“Oh. Aren’t you going to confront Madison?”
“No,” Harper lied smoothly.
She knew she had to be careful with her words, especially in front of her husband’s right-hand man. He would undoubtedly side with Logan, considering he was actively enabling his infidelity.
“You’re quite the martyr, then. Or maybe you have a plan. You could always cut me in on it,” Caleb teased.
Harper shook her head and walked away, ignoring Caleb’s faint calls behind her. What she had seen was enough to form a plan. This was no ordinary logistics job. If she acted impulsively, she might end up dead before she ever got her revenge.
The next morning, Harper woke to find Logan waiting outside their bedroom.
“Good, you’re awake,” her husband said coldly.
Harper merely shot him a look and walked straight to the kitchen.
“Don’t you have work today? It’s seven in the morning. You might be late,” she said casually.
“Not yet. We need to talk.”
“About what?”
“Madison is throwing a party for her employees, and we’re invited. Everyone is allowed a plus-one, so I figured I’d ask whether you’re free this afternoon.”
Harper forced a smile. “Really? Your boss is so sweet, making time to throw a party for her workers.”
Logan smiled brightly and took both of Harper’s hands. “Tell me about it. So, are you coming? I’m sure you’ll love it there, babe.”
Suppressing her disgust, Harper offered a hesitant smile and nodded. Going to the party fit perfectly into her plan. It would give her a chance to mingle with Logan’s coworkers—especially his mistress, Madison.
“Don’t bother picking me up, Logan. Just text me the address of the venue.”
Like Logan, Harper went to work that morning. She was a registered nurse at a small suburban clinic near their apartment. As soon as she arrived, an elderly patient greeted her enthusiastically.
“Oh, it’s so good you’re here, Nurse Harper.”
“Good morning, Mrs. Higgins. You look awfully happy to see me.” Harper smiled at the sweet old woman she regularly cared for.
“Well, of course. You’re my favorite nurse here. The others aren’t my type. Too grumpy.”
“Is that so? My colleagues are really nice, Mrs. Higgins. You should try talking to them.”
“No need. Come on, Nurse Harper. Your timing is perfect. My grandson is here, and I’ll introduce you to him. Who knows? Maybe the two of you will hit it off, and my grandson won’t be a loner anymore.”
Harper chuckled at the woman’s rambling and gently helped her toward her room. She froze, however, when she saw a very familiar man standing inside—her high school ex-boyfriend.
“Oh, Grandson, what are you staring at? Help me out over here. Don’t be shy around Nurse Harper,” Mrs. Higgins scolded.
Harper watched the man scramble over to help his grandmother, but she remained rooted to the spot, paralyzed. Seeing her ex-boyfriend after ten years felt like a bizarre case of déjà vu. The moment he spoke, chills ran through her.
“Sorry, Grandma. You were right. The nurse taking care of you is beautiful,” Caleb said with a charming smile.
The old woman laughed heartily and swatted Caleb on the shoulder. “See? I told you. What do you think, Nurse Harper? Does my grandson meet your standards? Because if he does, I’ll start planning the wedding.”
“Oh, my goodness, Mrs. Higgins. I’m already married,” Harper replied, scratching her head awkwardly.
Caleb secretly observed her as she mentioned her marriage, while the old woman looked visibly disappointed.
“What a shame. How many years have you been married? Maybe there’s still time for a divorce,” Mrs. Higgins joked.
Harper laughed, though her eyes turned serious. “We’ve been married for two years.”
“Do you have children?”
“Not yet.”
“Why? Is your husband firing blanks?”
Caleb could not suppress a smirk, making Harper feel even more awkward.
“No, Mrs. Higgins. I don’t think so. We just didn’t plan on having children before. And now, it looks like I have absolutely no intention of ever having a child with him,” Harper said meaningfully.
“Why is that? Is your husband messing around? If he is, dump him. You can replace him with my grandson. He’s a great catch,” the old woman declared, pointing at Caleb.
Caleb scratched his eyebrow and shook his head. Then he stepped closer to Harper and grabbed her wrist, startling her.
“What? Do you need something?” Harper asked.
“Actually, besides visiting my grandmother, I need a checkup. Can you walk me to the examination room, Nurse Harper?”
“Sure. I’ll leave you for a little while, Mrs. Higgins. I’m just going to assist your grandson.”
She allowed Caleb to lead her down the hall, but stopped when she realized they were walking in the wrong direction.
“This isn’t the way.”
“I know, but we need to talk, Harper.”
“About what, Caleb? I have a shift this morning and somewhere to be this afternoon, so could you just get to the point?”
“Come on. It’s been ten years. I didn’t recognize you right away last night because you look so much more mature.”
“Okay. And?”
“It’s true.”
“Wait. Is there more?”
“Last night, at the abandoned construction site—”
The hairs on Harper’s arms stood on end as she looked the man up and down. She matched the voice of the Caleb from the dark compound to the Caleb now standing in front of her. Realization struck, and she took a step back.
“That was you. What do you want from me? Did Logan send you?”
“No. But Madison put out a bounty to find out who you were after you left the site. She knows you discovered her affair with Logan.”
“So, should I be scared?”
“Yes.”
Caleb’s loud, blunt answer made Harper’s heart hammer inside her chest. There was a dark warning in his tone—a sign that crossing her husband’s mistress could prove to be a fatal mistake.
“Why should I be scared? I’m the victim of their betrayal, Caleb. Why should I cower when I can turn the tables on them?”
Despite her nerves, Harper refused to back down. Caleb smirked and nodded.
“I like your confidence. So, what’s your plan?”
“None of your business, Caleb.”
“You can still trust me, you know.”
“You’re Logan’s right-hand man, remember? And you defended that Madison woman last night as if you worshipped her. Admit it. You have the hots for that home-wrecker, don’t you?”
Caleb cringed and shook his head vehemently. “No way. I just didn’t want you exposing her at the company. She’s my cousin, anyway.”
Embarrassed, Harper looked away. “Then how can I trust you?”
“I don’t know. Why are you asking me? You’re still as sassy as ever. Let me prove my loyalty to you, Your Highness,” Caleb teased playfully.
Harper crossed her arms. “Go ahead, Mr. Right Hand. By the way, your title is unbelievably cheesy. Anyway, what’s the deal?”
“Later, at the party, they’re going to spike your drink. But it isn’t just a sedative. Madison’s men are mixing in a powerful hallucinogen and a laxative.”
“Why would she do that?”
“Pride. It’s the only way Logan can divorce you without giving you a single dime. Actually, the two of them planned it together. They’re going to make you appear clinically insane and repulsive in front of everyone. Logan will play the victim to justify leaving you, making sure you lose everything in the settlement. The divorce papers are already drawn up.”
Caleb reached into his pocket. “If you believe me, here’s a neutralizer pill. Take it before you go to the party. I’ll handle the rest.”
“And what if I don’t believe you? You’re one of their men. I’m sure you’d have no problem playing me.”
“Suit yourself. Don’t take it if you want to become a laughingstock and be preyed upon by the three junkies Madison hired to take advantage of you while you’re out of your mind. I picked them myself.”
Caleb gave her a dark grin before walking away, leaving Harper visibly furious.
“That jerk. He hasn’t changed a bit. He’s still a massive troll,” Harper muttered into the empty hallway.
Yet as she looked at the pill in her hand, Caleb’s words echoed in her mind, and she could not ignore the sharp sting of heartbreak. She could not fathom that her own husband would destroy her reputation simply to get what he wanted.
“Did I marry the wrong man?” Harper whispered tearfully. “I guess I did.”
When afternoon came, Harper got ready for the party and swallowed the pill Caleb had given her. The moment she arrived at the venue, she spotted Logan approaching with an enormous, artificial smile.
“You look beautiful tonight, babe.”
Harper forced a smile, fighting the urge to vomit at the sheer hypocrisy of the man.
As they entered the venue, she caught Caleb’s eye. He was already smirking at her while speaking to someone. She also saw Madison approaching with a broad grin.
“Hey, is this your wife, Logan?” Madison asked, pointing toward Harper.
“Yes, ma’am. This is Harper.” Logan turned toward his wife. “Harper, this is my boss.”
“Wow. You have a beautiful wife, Logan.”
“Thanks. I’ve known I was beautiful for a long time,” Harper replied with a sickeningly sweet smile.
She caught Madison’s subtle grimace but ignored it as Logan led her to their table. Unsurprisingly, Madison sat with them, along with Caleb, who had reached the table first.
“Oh, you’re here, Caleb. Harper, this is Caleb, Madison’s cousin,” Logan introduced.
Harper nodded and smiled as Caleb extended his hand. She took it reluctantly.
“It’s nice to meet you, Harper. I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“Thanks. I’m sure you’ve heard only wonderful things, because, well, I’m wonderful.”
Logan let out a fake laugh while looking at Harper, whose expression remained completely deadpan. She calmly surveyed the room.
“May I steal your beautiful wife for a dance, Logan?” Caleb asked.
Harper could practically feel Logan’s internal objection, but he could hardly refuse a request from his boss’s cousin. Smirking, she took Caleb’s hand.
“Sure. It would be an honor to dance with you.” She winked at Logan, who nodded rigidly.
As they swayed across the dance floor, Caleb leaned closer. “I thought you were going to reject my offer yourself, Harper.”
“I was going to, but I need to ask you something.”
“Sure. What is it?”
“How do I know which food or drink contains the drug?”
Caleb smiled. “So, now you trust me.”
Harper looked away and muttered, “I just want to be certain.”
“Did you take the pill I gave you?”
“Yes, but I don’t know when I’m supposed to act.”
“Wow. It looks like we had exactly the same plan. I was going to tell you to pretend you were dizzy, but I suppose that would be predictable. Logan had the drug put into your favorite dessert. You do know what your favorite dessert is, right?”
“Obviously. Do I look like an idiot who doesn’t know her own favorite cake?”
“Calm down. You’re getting angry again. I’m only telling you that it’s the artisanal cookies-and-cream cake,” Caleb said with a chuckle.
“All right. Walk me back to my seat. I don’t want to dance with you anymore.”
“And, by the way, why are you calling that cheating scumbag Logan now? No more ‘boss’?”
“Because you’re my boss now,” Caleb teased, winking as he escorted her back toward the table, where Logan and Madison were chatting happily.
“Oh, you’re finished. Perfect timing. Eat up, babe,” Logan said. “After dinner, Madison baked a special dessert just for you. I mentioned that you love cake, especially cookies and cream.”
“Really? But I usually eat only my own recipes,” Harper said smoothly.
“Babe, come on. Madison baked it herself. Show some respect,” Logan whispered, squeezing her hand.
Harper yanked her hand away and offered a fake smile. “But I love trying new things. It will be my pleasure to taste your baking, Madison.”
“Thank you, Harper. You’re so kind.”
Harper merely nodded and began eating her dinner. When dessert arrived, a slice of cake was placed in front of her. She sneered inwardly at its sloppy texture.
“Mm. It looks good,” Harper said, glancing at Caleb, who had one eyebrow raised.
“Try it, babe. I’m sure you’ll love it,” Logan insisted, offering to slice off a piece for her.
Harper stopped him and subtly rolled her eyes.
“Thanks.”
“Enjoy, Harper. That’s all for you,” Madison said, pointing toward the cake.
“Do I look like a glutton? I can’t finish all of this. Come on, share it with me,” Harper offered, pushing the plate toward Logan.
Both Logan and Madison quickly declined.
“You know I don’t have a sweet tooth, babe,” Logan said.
“I don’t eat cake either. You can have it all, Harper. Don’t worry about us,” Madison added.
“Oh, really? What a waste of your effort if I’m the only one who appreciates it, right?” Harper looked across the table. “Oh, Caleb can have some. You two are cousins, aren’t you?”
She saw Caleb’s eyes widen. Logan and Madison froze, and even the other people at the table awkwardly looked away.
“But I baked it personally for you, Harper. Are you certain you want to share it?” Madison stammered.
“Of course. Sharing is caring, right? Here.”
Caleb reluctantly opened his mouth as Harper forcefully fed him a forkful of cake. Logan remained silent, secretly smirking at what he imagined would happen to Caleb.
Then, to everyone’s shock, Harper suddenly spat her own bite onto her plate and gagged loudly in front of Madison and Logan.
“What the hell? What’s wrong? Does it taste bad?” Madison asked, her face caught between false concern and suppressed triumph.
Harper retched again and grabbed a glass of water from Caleb to rinse her mouth. Everyone at the table twisted their faces in disgust at her dramatic performance.
“What kind of flavor is this? Is it rotten? Honestly, did you bake this today or last year?”
“It’s fresh. I stayed up late baking that, Harper,” Madison protested.
“Really? What are you talking about? Why would it taste so bad? Maybe your ingredients had expired. Where did you even buy them? And why is the texture so disgusting? Are you sure you baked this?”
“Excuse me? What are you implying? Are you doubting me?” Madison demanded, her voice trembling with indignation.
Logan massaged his temples and shook his head, while Caleb smirked quietly in the corner. They had successfully attracted the attention of the surrounding tables, and people were turning to eavesdrop on the unfolding drama.
“No. I just don’t like the taste. If you ask me, you look like a professional. I know you can afford culinary school and learn to bake properly. You can also afford expensive ingredients. I simply can’t believe this is the cake my husband has been bragging about.”
“Harper, stop. Do you know how expensive and imported the ingredients Madison used are?” Logan explained, barely containing his rage.
Madison’s face had turned beet-red, though she tried desperately to maintain a calm facade. Harper smiled inwardly.
“Really? No offense, Madison. I’m a nurse, but I know a thing or two about quality food,” Harper said, scratching her head innocently.
“It’s okay. I suppose I need more practice before I can meet your standards, Harper. I’m sorry.”
“Are you serious? That wasn’t a joke. You really don’t look like you baked it, but whatever, Madison.”
Harper clutched her chest, acting deeply wounded. Logan panicked and grabbed her shoulders.
“Can you just shut up, Harper? You’re humiliating Madison. Stop it,” Logan hissed under his breath.
Harper maintained her theatrical frown and escalated her performance. “Why, babe? Is it a crime to be honest? Didn’t you tell me never to lie? Besides, I’m your wife. Why are you taking her side? You know I’m a picky eater. I hate it when people insult my palate.”
Logan buried his face in his hands before aggressively pulling Harper toward the exit.
“Enough.”
“You’re hurting my feelings,” Harper complained as he dragged her away.
“Well, you’re making me furious.”
“Why? Did I do something wrong?” Harper asked, widening her innocent eyes.
“Why did you do that? Why did you have to humiliate Madison in front of everyone? God, Harper, don’t you realize she has a reputation to protect? Why did you cause a scene?” Logan shouted, finally losing his temper.
Harper deliberately maintained a sullen expression simply to annoy him further.
“Sorry, okay? Is it bad to be a critic? I was only being honest. What did you want me to do—pretend I liked it and finish the entire thing? I would be the one suffering. I’d go home with a stomachache and terrible diarrhea. You can’t even afford to buy your own underwear. How would you pay my hospital bills?”
“Stop it, Harper. Pull yourself together. We’re going back inside to say goodbye. I can’t stay at this party after the embarrassment you caused.”
“I’m not going back inside,” Harper snapped, though Logan pulled her along anyway.
As she passed Caleb, she saw him acting dizzy and disoriented. A little later, Harper’s phone buzzed with a text from him.
Look at this guy, she thought. He warned me the dessert was drugged, and then he didn’t take the antidote himself. Idiot.
Harper glanced back at Madison.
“We’re heading home, Madison. I apologize for my wife’s behavior,” Logan said.
“It’s fine. Maybe next time, Harper. I’ll make sure you love the next dessert I prepare.”
Harper merely nodded and smiled. She and Logan left the venue and headed home.
A week later, Harper crossed paths with Caleb again at a park near her clinic. She intended to ignore him, but he stepped into her path.
“Hey. How are you, Harper?”
“I’m fine. A little busy, but surviving,” she replied dryly.
Caleb nodded and pointed toward a nearby bench. “Let’s talk for a second. I have something to discuss with you.”
“About what?”
“Getting back at your husband.”
“Wow. You seem angrier than I am.”
Harper followed Caleb and sat on the bench beside him.
“Don’t tell me humiliating your cousin was your only idea of revenge,” he said.
“Why do you care? Even if I have a plan, I’m the only person who needs to know about it, you nosy jerk.”
“You don’t want my help? I know many ways to get revenge, Harper.”
“I’ve already devised a plan. A brutal one,” Harper said with a dark grin.
“Interesting. Care to share it?”
Harper sighed deeply before explaining her plan to Caleb.
“Wow. That is brutal. Won’t they die? You could go to prison, Harper.”
“That’s fine. At least I’ll have killed them, right? My beautiful hands won’t get dirty. I’ll kill them the intelligent way,” Harper said cheerfully.
Caleb shook his head in disbelief. “What a bold woman.”
When Harper returned home, she found Logan relaxing in the living room. She approached him and kissed his cheek.
“Are you still angry with me, Logan?” she asked sweetly.
“No. Fortunately, Madison is forgiving. She said she understands. But don’t ever do that again.”
“Okay. I promise. To make it up to your boss, I decided to invite her over tomorrow.”
“Invite her? Why? What’s the occasion?” Logan asked, confused.
Harper smiled. “I’m going to cook her favorite meal as a peace offering. So, babe, help me. Please convince Madison to come over. I simply want to apologize properly.”
Harper nearly gagged at her own falsely sweet performance, but it was her only path to revenge. Logan immediately agreed.
The next day, Harper took time off work to prepare her trap. By dinnertime, she was completely ready to face Madison.
“Good evening, Madison. Please, come inside.”
Madison greeted her with an enormous, victorious smile and confidently entered the house.
“Thank you for inviting me, Harper. I truly didn’t expect this, but thank you.”
“You’re welcome, Madison. I only wanted to make things right and apologize for the way I behaved at your party.”
“Oh, it was nothing. I understand your reasons, so don’t worry about it.”
Harper led Madison into the dining room, where Logan was waiting, and the three of them began eating. Harper felt a rush of adrenaline. She could hardly wait for her plan to unfold.
“Oh, no, babe. I have to go to work tonight,” Harper suddenly announced in the middle of the meal. “Another nurse called out, and the clinic is overwhelmed.”
Logan nodded and scratched his head. “All right. Be safe. I’ll take care of Madison.”
“Oh, don’t trouble yourself, Logan. I’ll simply leave with Harper so I don’t impose,” Madison offered falsely.
“No, Madison. Stay awhile. It’s fine with Logan, isn’t it, babe?”
“Yeah. It’s fine.”
Harper smiled as Madison finally agreed to remain in the house for several hours. The moment Harper stepped through the front door, she crept around to the back of the house to spy through a window.
She nearly vomited when she saw the two of them making out passionately in the living room.
“Disgusting. I didn’t know Logan was such a sleaze. What a cheater,” she muttered.
Harper waited patiently until they finally moved into the master bedroom. Then she quietly slipped back into the house and crept toward the slightly ajar bedroom door, staring at the bed.
Unknown to Madison and Logan, the bed frame was no longer an ordinary metal frame. Harper had stripped electrical wires and connected it directly to the 120-volt wall socket.
She smirked when she heard their muffled voices beneath the blankets. Through the crack in the door, she saw the figures beneath the duvet begin to convulse violently as the current surged through the metal frame.
When they stopped moving, Harper kicked open the door and flipped on the light, ready to gloat. Instead, she stumbled backward in shock.
The bed was completely empty.
“What is the meaning of this?” Harper whispered to herself, her heart pounding.
“Surprise. Looking for us?”
Harper spun around and saw Madison standing in the doorway with Logan and Caleb. Logan wore a menacing smile, and a dark aura seemed to surround him.
“What does this mean, Logan?”
“Calm down, Harper. It looks as though you lost—badly. Did you truly expect to find us in there?”
“Caleb shut off the main breaker before your little trap could even produce a spark,” Madison gloated. “We know everything, Harper.”
“Thanks to your ex,” Logan added.
“What do you mean, Logan?”
“Well, Caleb confessed everything last night. He told us about your little trap, about how you sabotaged our plan to ruin your reputation, and about how you sneaked into the abandoned warehouse to spy on me. What a sweet wife.”
Logan’s smile widened. “Wow, Harper. I didn’t know you had it in you to try to electrocute us. Unfortunately for you, we’re much smarter than you are.”
Harper clenched her fists. Without warning, she lunged at Madison and slapped her hard across the face.
“You shameless woman! You’re the one who should be dead on that bed because you’re a home-wrecker. You were so desperate that you threw yourself at a married man!”
Harper screamed as she rained slaps down on Madison.
“Your husband loves me, Harper!”
“Obviously, because you threw yourself at him. He wouldn’t have looked in your direction if you hadn’t made yourself such an easy target.”
“It isn’t my fault I’m prettier and richer than you. Look at you. You don’t even have children, and you already look washed-up.”
Harper seized Madison by the hair and dragged her toward Logan. He reached out to stop her, but Harper slapped him as well, then shoved Madison into him so forcefully that they both tumbled to the floor.
Trembling with rage, Harper turned toward Caleb, who stood beside the door.
“Harper,” Caleb began, raising his hands.
Harper slapped him as hard as she could. The crack echoed through the room.
“Traitor! That’s why you kept forcing your way into my life and making me trust you—so it would be easier to sabotage me. You’re a monster. You knew I was the victim here, Caleb. I know I hurt you in the past, but you could have put that aside. I’m the victim, yet you sided with them. What kind of man are you?”
“Harper, listen to me.”
“Shut up! Don’t you ever say my name again, Caleb, and don’t ever show your face to me. As for you two, get the hell out of my house!”
Harper screamed at the top of her lungs until her throat strained. Logan stepped toward her and tried to seize her arm, but she slapped his hand away.
“Don’t touch me, Logan. You disgust me. I thought I knew you, but I suppose I didn’t. I don’t even know whether you’re really a warehouse worker or the leader of some gang. Tell me, Logan. What did I ever do to deserve this?”
“Nothing. You’re simply part of our game, Harper.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’ll answer, since he clearly can’t,” Madison interrupted. “First of all, Logan married you only to conceal his identity from the public. Having a normal, oblivious wife provided excellent cover, so rival factions wouldn’t suspect him.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Your family was involved with the cartel, Harper.”
Harper blinked twice, looking back and forth between Madison and Logan. She desperately hoped they would take the claim back, but their expressions remained deadly serious, and her heart sank.
“A cartel? Where did you get that false information, Madison? I don’t have parents because they died in a federal raid years ago.”
“But you still carry the enemy’s blood, so don’t ever hope Caleb will side with you. Caleb is loyal to us—to the syndicate.”
“Why did I have to be dragged into your mess? I know nothing about my parents’ supposed crimes. For all I know, your parents were the cartel bosses, and you’re simply running it now.”
“What are you rambling about, Harper? Can you stop pretending you know everything? We have no idea what you’re talking about, and don’t try to reverse the situation. Do you realize we can press charges against you for attempted murder?” Madison threatened.
“Wow. You have the nerve to sue me. Did you forget that I’m the victim here?”
“The victim of what?”
“Your betrayal. And do you know I can turn any charge you file against you? It would be easy to claim I was the victim of a setup,” Harper spat.
She was taken aback when Madison burst into laughter. Logan could not restrain his own laughter either, which only intensified Harper’s fury.
“You’re hilarious, Harper. Seriously, do you think anyone would believe you?” Madison asked.
“Let her go, Logan. She knows nothing.”
“You think you know everything? I may know nothing now, but I can learn. Want to bet?” Harper challenged.
Madison raised an eyebrow and looked at Logan, who merely shrugged.
“What kind of bet?”
“Enough, Harper,” Logan said. “Leave Madison alone. We won’t file charges against you. All we need is for you to remain silent. If you want a divorce, we’ll give it to you, as long as you never bother Madison or me again.”
This time, Harper was the one who laughed maniacally. Unable to control herself, she delivered another stinging slap across Logan’s face.
Logan clutched his mouth as blood trickled from his split lip.
“Oh, my God, you’re bleeding, Logan! Why did you do that to him? He was being generous, and this is how you repay him?” Madison shouted.
Harper turned toward her, her eyes wide and wild. She smiled like a complete psychopath, and without a second thought, she kicked Madison squarely in the stomach.
Madison groaned in pain and collapsed to the floor. Logan glared fiercely at Harper and lunged toward her, but Harper swiftly kicked him in the shin, sending him crashing down beside Madison.
“What I hate most is when people provoke my anger issues. Generous? Which part was generous? The part where you decided not to sue me? You have some nerve. Sue me. I don’t care. I’ll fight you in whatever court we end up in. Besides, why are you the one offering me a divorce? I’m the one who will file. Don’t play the victim, Logan.”
“Especially you, you home-wrecking—”
“What?” Madison snapped. “I’m the woman Logan loves. Between the two of us, Logan loves me more, Harper.”
“So what? Does that change the fact that we’re legally married?”
“Stop it,” Logan said.
“Fine. You file for divorce. Just leave us alone,” he pleaded.
“No. Do I look like a pushover who is going to let you live happily ever after? Since the two of you are the reason my life is miserable, I’m dragging you down with me. There will be no divorce. You’re going to suffer for the rest of your lives. As long as I’m unhappy, neither of you will be happy.”
Harper’s voice echoed throughout the house.
“You’re crazy, Harper,” Madison said.
Harper laughed and stomped hard on Madison’s hand. Madison shrieked, but Logan could only watch in horror because Harper was now pointing a loaded handgun directly at him.
She had stolen it from Caleb’s holster when she slapped him earlier.
Harper chuckled darkly and cocked the gun. “Maybe I am crazy, Madison, and it’s your fault. The only way my insanity will go away is if I kill one of you.”
“No, please, Harper. Spare us,” Logan begged, shaking uncontrollably.
“Spare you? Why should I do that, Logan? I’m a player in this little game of yours. Can’t I enjoy playing? I don’t know how to shoot, but I can practice on the two of you tonight.”
“Please don’t. Harper, have mercy. Please, babe, forgive me. I’ll do whatever you want. If you want, I’ll leave Madison right now, and we can start over. We’ll move out of the country, far away from them. Please, just don’t kill us.”
“Wow. How touching. Logan, you’re prepared to sacrifice your own mistress to save your skin?” Harper scoffed.
Just as Harper’s finger tightened on the trigger, a heavy object struck the back of her head. Her vision blurred, and everything faded into darkness.
Logan stood and wiped his bleeding lip with a victorious smirk as Harper’s unconscious body collapsed into Caleb’s arms.
“I thought you were going to let that lunatic kill us, Caleb,” Logan panted.
“Right. I thought you still loved your ex and were simply going to leave us to die,” Madison agreed, clutching her stomach.
“I wouldn’t let that happen. For now, I’ll take Harper somewhere far away, so she can’t interfere with our plans, boss,” Caleb said coolly.
Logan smirked and nodded. “Good. We can’t let anything jeopardize my transaction with the cartel on Tuesday. It’s a massive payout for the product we’re moving. Make sure she can’t go to the police about what we did.”
“What are we going to do with her?” Madison asked. “She’s brutal, man. You’d better be careful, Caleb. That crazy woman hits hard.”
Caleb merely nodded.
“We could face federal charges because of her,” Madison continued. “And if that happens, my front company will be dragged down too. If the federal agents inspect my factory, they’ll discover that we’re selling far more than pastries.”
“True. Can you kill her, Caleb, or do you want me to do it right here in front of you?” Madison challenged, knowing Caleb usually avoided messy executions.
“Not here. You two leave. I’ll take care of it.”
“Where are you taking her?”
“The desert,” Caleb replied in a deadpan voice as he effortlessly lifted Harper’s unconscious body over his shoulder.
Logan and Madison said their goodbyes and left, absolutely thrilled.
“Finally, your cousin is useful for something,” Logan said. “Madison, I told you he didn’t love Harper anymore. Who wouldn’t choose you over her? I definitely didn’t make a mistake by teaming up with you. You’re so intelligent.”
Then he kissed Madison passionately.
The next day, Harper woke with a pounding headache. She touched the back of her skull and winced as her fingers brushed a large bump, which only made her angrier.
“Damn it. Who the hell hit me in the head? They swing like a baseball player. Now I have a concussion,” she groaned.
She jumped when the bedroom door opened and Caleb walked inside wearing nothing but board shorts.
“You’re awake. Breakfast is ready,” Caleb said casually.
“What are you doing here? How did you get into my house?”
“Your house? You mean my house, Harper?”
Harper immediately surveyed the room. Her cheeks burned with embarrassment when she realized she was not in her own bedroom.
“What am I doing here? Don’t tell me this is part of your plan. Did you kidnap me? Were you the one who hit me in the head?”
“I didn’t kidnap you. I saved you.”
“By giving me a concussion? What is wrong with you? Let me hit you with a crowbar and see how you feel.”
“Calm down. I did that to prevent you from making an enormous mistake. If you had killed them, you wouldn’t have been satisfied with your revenge, because I guarantee you would have been sitting in a jail cell the next morning.”
“No, I wouldn’t.”
“You’re hilarious. Do you think I’m an idiot?”
“As long as they were dead, I would have been fine. I would have gone with the police smiling.”
“What? Are you insane?”
“This is partly your cousin’s fault. She’s a home-wrecker. No—it’s all your fault. Now, can you let me go so I can finish them off?”
Caleb blocked her path as she attempted to storm out of the room, gently pushing her back onto the bed.
“Look, think whatever you like, but murder is not the solution. There is a proper way to get revenge, Harper. Let the law punish them. I’ll help you make it happen.”
“Wow. Those are impressive words—‘I’ll help.’ Did you forget that you’re the reason my plan failed in the first place, Caleb? Don’t offer me your help, because I don’t believe a word you say.”
“I’m serious, Harper. I intentionally sabotaged your plan because I have a better one, and it is guaranteed to work. If you kill them quickly, they won’t feel a fraction of the pain you felt when they betrayed you. But if you destroy them the way I know how—so they can never recover—that will be the best revenge. They’ll suffer infinitely more while rotting in federal prison than you ever did.”
Harper paused and absorbed his words. At last, she understood the angle Caleb was pursuing.
“I understand your point, but I’m still not convinced we’re on the same side. You already betrayed me.”
“I explained everything, didn’t I? I’m on your side, Harper.”
“How are you going to prove that?”
Caleb dropped a brown envelope and an identification badge onto her lap. Harper frowned as she picked them up. Her jaw fell open when she removed the contents of the envelope and read the credentials printed on the badge.
“You’re a DEA agent?” Harper asked, utterly stunned.
Caleb smiled and nodded. “Yes, Harper. I’m working undercover, and one of our primary targets is Logan’s cartel ring. And, by the way, the garbage Logan told you about your parents being involved in a cartel is completely false.”
“Wait—what?” Harper blinked in confusion.
“Your parents were innocent. I hacked into their database and planted those false cartel records so Logan would believe you were connected to the criminal underworld. It was the only way to ensure he wouldn’t simply kill you when he got bored. I’ve been protecting you this entire time.”
“Oh, wow,” Harper whispered, absorbing the weight of his words. “Is all of this evidence against Madison and Logan?”
“As you can see, Logan was planted by a syndicate.”
“Then why haven’t you arrested them, considering all this evidence?”
“We’re missing one final piece. Tomorrow, you’ll see exactly what that is, because I’m bringing you with me when we take them down.”
Joy flooded Harper’s chest.
“Thank you. But I’m still angry with you. You hit my head so hard, Caleb. What if I have internal bleeding or develop a brain tumor?”
“I’m sorry. I couldn’t think of any other way to stop you from shooting them. It was the best option.”
“The best option, my foot. You nearly killed me, and then you stand there saying it was the best option. You’re useless.”
Caleb laughed at Harper’s feisty attitude and gestured for her to follow him to breakfast.
Harper gasped when she stepped into the living room. The massive windows offered a breathtaking view of the ocean.
“Where are we, Caleb?”
“We’re at my house.”
Harper spun around when she heard a woman answering. Her face lit up the moment she recognized her.
“Abigail? What are you doing here?”
“This is my house, remember?”
Harper scratched her head. Abigail had been Harper’s best friend in high school. They had lost contact after going to college because Abigail moved out of state to attend school.
“Wow. How have you been? You’ve changed so much.”
“I’m fine. I’m just stressed because of this damned job.”
“Wait. Don’t tell me you work with Caleb.”
“Unfortunately. I have no idea why I got stuck working with him, and the worst part is that we’re partners.”
“Oh, wow. Why? Is he a bad coworker? Does he treat you poorly?”
“He’s acceptable, but he behaves as though he’s my boss.”
“Well, isn’t he?” Harper asked, confused.
“Yeah, he outranks me—even when it’s just the two of us at home,” Abigail suddenly shouted. “Hey, Caleb, get your ass out here! Why are your boxers hanging over the shower rod again, you pig?”
Harper lowered her head and tried to suppress a laugh when she saw Caleb’s face turn bright red.
“Why do you have to shout? I don’t yell to the heavens about the mess you leave in the bathroom.”
“What mess?”
“Your bloody tampons in the trash, that’s what.”
Harper could no longer restrain herself and burst into laughter.
“You two haven’t changed at all. You still bicker like an old married couple.”
“Ew. Disgusting. Don’t group me with him, Harper,” Abigail shrieked, making a gagging face.
“Yeah. I’d rather live beneath a bridge than be married to her,” Caleb fired back, rolling his eyes.
“Don’t listen to him, Harper. Obviously, I’m the better-looking sibling,” Abigail bragged.
Harper massaged her temples while laughing at their endless sibling rivalry.
“All right, that’s enough,” Caleb interrupted. “Let’s eat breakfast. We need to review the final operational plan for tomorrow’s raid on Logan’s warehouse.”
Harper and Abigail agreed. After breakfast, they sat together to discuss the takedown of Harper’s husband and his mistress.
“Are you sure this is going to succeed?” Harper asked.
“I’m positive, Harper. Our tactical teams are ready and fully equipped, so don’t worry about anything,” Caleb replied confidently, squeezing her hand.
Abigail dramatically cleared her throat, making Harper suddenly hyperaware of Caleb’s touch.
Later that afternoon, Harper walked along the beach with Abigail.
“I had no idea you were going through all of that with Logan,” Abigail said. “Harper, I’m so sorry I wasn’t there when you needed a friend.”
“It’s okay, Abigail. At least Caleb appeared to confuse the hell out of me,” Harper joked.
“Confuse you about your feelings?”
“What?”
“Honestly, Harper, Caleb never got over you. He literally hasn’t had a girlfriend since the two of you broke up.”
“Why couldn’t he simply forget me? I already hurt him, Abigail.”
“I suppose that’s what happens when a man genuinely loves you. Even if you break his heart, his feelings don’t change. He’ll allow you to be happy, even if it’s with someone else. That’s true love, Harper.”
“Yeah, but I was blinded by someone else, so I didn’t see the real love that was directly in front of me. Still, I don’t blame myself entirely. It was partly your brother’s fault. He didn’t fight for me.”
A wave of regret moved through Harper. When they were younger, Caleb had asked her to move out of state with him while he attended the academy. Harper had refused. She chose to remain behind and end their relationship—not because she didn’t love him, but because she did not want to hold him back from pursuing his dreams.
“I blame myself, Abigail, but I can’t change the past. Especially now that I’m completely broken by what Logan did. I don’t think I can ever love again.”
“I understand, Harper. But when you are ready to love again, could you run toward Caleb this time? Maybe God allowed you to feel this pain to correct your path. Maybe there’s a better man waiting for you—and a better, safer life after the pain you’re feeling now. Harper, don’t lose hope.”
“Okay.”
At that moment, Harper could no longer stop the tears from filling her eyes. She poured all her pent-up pain and sorrow onto her friend’s shoulder, allowing exhaustion to wash over her until she finally fell asleep.
Time passed quickly. The next day, Harper sat in the back of an unmarked federal SUV with Caleb and Abigail, ready to witness the arrest of Logan and Madison.
“I am so excited for this operation to be over,” Abigail said. “Finally, I’ll get a long vacation, and I won’t have to look at Caleb’s ugly face.”
Harper smiled softly, her eyes fixed on the tinted window. Moments later, she spotted Logan, Madison, and their heavily armed associates emerging from the warehouse.
Caleb stepped out of the vehicle, followed by Abigail, while Harper remained hidden inside. Shock and panic swept across Logan’s and Madison’s faces as Caleb approached them, flanked by heavily armored DEA tactical agents.
“What is the meaning of this, Caleb? Why did you bring federal agents?” Logan demanded.
“Because you’re under arrest,” Harper answered, stepping out from behind Caleb and Abigail.
“What? Arrested? Why? And how are you here? Harper, weren’t you with Caleb?” Madison shrieked. “Did you betray us, Caleb?”
“When was I ever on your side, Logan?” Caleb asked with deadpan seriousness.
“What do you mean?”
“God, you’re slow. Did you truly fail to notice that enormous portions of your encrypted company files had been corrupted, or that the ledgers connecting you directly to the cartel’s distribution network had disappeared?”
“This guy is brain-dead,” Abigail added.
The color drained from Logan’s face, and Madison collapsed onto the asphalt in absolute terror. Harper smirked as she looked directly into Logan’s eyes.
“Congratulations on your violations of the Federal Controlled Substances Act, babe.”
Logan, Madison, and their entire crew were swiftly handcuffed and thrown into the backs of armored transport vehicles. They were later convicted and received life sentences in federal prison without the possibility of parole, along with millions of dollars in federal fines, for operating an enormous drug-distribution ring concealed behind a legitimate logistics company.
Before Harper officially returned home to pack her belongings, she pulled Caleb aside to thank him.
“Are you going to say goodbye and tell me you never want to see me again, Harper?” Caleb joked.
“Hey, no. I simply want a new environment where I can start over, and I want to thank you. If you hadn’t stopped me from shooting Logan, I would probably be calling a federal penitentiary my new environment right now.”
“So, you’re all right with the fact that I gave you a concussion? Am I forgiven?”
“Oh, come on. Don’t remind me. I’m still angry about that. But truly, thank you. I’ll never forget what you did, Caleb.”
“It was nothing, Harper. I’d do anything for you, anyway. Where are you planning to go now? Seattle?”
Harper smiled warmly. “Seattle.”
After saying her goodbyes, Harper left. Three days later, she moved to Washington State, her heart lighter than it had been in years. The moment she arrived in Seattle, Abigail enveloped her in a tight embrace.
“I truly thought you would back out of moving to Seattle with me, Harper. I would have been furious.”
“I wanted a fresh start too, and I thought we could open a shop here.”
“What kind of shop, Abigail? Are we going into business?”
“Of course. You’re taking a break from nursing. I’ll handle the coffee.”
Harper was thrilled. Over the following months, the two women successfully opened a café and named it Sweet Brew, where they served artisanal desserts and craft coffee.
Even after everything settled down, however, Harper still felt the occasional sting of betrayal whenever she remembered what Logan had done to her. The scars ran deep.
“You’re frowning again, Harper. Don’t tell me you’re still thinking about Logan. Give it a rest. It’s been three months,” Abigail said from across the counter.
“I’m not thinking about him. I’m thinking about the pain they caused. It’s so difficult to forget. Do you think I’ll ever recover, Abigail?”
“Of course you will. Come on. Why are you always so negative?”
“Because it still hurts. I don’t know what to do.”
“Let me heal the wounds in your heart, Harper.”
Harper froze in the middle of wiping a coffee mug and slowly turned toward the voice. Her jaw dropped when she saw Caleb standing in the doorway, looking effortlessly handsome and smiling brightly at her.
“Oh, my God. What a flirt,” Abigail shouted. “Let me tell you something, Caleb. I asked you to come here to help with the shop, not to hit on my friend.”
“You told him to come here? Why? Are we short-staffed?” Harper asked, bewildered.
“He said he was bored at home, so I figured he could help here instead of wasting his time doing nothing.”
“You’re all right with that, aren’t you, Harper?” Caleb interjected smoothly.
Harper offered a hesitant smile. “Of course.”
From that day forward, Harper could not relax whenever Caleb was near. Even when he wasn’t speaking to her, her heart raced for reasons she could not fully explain.
“Wow. You’re becoming very good at making lattes,” Caleb complimented her one morning as she handed an order to a customer.
“This is simply what I do to pass the time when I’m bored.”
“Nice. I wish I could be your hobby, Harper.”
“What? Why?”
“So you would focus all your attention on me.”
“Wow. So, you intend to become my pastime?”
“That’s fine with me. At least I’d have your attention.”
“You seem rather desperate for my attention, Caleb. Seriously, you haven’t changed at all. You’re still unbelievably cheesy.”
Harper laughed. Caleb pouted playfully before laughing with her.
Over the following months, Caleb and Harper became incredibly close. Harper could not deny that she was slowly falling in love with him all over again, but she was not yet ready to rush into a relationship.
“Harper, congratulations. Your divorce from Logan has been finalized. At last, you’re free to flirt,” Caleb teased as he sat at the counter.
Harper struck his shoulder with a towel. “What are you talking about? You’ve been flirting with me since before the divorce was finalized.”
“Oh, so you noticed. Does that mean my flirting is working?”
“A little, but tone it down. It’s too embarrassing.”
“Stop pretending. I bet you’re swooning inside.”
Harper’s eyes widened, and she struck him again. “You are so full of yourself. It’s disgusting.”
“But seriously, can I flirt with you officially?”
“Is that your way of asking me out? You sound like a player.”
“Come on. You’re the only woman I’ve ever loved, Harper. Go ask my mother.”
“Your mother? You’re such a mama’s boy. You can’t even have a serious conversation.”
“Harper, I am serious. I want you to be my wife.”
Harper placed her hands on her hips and faced Caleb, ready to throw a punch, but he leaned back.
“Hold on. A moment ago, you merely wanted to flirt. Now you want me to become your wife? Are you out of your mind? Should I take you to a psychiatric ward so you can be rehabilitated?”
“What if I say I am out of my mind and that I do need rehabilitation, Harper? Would you be willing to be my rehabilitation?”
“What? You’re crazy and incredibly cheesy.”
“But I made you laugh.”
“Okay.”
“Seriously, Harper. May I take you on a real date?”
Harper stopped and bit her lower lip. She could feel Caleb’s absolute sincerity, and she could not stop the smile spreading across her face.
“If you’re ready to accept all my baggage and my past, Caleb, then I’m ready to open the door for you—as long as the price is your unconditional love.”
Caleb’s eyes lit up. He surprised her by pulling her into a tight embrace directly behind the counter.
“Whatever past you have, Harper, I’m ready to love you for the rest of my life. My love for you isn’t based on your past. Besides, I was part of that past, remember? I will love you forever, Harper. I promise.”
From that point forward, Caleb never stopped pursuing Harper. He treated her properly and devoted himself entirely to her. It did not take long for Harper to officially say yes.
Five years later, Harper and Caleb were happily married. They lived in a beautiful house in Seattle with their twin children, enjoying the life they truly deserved.
Remember, trust is not something that should be given away easily. We are most vulnerable to deception when we blindly trust people, especially those closest to us.
Before we officially end our story, I want to leave you with a question. If you were in Harper’s position, would you have sought revenge after being betrayed by the person you loved?
